Alexstrasza’s quest text connects your work directly to the assault: “With Antiok slain and the scythe in our possession, the frost wyrm assaults upon your forces at Angrathar will halt. The wyrms that remain in the Dragonblight will be hunted and destroyed, their bones returning to the earth.”
She tells you the time for the final stand has come. Return to Fordragon Hold and notify Bolvar.
Fly to Fordragon Hold [37, 23] in northwestern Dragonblight. Bolvar is at the top of the hill, same location as the To Fordragon Hold! turn-in. Speak to him.
Bolvar’s completion text is brief but charged: he acknowledges your role in making the assault possible, then announces he will personally lead the charge. “I will now lead the 7th Legion to the front line. The time to end this war is at hand. The Lich King’s tyranny ends today!” He instructs you to take his post and stand guard.
The Wrathgate Cinematic then plays automatically.
The Wrathgate Cinematic
This is WoW’s first fully produced in-game cinematic and remains one of the most celebrated moments in the franchise’s history. It runs roughly four minutes.
The Charge: Bolvar walks among his Alliance troops as they rally. “Highlord Bolvar! Thank the Light!” soldiers cry. He leads a charge against undead Scourge pouring out of the Wrathgate. “Back, you mindless wretches!”
On the Horde side, Dranosh Saurfang (son of High Overlord Varok Saurfang) rallies Horde forces from the Kor’kron Vanguard: “Kor’kron, move out! LOK’TAR OGAR!” The two armies converge on the gate from both flanks.
The Lich King Appears: The Wrathgate opens. Arthas himself emerges. He taunts both factions, challenges them to show their strength. Dranosh Saurfang charges Arthas alone. Arthas kills him instantly with Frostmourne: “You will have your Saurfang. After the Scourge is done with him.”
Bolvar steps forward to face Arthas directly.
The Betrayal: Before the duel can begin, laughter erupts from the cliffs above. Grand Apothecary Putress appears with Forsaken catapults: “Did you think we had forgotten? Did you think we had forgiven? Behold, now, the terrible vengeance of the Forsaken!”
The catapults launch the New Plague onto the battlefield.
“Death to the Scourge! And death to the living!” The green plague kills Alliance, Horde, and Scourge alike indiscriminately. Even Arthas is driven to his knees before retreating into Icecrown.
Bolvar, engulfed in plague, staggers among the dying: “Fall back…”
The Cleansing: Alexstrasza and the red dragonflight arrive. The dragons incinerate the battlefield with dragonfire, burning away the plague, the Forsaken catapults, and Putress’s forces. The field is left a charred wasteland. No survivors visible.
After the Cinematic
When the cinematic ends, the zone phases permanently.
All Alliance NPCs, Horde forces, and Scourge at and around the Wrathgate are gone. The battlefield is scorched. Only Alexstrasza and Korialstrasz (her consort, in elven form) remain. Fordragon Hold is effectively abandoned; all NPCs except the flight master despawn.
You receive the Serenity debuff, which prevents spellcasting and mounting. It fades after a short time or when you leave the immediate area. Hearthstones still function. The flight master remains at Fordragon Hold and can fly you out.
Hidden Dialogue (Draconic Language): After the cinematic, Alexstrasza and Korialstrasz have a scripted exchange:
Korialstrasz: “My Queen, do they know?”
Alexstrasza: “No, my beloved.” Alexstrasza then speaks in Draconic: “Ashj zila gul kirasath lok ante il lok buras danashj Gul gul.”
Korialstrasz nods: “They will not.”
Alexstrasza whispers to you: “Come to me.”
The line was never meant to be readable in-game; it renders as scrambled Draconic. Its meaning leaked out anyway and circulated through the lore community. It means: “They must not discover the fate of the young paladin. Not yet.”
The “young paladin” is Bolvar. The dragons know he survived the plague and dragonfire, but are hiding this from the mortal factions. This foreshadows the Icecrown Citadel raid finale two content patches later.
Replaying the Cinematic: Speak to Alexstrasza after the event and select “Alexstrasza, can you show me what happened here?” to rewatch the cinematic at any time.
Tips
Lore Context
Everything you have done since parachuting into the Carrion Fields outside Wintergarde Keep has been building to this moment. The Mausoleum infiltration, Plunderbeard’s death, the discovery of Inigo Montoy’s betrayal, the phylactery recovery from Icestorm, the defeat of Thel’zan the Duskbringer, Bolvar’s personal commendation, the audience with Alexstrasza, the destruction of Grand Necrolord Antiok’s frost wyrm factory at Galakrond’s Rest.
All of it was to make this assault possible. Bolvar says as much in his text: the frost wyrms are neutralized, the Scourge’s grip on the Dragonblight is broken, and the combined forces of the Alliance and Horde are finally ready to breach the Wrathgate.
And it ends in catastrophe.
Putress’s betrayal is the defining event of WotLK’s narrative arc. In one stroke, it kills Dranosh Saurfang, mortally wounds Bolvar, shatters the Alliance-Horde truce, and forces both factions away from Icecrown.
The war against the Lich King does not end here. It barely begins.
The Follow-Up Chain (WotLK Classic)
After the cinematic, Alexstrasza gives Reborn From The Ashes, which sends you to King Varian Wrynn in Stormwind. This leads through Fate, Up Against Your Will, A Royal Coup, The Killing Time, and ultimately The Battle For The Undercity, where Varian Wrynn personally leads an assault to reclaim the Undercity from Putress and Varimathras.
Important note about Battle for the Undercity in WotLK Classic: This event is available but notoriously buggy. It can get stuck mid-progress, locking players in a phased version of Undercity/Orgrimmar where vendors and trainers vanish.
Blizzard added a Bronze Dragonflight NPC named Zidormi to Tirisfal Glades who allows you to manually toggle the Battle for the Undercity phase on/off if you get stuck.

The skies held no frost wyrms, and for the first time since arriving in Northrend, I could look up without expecting death from above.
Fordragon Hold bustled when I landed, as soldiers checked weapons, formed ranks, spoke in low voices about what came next. The Wrathgate loomed, that wound of dark saronite carved into the mountains. Behind it lay Icecrown. Behind it lay everything.
Bolvar received my report with a nod.
“Know this,” he said. “All that you have done has led to this moment. Without your efforts, we would have been finished.” He turned toward the gate, toward the Scourge forces massing beyond, and his hand rested on his sword. “Now, stand guard as I take to the field and end this.”
He walked toward his troops. They parted for him, then fell in behind. Someone shouted “For Lordaeron!” and the cry spread through the ranks.
I watched him go. The Highlord who’d saved us from Thel’zan, who’d recognized what Father Montoy’s fall meant for all of us. Now he marched toward the Lich King’s door with an army at his back and hope in his voice.
I took my post. I stood guard. And I watched the end begin.
The battlefield was ash, Bolvar was gone, Saurfang’s son was dead, and Putress’s laughter was still coming off the cliffs. Alexstrasza stood in the quiet with a message for Varian Wrynn that would burn all the way to the Undercity, Reborn From The Ashes.
