Varian waited.
I delivered the message exactly as the Warchief had given it: “Your champion, Bolvar, died in defense of our world. The Horde is saddened by the loss of such a great hero, but the Horde was not responsible for the cowardly attacks made by Putress at the Wrathgate. We have also lost mighty heroes because of this betrayal.” I paused, watching Varian’s face. “Tell your king that we will do everything in our power to bring the perpetrators of this cowardly act to justice. We will do all that we can to avoid conflict with the Alliance, but we will not hesitate to defend ourselves if provoked.”
Varian processed the words and his hands flexed at his sides.
“They have lost the Undercity?” He said it slowly, tasting the opportunity. “Then the time to strike is now. We will deal with Putress ourselves and retake the Ruins of Lordaeron for the Alliance!”
Thrall had offered condolences, shared grief, promised justice. Varian heard only one thing: the Horde’s capital in the Eastern Kingdoms stood undefended.
Putress had to answer for what he did. Varimathras had to be destroyed. And Lordaeron had belonged to the Alliance once, before the plague, before the Scourge, before everything fell apart.
But Thrall had said “we will bring the perpetrators to justice.” He meant the Horde would handle their own traitors.
I followed my king’s orders.
Varian had decided, and Jaina opened a portal to Tirisfal Glades, which meant The Killing Time was about to start whether anyone in that room wanted it or not.
