Objective: Deliver Quarterflash’s Package to High Commander Halford Wyrmbane at Wintergarde Keep.
Walkthrough
This is a simple delivery quest within Wintergarde Keep. There is no combat, no mine visit, and no machinery to inspect. Quarterflash gives you a package containing an ore sample and his analysis, and you walk it over to Wyrmbane. That’s it.
Quarterflash’s quest text acknowledges Slinkin’s sacrifice: “We must take solace in the fact that Slinkin’s death, while tragic, was for the greater good. His discovery coupled with your heroics in the mine and the samples you returned brings us one step closer to understanding the Scourge war machine.”
Turn in to Wyrmbane, who is nearby in the Keep.

Wyrmbane’s Blunt Honesty
After all the effort to recover ore samples, seal the mine, and get Quarterflash’s scientific analysis delivered, Wyrmbane reads it and admits:
“I am by no means a scientist, so you’ll have to forgive my plebeian understanding of what has been written. Now, according to this analysis, assuming I have the brain power of at least an adolescent school boy, we still don’t know jack squat about the Scourge war machine. The only thing we do know is that the Scourge uses this foul metal to craft its siege engines, armor and weaponry.”
Slinkin died for this intelligence. Quarterflash analyzed it. And the conclusion is: they know the Scourge uses the metal for weapons, which they already knew.
The Bigger Picture
Of course, Slinkin’s intelligence wasn’t actually in vain. His dying note contained the words “Yogg-Saron” and “saronite,” which will eventually prove critical as the expansion progresses.
But at this point in the story, Wintergarde’s leadership simply doesn’t have the context to understand what they’ve found. They’re soldiers, not archaeologists or Old God scholars.
That understanding won’t come until the Icecrown and Storm Peaks storylines peel back the layers connecting saronite to Yogg-Saron’s prison beneath Ulduar.

“We must take solace in the fact that Slinkin’s death, while tragic, was for the greater good,” he said. “His discovery, coupled with your heroics in the mine and the samples you returned, brings us one step closer to understanding the Scourge war machine.” He nodded toward the parcel. “This holds a sample of the strange ore and my analysis. Take it to High Commander Wyrmbane.”
Wyrmbane accepted the package with a grunt of acknowledgment.
“I heard about your bravery in the mine.” He broke the seal and unfolded Quarterflash’s report, scanning the cramped gnomish script.
“I am by no means a scientist,” he said, “so you’ll have to forgive my plebian understanding of what has been written.” He flipped a page, then another. “Now, according to this analysis, assuming I have the brain power of at least an adolescent school boy…” He set the report down with a dry smile. “We still don’t know jack squat about the Scourge war machine.”
I waited.
“The only thing we do know is that the Scourge uses this foul metal to craft its siege engines, armor, and weaponry.” He tapped the ore sample. “Which we already knew.”
A gnome had died for this and the sum total of our knowledge: the enemy used the ore to kill us.
Wyrmbane knew perfectly well where the war went next, because Thel’zan the Duskbringer was still under the Carrion Fields raising an army out of Wintergarde’s own dead, which means going Into Hostile Territory.
