Vikstone's War JournalGretchen caught my arm as I turned toward the village. “When the Hyldnir took our men, they also took all our equipment. Of course, it’s more important that we get our boys back, but if you run into any of our equipment, I’d really appreciate it if you brought it back to us.”

The crates weren’t hard to spot. Goblin engineering has a particular aesthetic. The Hyldnir guarding them were harder to ignore.
A spellcaster saw me first. Frost magic gathered in her hands, then launched in a crystalline bolt. I angled my shield to meet it. The spell shattered against titansteel and scattered back toward her in frozen shards. She flinched. I didn’t give her time to cast again.
More came. Axe-wielders and spellcasters both, frost and steel filling the air between us. The casters learned quickly that their magic found only my shield, returning to them as broken ice and borrowed force. The melee fighters learned slower lessons about overcommitting against a patient enemy. My mace taught remedial courses.
Eight crates, scattered across the village and inside their longhouses. Eight trips through hostile ground, my shield collecting a thin rime of frost from deflected spells.
Gretchen examined the salvage with professional detachment. “Thanks! We’ll see what we can do to salvage these parts!”
They’d lost men, lost equipment, lost ground. They were already rebuilding.
