Walkthrough

Find Exhausted Vrykul

• Head down the stairs from Mildred’s position into the mine tunnels. Look for Exhausted Vrykul sitting or lying on the ground. They’re scattered throughout the tunnels but concentrated more heavily in the left-hand tunnel after descending the stairs.
• Hunters can use Track Humanoids to locate them on the minimap.

Use the Disciplining Rod

• Target an Exhausted Vrykul and use the Disciplining Rod from your inventory (or quest item bar). Two outcomes are possible:
  • They comply: The vrykul gets up and says “Back… to… work!” You receive quest credit.
  • They fight back: The vrykul attacks you. They use Desperate Blow, which stuns you for 3 seconds while dealing 200% weapon damage. The vrykul are level 77-80 and not elite, so they go down quickly. Killing them still gives quest credit.
• Mildred’s quest text acknowledges this: “You’ll want to inflict pain, not death. Well, most of the time anyway.”

Practical Tips

• Set pets to Passive before starting. Hunter and Warlock pets may attack neutral vrykul you haven’t used the rod on yet, which wastes potential targets and creates unnecessary combat.
• If you’re not getting quest credit, check that you’re not in a raid group. Raid groups disable quest progress.
• After completing the quest, Mildred may appear hostile when you return to turn in (same bug as the previous quest). Relogging fixes this.

Lore Context

You’re posing as a Hyldnir overseer and beating enslaved male vrykul with a rod to “motivate” them back to work. Mildred’s casual cruelty (“I hope you didn’t slay too many of the mongrels. We need the manpower.”) establishes the Hyldnir’s treatment of their captives.

The quest deliberately parallels the Horde starting quest Lazy Peons from the Valley of Trials, where new orc players use a similar “Foreman’s Blackjack” to wake up sleeping peons. The structure is identical (use item on 6 inactive NPCs, some fight back), but the tone is much darker.

The peons were goofing off; these vrykul are enslaved prisoners who’ve collapsed from exhaustion. The parallel highlights how far your undercover role forces you to go.

This also sets up the Maintaining Discipline daily quest, which becomes available later in the chain from Gretta the Arbiter at Brunnhildar Village, using the exact same mechanic.
