Rhino Mastery: The Test

Quest 1 of 5 in the Rhino Mastery
Both Factions • Sholazar Basin • Level 76 • Nesingwary Base Camp
Kill 15 Shardhorn Rhinos northwest of Nesingwary Base Camp.
Hemet Nesingwary at Nesingwary Base Camp [27, 59] sends you after 15 Shardhorn Rhinos. Best concentration around [40, 48] northwest of camp. Rhinos are neutral, so pick targets freely. Do alongside Dreadsaber Mastery: Becoming a Predator (same area, unlocks simultaneously). All 15 kills count toward The Great Hunter's Challenge if active.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Fifteen shardhorn rhinos taught Vikstone that the biggest difference between hunting cats and hunting rhinos is what happens when you fail to dodge. Hemet approved and mentioned a patriarch somewhere in the jungle, because Nesingwary hunts always have one more level.

“No rough landing is going to stop ol’ Hemet from mastering the largest game Sholazar has to offer. In the wilds northwest of the camp, the jungles are ruled by the mighty shardhorn rhino. You can prove your worth to the expedition, lad, by showing me that you’re tough enough to face down those powerful beasts.”

Quest Overview:
Objective: Hunt 15 Shardhorn Rhinos to prove your rhino hunting prowess.
Quest Giver: Hemet Nesingwary at Nesingwary’s Base Camp (26.9, 59.2).
Coordinates: Shardhorn Rhinos roam north of the base camp, particularly around 40.8, 47.7.

Key Tips:
Where to Find Shardhorn Rhinos:
The densest population of rhinos is north of the base camp, around 40, 48.
Check open fields and avoid heavily wooded areas, as rhinos tend to roam plains.
Efficient Hunting:
Pair this quest with others in the area:
Dreadsaber Mastery: Becoming a Predator
The Great Hunter’s Challenge
Your rhino kills will count toward the 60 game animals needed for The Great Hunter’s Challenge.
Combat Notes:
Shardhorn Rhinos are neutral and will not attack unless provoked.
They are easy to kite for ranged classes and pose little threat to melee players.
Respawn Rate:
If the area is heavily populated with players, don’t hesitate to explore a wider range of coordinates.
Rhinos respawn fairly quickly, so wait a few moments if needed.

Class-Specific Tips:
Ranged Classes: Use ranged attacks to pull rhinos in open areas.
Skinners: Bring skinning tools, as rhinos yield Borean Leather and occasionally Arctic Fur.

Efficiency Notes:
Completing this quest advances the Rhino Mastery chain, which is a critical part of the overarching Nesingwary questline in Sholazar Basin.
As with other Nesingwary quests, combining tasks reduces travel and downtime.

Trivia:
The Nesingwary questline spans multiple expansions, with Hemet being a recurring character in Stranglethorn Vale, Nagrand, and now Sholazar Basin.
Quest Giver: Hemet Nesingwary at Nesingwary’s Base Camp (26.9, 59.2).
Where to Find Shardhorn Rhinos: The densest population of rhinos is north of the base camp, around 40, 48. Check open fields and avoid heavily wooded areas, as rhinos tend to roam plains.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Hemet doesn’t waste time: “No rough landing is going to stop ol’ Hemet from mastering the largest game Sholazar has to offer.” He directs you to the wilds northwest of camp, where the jungles are ruled by the shardhorn rhino.

Where to find Shardhorn Rhinos:

  • Northwest of camp [28, 52] to [39, 49]: Rhinos begin appearing almost immediately north of the base camp and extend in a wide band northwest toward Bittertide Lake. The spread is from [28, 52] along the base of the Suntouched Pillar east to [39, 49].
  • Best concentration: [40, 48] area. There’s a good spreead at [40.82, 47.77].
  • Rhinos are neutral and won’t attack unless you engage them first, so you can pick your targets freely without worrying about adds.

This is a straightforward kill quest. 15 rhinos at this level goes quickly, especially with the dense population in the recommended area.

Skinning bonus: If you have Skinning, Sholazar’s beasts (including these rhinos) yield Borean Leather with a rare chance at Arctic Fur. With 15 guaranteed kills, this quest is a decent leather haul for skinners already in the area.

Lore Context

Unlike the Dreadsaber chain (given by Buck Cantwell) and the Crocolisk chain (given by Drostan), the Rhino Mastery chain comes from Hemet himself. This makes thematic sense: rhinos are the “largest game Sholazar has to offer,” and Hemet has always reserved the biggest targets for his personal attention.

His quest text references the “rough landing” (the expedition’s crashed plane), reinforcing that nothing stops this dwarf from hunting.

Hemet’s completion text foreshadows the chain’s progression: “There’s more to rhino hunting than just staring down the beast as it charges you and hoping your aim is true. No, you’ll need more than that to take on the rhino patriarch that’s rumored to dwell in the jungle.” The “rhino patriarch” is Farunn, the chain’s ultimate target.

The Rhino Mastery chain is notably the longest of the three mastery lines. While the Dreadsaber and Crocolisk chains each have 3 quests, the Rhino chain extends to 4 quests (The Test → The Chase → An Offering for Soo-rahm → The Bones of Nozronn), branching into Oracle-related territory after the hunt itself concludes.

Cross-Expansion: The Nesingwary Assignment Structure

  • Each Nesingwary expansion assigns the three mastery chains to different members of the expedition. In Sholazar, Hemet takes the rhinos (the prestige prey), Buck Cantwell handles dreadsabers, and Drostan manages crocolisks. This hierarchy reflects Hemet’s character: he delegates the smaller game to subordinates and keeps the most impressive trophy hunt for himself.

“No rough landing is going to stop ol’ Hemet from mastering the largest game Sholazar has to offer.” Hemet grinned the way he always did. “In the wilds northwest of the camp, the jungles are ruled by the mighty shardhorn rhino. You can prove your worth to the expedition, lad, by showing me that you’re tough enough to face down those powerful beasts.”

Vikstone Portrait Act 2

The shardhorns ruled the northwest jungle with hide like carved stone, horns that could gut an elekk. The first one I found was drinking from a stream, and when it saw me, there was only irritation at the interruption.

Different tactics than dreadsabers. Where cats are speed and reflex, rhinos are momentum and mass. You don’t meet a charge head-on. You step aside. You strike where the hide is thinnest. You respect the horn.

“Well, well, well, it looks like you’ve survived the rhinos, after all, and in pretty good shape if I do say so myself.” Hemet looked me over when I returned. “But there’s more to rhino hunting than just staring down the beast as it charges you and hoping your aim is true. No, you’ll need more than that to take on the rhino patriarch that’s rumored to dwell in the jungle.”

A patriarch. Of course there was.

Hemet was satisfied with the kill count, and the next step required tracking the patriarch through territory Vikstone hadn’t seen yet in Rhino Mastery: The Chase
