Dreadsaber Mastery: Becoming a Predator

Dreadsaber Mastery: Becoming a Predator

Quest 1 of 3 in the Dreadsaber Mastery
Both Factions • Sholazar Basin • Level 76 • Nesingwary Base Camp
Kill 15 Dreadsabers in the wilderness south of Nesingwary Base Camp.
Buck Cantwell at Nesingwary Base Camp [27, 59] sends you after 15 Dreadsabers. Best areas: near camp [25-27, 61] or south of the river [27, 73]. Do alongside Rhino Mastery: The Test (same areas, unlocks at the same time). All 15 kills count toward The Great Hunter's Challenge if active. Watch for Dreadsabers kill-stealing your Longneck Grazers if working on A Steak Fit for a Hunter.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Vikstone found the dreadsabers south of camp and discovered why Buck Cantwell spoke about them with a hunter's respect instead of a hunter's confidence. Fifteen kills later, his armor had new claw marks and Cantwell had a follow-up question about tracking.

“If you’ve hunted with Hemet before, you know that he’s tested his skill against many large cats, but the dreadsabers here in Sholazar are different. They’re able to bring down larger game than I’ve ever seen a cat hunt. To overcome and kill such a predator is the mark of a true hunter. If you seek to prove you’re up to the challenge, test yourself against the dreadsabers.

They live in the wilderness surrounding the camp and south of the river.”

-Buck Cantwell

Quest Giver: Buck Cantwell — Nesingwary Base Camp [26.8, 59.1]

Turn In: Buck Cantwell — Nesingwary Base Camp

Objective: Kill 15 Dreadsabers (level 75-76).

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Buck Cantwell’s quest text directs you to “the wilderness surrounding the camp and south of the river.” Dreadsabers roam widely across western Sholazar, so you won’t need to go far.

Best hunting areas:

  • Near camp [25-27, 61]: Dreadsabers spawn in the immediate area around and slightly north of Nesingwary Base Camp. Convenient if combining with other camp turn-ins.
  • South of the river [26-28, 70-75]: Denser concentration further south. The area around [27, 73] has good spawn density.

15 kills goes quickly with the high spawn rates.

Do Alongside

  • Rhino Mastery: The Test — Unlocks at the same time. Rhinos share the same general areas. Do both simultaneously.
  • The Great Hunter’s Challenge — CRITICAL: If you’ve already completed Kick, What Kick? and picked up the Challenge, all 15 Dreadsaber kills here count toward the Challenge’s 60-animal requirement. Combined with 15 Rhinos from Rhino Mastery: The Test, that’s 30/60 just from these two Mastery quests.
  • A Steak Fit for a Hunter — If available, Longneck Grazers share the same terrain. Watch for Dreadsabers kill-stealing your Grazer tags (they actively hunt them as ambient behavior).

Lore Context

Buck Cantwell is Nesingwary’s dreadsaber specialist. He’s been injured (“my injuries have kept me from venturing outside the camp,” he says in the follow-up quest), so he sends you in his place.

His quest text establishes that Sholazar’s dreadsabers are exceptional hunters: “They’re able to bring down larger game than I’ve ever seen a cat hunt.” This sets up the Mastery chain’s progression from generic kills (this quest) to tracking (Stalking the Prey) to a named elite kill (Ready to Pounce, targeting Shango at Bittertide Falls).

Dreadsabers are Sholazar’s apex feline predators. Their design resembles saber-toothed cats, fitting Sholazar’s prehistoric ecosystem. They actively prey on Longneck Grazers (the zone’s giraffes), which you can observe during gameplay. This predator-prey dynamic mirrors real African savanna ecology: big cats hunting large ungulates, reinforcing Sholazar’s role as a titan-engineered ecosystem that replicates natural food chains.

Cross-Expansion Connection

  • The Nesingwary “Mastery” format is a tradition across expansions. Each zone features three parallel Mastery chains (cats, large herbivores, reptiles/other) with escalating objectives: kill 15 → tracking/collection → elite named target.
  • Classic Stranglethorn had Panthers/Raptors/Tigers, TBC Nagrand had Clefthooves/Talbuks/Windrocs, and Sholazar completes the trilogy with Dreadsabers/Rhinos/Crocolisks.

“If you’ve hunted with Hemet before, you know that he’s tested his skill against many large cats.” Buck Cantwell sized me up. “But the dreadsabers here in Sholazar are different. They’re able to bring down larger game than I’ve ever seen a cat hunt.”

He nodded toward the jungle beyond camp.

“To overcome and kill such a predator is the mark of a true hunter. If you seek to prove you’re up to the challenge, test yourself against the dreadsabers. They live in the wilderness surrounding the camp and south of the river.”

Found them prowling through the tall grass south of camp. Beautiful creatures, and lethal.

Had to think like them.

The work was bloody, but honest. These weren’t mindless undead or corrupted horrors. Just hunters, like me. Better to die to steel than starvation.

“Well, you’ve proven yourself a capable hunter.” Buck examined the claw marks on my armor when I returned. “But how are you as a tracker?”

The killing was done, and Buck wanted to know if Vikstone could track as well as he could fight in Dreadsaber Mastery: Stalking the Prey
