Lore Context
Duke Lankral is now in command of the Shadow Vault’s operations. His briefing lays out the Ebon Blade’s strategy for Jotunheim: the vrykul there constantly fight each other in trials of combat. Winners “ascend” to become Ymirjar, the Lich King’s elite warrior caste stationed in Ymirheim. Losers are reduced to Vargul, mindless scourged rejects.
The Ebon Blade’s plan is to disrupt this pipeline by ensuring more losers than winners emerge, weakening the Lich King’s best troops at the source.
This sets up the extended Jotunheim questline that eventually leads through the Battle at Valhalas arena chain, one of the longest and most combat-intensive quest sequences in Icecrown.

Vikstone's War JournalThree hours on the wall between waves. My left pauldron froze in the joint twice and I had to break it loose with the heel of my hand, and the ram head of the mace had grown a beard of frost that I stopped bothering to knock off.

Then the baron chuckled.
A week ago that man was standing motionless in a Scourge camp pretending to be a corpse with a job.
“I need you to speak with Duke Lankral. He’s in charge here now. You’ll find him inside the vault building proper. Were I you, I would not keep him waiting.”
Lankral holds the middle of the vault hall and the other knights work around him without being told to.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. We owe you a great deal, but we’re not done with you yet. There is a vrykul city just over the mountains to the west, a place called Jotunheim. The vrykul there are in a constant state of challenge to ‘ascend’. The winners go to Ymirheim to serve as the Lich King’s elite warrior caste, the Ymirjar, and the losers are reduced to Scourged Vargul.”
So that is where they come from.
“You are going to be my instrument to see to it that more Vargul than Ymirjar emerge.”
His instrument. Not his ally.
Fordring saluted me on the overlook nine days ago. Lankral has told me what I am for.
And the work itself is not rescue. He does not intend to stop the ascension. He intends to spoil it, so that more of them fail and come out the other side as Vargul, which is to say more Scourge, only worse at it.
Lankral’s method for producing more rejects than elites was not sabotage or poison but something a vrykul could not refuse without disgracing himself, which is why the first order out of the vault was an Honor Challenge.
