“The first step we’re going to take is at a place in Jotunheim called the Savage Ledge. It’s just over the mountains to the west. On the ledge the vrykul warriors are always sparring, being instructed in the finer arts of battle by their thane’s men. I want you to take this flag and issue a challenge to a number of them. Let’s demoralize them with the ‘mere’ skills of a Night Elf, shall we?”

Lore Context
The Savage Ledge is where vrykul warriors undergo their ascension trials. Duke Lankral’s plan is psychological warfare: by having a single mortal champion publicly defeat their fighters using a formal challenge system the vrykul respect, the Ebon Blade undermines their morale and disrupts the pipeline of warriors ascending to Ymirjar status.

Vikstone's War Journal“The first step we’re going to take is at a place in Jotunheim called the Savage Ledge,” Lankral said. “It’s just over the mountains to the west. On the ledge the vrykul warriors are always sparring, being instructed in the finer arts of battle by their thane’s men. I want you to take this flag and issue a challenge to a number of them. Let’s demoralize them with the ‘mere’ skills of a night elf, shall we?”

The duke grinned, his rotting teeth flashing in the dim light of the vault.
He handed me the flag. I am not being sent to win. Anyone here could win. I am being sent because of what I am, and the humiliation is the errand.
Veridian put me down at the edge of the Savage Ledge, and it is exactly what Lankral described. Vrykul sparring in pairs in the snow with older men walking the lines correcting them.
You plant the flag and one of them comes.
The first was called out by name by his instructor, which I did not expect, and he came at me the way they all came at me: square, both hands, everything committed to the opening blow. Against another vrykul it ends the matter. They have been drilling that stroke against each other for a thousand years and the drill is perfect and it only works on people their own size.
I gave ground on the first swing and took his knee on the recovery, and he went down in front of the men who taught him.
The second had watched the first and adjusted. He was better. The fourth was the best of them and put my back into the snow before I got the axe under his arm. The last one hesitated before he answered the flag, and I saw him do it, and so did everybody on that ledge.
That is what Lankral actually bought. Not six bodies. One young vrykul pausing in front of his own instructors before he picked up the challenge.
“Already I’m hearing reports of the prowess you displayed on the Savage Ledge. Excellent… excellent!” The duke flashed his rictus smile again and I could almost hear the wheels in his head turning. “And now I think it’s time to issue a decree to the thane of those vrykul that you so easily defeated.”
Six beaten champions travel fast in a culture that measures everything by combat, and Lankral had been waiting for exactly that reputation before sending his messenger to the thane’s own hall carrying the Shadow Vault Decree.
