Battle at Valhalas

Quest 7 of 7 in the Valhalas Chain
Both Factions • Icecrown • Level 80 • Njorndar Village
Fly north to Valhalas and speak with the val'kyr Geirrvif.
No fight and nothing to collect. The arena sits at 33, 35 in the heart of Jotunheim and the quest ends on dialogue. Bring the group before you talk to her a second time. The first conversation turns this in, the second one starts the arena, and everything from there through the final round is tagged for five players with the difficulty climbing each round. Plan the whole run in one sitting, since she hands you the next challenger the moment the last one falls and reassembling a group between rounds is the only thing here that will actually cost you an evening.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Geirrvif's position was that beating the finest warriors in Jotunheim proved only that those warriors had never deserved the title. Mardagan looked a while at the skulls set into the arena wall and told the new paladin it would be fine, and Vikstone heard how little he meant it.

“I see and hear many things, Vikstone, and something very important has happened since your defeat of Overthane Balargarde: you are wanted for battle in Valhalas! You will find the battle pit to the north. Go now with your friends and speak with Geirrvif the val’kyr.

The challengers that she will offer you within Valhalas are sure to require their help.”

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

  • Fly north from the Bone Witch’s cave to Valhalas [33, 35], the open gladiatorial pit in the heart of Jotunheim. Geirrvif, a val’kyr, stands at the edge of the arena. Speak to her. The quest completes on dialogue.
  • Geirrvif acknowledges your defeat of Overthane Balargarde and declares you worthy of fighting in Valhalas. She offers you a series of increasingly dangerous challengers. Talk to her again when your group is ready to begin the arena chain.

Efficiency Tips

  • Bring your group before accepting the next quest. Everything from this point forward (Fallen Heroes through Final Challenge) is tagged as a 5-player group quest. The six fights escalate in difficulty, ending with Prince Sandoval, a Darkfallen blood prince sent from Icecrown Citadel. Well-geared level 80 players can solo the earlier rounds, but the later fights are significantly harder.
  • Plan to do the entire arena series in one session. The fights are sequential, and Geirrvif offers the next challenge immediately after each victory. The full chain is:

Round Quest Opponent Type
1 Fallen Heroes Vargul warriors (multiple) Group (5)
2 Khit’rix the Dark Master Khit’rix, a Nerubian crypt lord Group (5)
3 The Return of Sigrid Iceborn Sigrid Iceborn (rematch, on a proto-drake) Group (5)
4 Carnage! Carnage (flesh giant) Group (5)
5 Thane Deathblow Ymirjar thane Group (5)
6 Final Challenge Prince Sandoval (Darkfallen blood prince) Group (5)

The final quest turns in to Gjonner the Merciless, who overlooks the southern lip of Valhalas. Upon completing the Final Challenge, Geirrvif declares you “CHAMPION OF VALHALAS!”

Lore & Secrets

Valhalas: WotLK’s Ring of Blood

This arena chain is the spiritual successor to the Ring of Blood in Nagrand (TBC) and the Amphitheater of Anguish in Zul’Drak (WotLK). All three follow the same format: a series of escalating boss fights in an arena with a spectator NPC announcing each round.

The tradition continued in later expansions with the Crucible of Carnage (Cataclysm), Arena of Annihilation (Mists of Pandaria), and the Ring of Blood again in Warlords of Draenor.

Unlike the Ring of Blood and Amphitheater of Anguish, the Valhalas chain requires a lengthy prerequisite questline (the entire Shadow Vault/Bone Witch chain).

Valhalas is WotLK’s version of Valhalla from Norse mythology, the hall where fallen warriors fight, die, and feast for eternity. In the vrykul version, those who prove themselves here ascend to become Ymirjar, the Lich King’s elite warriors.

Those who fail become vargul, mindless undead. Sigrid Iceborn’s return in Round 3 is the payoff from your earlier encounter at Savage Ledge during Eliminate the Competition, where she promised she would be “better prepared.”

Word travels in this country faster than the men who make it. The Bone Witch had me before I finished cleaning the shield.

Good luck.”

Valhalas. Where their champions prove out or become vargul.

Mardagan was already waiting, and he had brought somebody with him. Superjosh, another paladin, broad through the shoulders and keen to be there. Nobody stays keen here much past the second week.

“Two paladins,” I said.

“You’re welcome,” Mardagan said. He has kept me breathing through a good deal of this place.

The arena stands up off the glacier in black ice, and the skulls of everyone who fought there and was found unworthy are set into the walls. Geirrvif hung above the floor of it.

“You have bested our finest warriors. Your name is renowned, Vikstone.” She had the name right, which is more than any ally of mine managed for the first month. “Perhaps you think that this concerns me: it does not. If they can fall to you then they are not worthy and should be nothing but lowly vargul!”

She came lower and looked the three of us over. A night elf and two humans, and as far as she was concerned the only thing our record established was that her own champions had deserved what happened to them.

“But perhaps I can give you and your friends different sport. Valhalas is also a place for combat of all types with many different kinds of foes. Speak to me again when you and your friends are ready to proceed. We shall see if you are truly worthy.”

Superjosh was looking at the skulls. Mardagan was looking at Superjosh looking at the skulls.

“It’ll be fine,” Mardagan said, and I have heard him lie better.

Geirrvif set the terms and let them pick the moment, and the moment they pick her up on it the pit opens with Battle at Valhalas: Fallen Heroes.
