Defeat Prince Sandoval
Prince Sandoval is a San’layn blood prince, one of the Darkfallen: undead blood elves who serve as elite agents of the Lich King. He is a fundamentally different type of opponent from anything in the previous five rounds. Where the earlier fights tested raw survivability, Sandoval tests your ability to manage two distinct phases and the transitions between them.
| Ability | Effect | Phase | How to Handle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee (Dual Wield) | Main hand ~2,000 + off-hand ~1,000 per swing | Ground | High sustained melee damage. Hits fast. Shield Block, Holy Shield, and Bone Shield all help. His burst comes from stacking melee with fire abilities in quick succession. |
| Engulfing Strike | Fire damage (~5,000) + Fire DoT (approximately 3,000 per tick over 9 sec) | Ground | The most dangerous ground-phase ability. The DoT is a significant portion of his total damage. Dispel or cleanse the DoT immediately. Paladins can Cleanse it. DKs should pop Anti-Magic Shell before re-engaging after Air phase, as Sandoval has a strong tendency to open with Engulfing Strike when he lands. |
| Fire Nova | Fire damage to all nearby enemies | Ground | AoE burst on top of melee damage. Creates dangerous windows when combined with Engulfing Strike. |
| Fire Shield | Self-buff: enemies take 50% increased Fire damage. Sandoval levitates and rains fireballs. | Transition | The herald of the Air phase. When you see Fire Shield cast, immediately start running toward the arena edge. He rises into the air and begins Ember Shower. He takes reduced damage (approximately half) while Fire Shield is active, so ranged DPS should still attack but expect lower returns. |
| Ember Shower | Fire damage to all enemies within ~30 yards, hitting repeatedly | Air | Multiple small hits (~750 each) over approximately 20 seconds. Individually weak, but they stack up. The range is approximately 30-35 yards. Run beyond this range and you take zero damage. This is your healing/bandage/mana recovery window. Do NOT run so far that you exit the arena ring. |
The fight follows a predictable rhythm:
| Phase | What Happens | Your Priority | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ground Phase | Sandoval fights in melee. Uses Engulfing Strike, Fire Nova, and dual-wield attacks. | Tank and burn. Cleanse DoTs. Save defensives for Fire Nova + Engulfing Strike overlap. | ~15-20 seconds |
| Transition | Sandoval casts Fire Shield, begins levitating. | Start running toward the edge immediately. You will take a few Ember Shower hits while moving out. | ~2-3 seconds |
| Air Phase | Sandoval hovers, raining Ember Shower fireballs over the arena. Still targetable by ranged. | At 30+ yards, you are safe. Bandage, heal, use Divine Plea, eat, drink. Ranged classes can DPS (at half effectiveness). | ~20 seconds |
| Landing | Sandoval descends and re-engages. High chance of opening with Engulfing Strike. | Pop Anti-Magic Shell (DK) or Fire Resistance Aura (Paladin) before he reaches you. Let him come to you instead of charging in. | ~2-3 seconds |
The fight is long because of the Air phases. Expect 10-15+ minutes for solo kills. The upside is that every Air phase gives you a free recovery window. If you can survive the Ground phase, you can heal to full during Air.
Solo Strategy
Ironically, despite being the chain’s final boss, Prince Sandoval is widely considered easier to solo than Thane Banahogg. Banahogg’s relentless pressure with no breaks is more dangerous than Sandoval’s predictable cycle with built-in recovery windows. The key is patience: do not rush, and treat every Air phase as a gift.
| Class | Viability | Strategy | Key Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood/Unholy DK | Strong | The ideal solo class. Army of the Dead on pull. Death Strike sustain during Ground. Anti-Magic Shell on every landing transition (he almost always opens with Engulfing Strike). AMS also works during Ember Shower if you cannot outrange it in time. Bandage during Air phase. Anti-Magic Zone if specced. Mark of Blood (Blood DK) makes Ember Shower heal you instead of hurting you, since it consists of many small hits. | This fight specifically is described as “very easy” by DK soloers. |
| Prot Paladin | Strong | Fire Resistance Aura significantly reduces all of Sandoval’s damage. Seal/Judgement of Light for sustain. Cleanse the Engulfing Strike DoT immediately (the DoT ticks for ~3k and will kill you if left up). Sacred Shield for Ground phase. Divine Plea during Air phases for mana recovery. Bubble available for emergencies but rarely needed. | Players in Naxx10/25 gear rarely need to bubble. The Cleanse capability alone makes Paladins uniquely suited for this fight. |
| Feral Druid (Bear) | Strong | Same approach as previous rounds. Run out for Air phase, heal with HoTs + bandages, re-engage. The lack of fire damage reduction or Cleanse makes Ground phase harder, but bear mitigation handles the melee component. Bring a mana potion for shifting to caster to heal during Air phase. | Not hard, just long. |
| Ret Paladin | Moderate | Switch to Seal of Light for sustain. Fire Resistance Aura. Judgement of Light. Art of War instant Flash of Light procs are your lifeline during Ground. Lay on Hands for emergency. Can finish with Hammer of Wrath below 20%. | Solo-viable but the fight is very long. Cleanse the DoT. |
| Hunter (BM) | Strong | Pet tanks in melee while you DPS from 30+ yards. During Air phase, your pet’s innate AoE damage reduction makes Ember Shower trivial for it. Stay at range and Sandoval’s ground-phase melee never touches you. Mend Pet constantly. Fire Shield’s reduced damage applies to your attacks, but the fight is still straightforward. | Easier fight in the chain for hunters. Complete opposite of Thane Banahogg’s aggro problems. |
| Warlock | Moderate | Voidwalker/Felguard tanks. Stay at range. Health Funnel during Ground. DoTs keep working during Air phase. The pet-aggro issues from Banahogg do NOT apply here. Sandoval behaves normally with pet aggro. Demonic Circle Teleport for emergency repositioning if you run too close to the edge. | Send in your VW and keep the health funnel up. |
| Enh Shaman | Difficult | Spirit Wolves and Fire Elemental on pull. Biggest problem: when Sandoval flies up, your Spirit Wolves timer keeps ticking and you lose valuable uptime. Heal to full during Air, let him come to you on landing. Maelstrom Weapon instant heals. Very tight on resources during long fights. | Doable. |
| Shadow Priest | Not recommended for solo | Sandoval’s fire burst can rip through 15k health before you get a heal off. | Don’t attempt. |
| Prot Warrior | Moderate | Shield Block during Ground. The fire damage has no physical component to block, making Warriors less efficient than Paladins. Spell Reflect may work on Engulfing Strike. Bandage during Air phase. Long fight but survivable with raid gear. | Difficult. |

The San’layn and the Blood Princes
Prince Sandoval is a San’layn, one of the Darkfallen: blood elves who were among Kael’thas Sunstrider’s greatest followers until they were raised into undeath by Arthas following Illidan’s failed assault on the Frozen Throne. Cold, arrogant, and vampiric, the San’layn serve as the Lich King’s elite agents throughout Northrend.
Players have already encountered San’layn princes during their journey: Prince Keleseth in Utgarde Keep (Howling Fjord), Prince Taldaram in Ahn’kahet (Dragonblight), and Prince Valanar disguised as “Counselor Talbot” in Valiance Keep (Borean Tundra).
Sandoval is the fourth San’layn prince players meet during leveling, and the only one fought in open-world content rather than a dungeon.
All four princes ultimately serve Blood-Queen Lana’thel, who commands the San’layn from the Crimson Hall within Icecrown Citadel. Three of the four (Keleseth, Valanar, and Taldaram) return as the Blood Prince Council raid encounter in ICC.
Sandoval does not appear in the raid, making his death at Valhalas his only appearance and his final end.
“From the Depths of Icecrown Citadel”
Geirrvif’s introduction makes clear that Sandoval does not fight at Valhalas by vrykul tradition. He was not challenged, did not request entry, and was not invited. He comes because the Lich King sent him.
Word of your victories “reached deep into Icecrown Citadel” and Sandoval is dispatched to silence you. This makes Round 6 unique in the series: it is not a test of honor but an assassination attempt disguised as a duel. The Lich King’s representative crashing the vrykul’s sacred arena is itself an insult to Valhalas.
When you win, Geirrvif’s announcement carries genuine shock: “The unthinkable has happened… [Name] has slain Prince Sandoval! In defeating him, [he/she] and [his/her] fighting companions have proven themselves worthy of battle in this most sacred place of vrykul honor. ALL HAIL [NAME], CHAMPION OF VALHALAS!”
The title “Champion of Valhalas” is the only recognition Geirrvif has ever given an outsider across the entire chain.
Gjonner’s reaction is the opposite: “Your defeat of Prince Sandoval sickens me. An unwashed peasant such as yourself should have willingly given over his life simply for the chance to meet him and kneel at his feet. You’ve earned your damned reward. Be quick about your choosing.”
His grudging, furious acknowledgment of your victory is baked into the reward names themselves. Every single chest piece is sarcastically named to reflect his resentment: clothes for a celebration nobody wanted you to win.
Delicious.

Vikstone's War Journal“I’m afraid that your success is going to be your undoing, Vikstone.” If the val’kyr could turn more white, she would. “Word of your success in Valhalas has reached deep into Icecrown Citadel, stirring one whom you have no desire to meet. Prince Sandoval himself is on his way at this very moment. Gjonner warned you that you should run and I cannot disagree. What will you do?”
From the lip, Gjonner. “I laugh at you. I knew that it would come to this in the end. No matter what you do, no matter where you run, Prince Sandoval will find you!”
Mardagan already had the hammer in his hand. Superjosh looked at him, then at me, and drew.

“It’s too late to run now,” Geirrvif said. Then out over the pit: “From the depths of Icecrown Citadel, one of the Lich King’s chosen comes to put an end to the existence of Vikstone and his friends! Warriors of Jotunheim, I present to you, Blood Prince Sandoval!”
Without warning, Prince Sandoval appeared inside Valhalas. Armor the red of arterial blood, and a smile with more teeth in it than the face had room for. The cold he brought with him had appetite in it, which the cold in this country does not usually bother with.
“Hardly a fitting introduction, Spear-Wife. Now, who is this outsider that I’ve been hearing so much about?”
Then, before anybody answered him: “I will make this as easy as possible for you. Simply come here and die. That is all that I ask for your many trespasses. For your sullying this exalted place of battle.” And then the shriek. “FOR YOUR EFFRONTERY TO THE LICH KING!”
He crossed that floor faster than Banahogg and Sigrid put together. I planted the shield and held, and his blade came off the titansteel. Mardagan’s Light went up on my left, and the san’layn came off me hissing, his own blood magic cooking where the holy fire had touched it.
Then he opened my shield arm and the blood magic reached into the cut and pulled, and I watched a gash close on his flank while mine widened.
Superjosh worked it out before either of us. “He’s healing from us. We have to hit harder than he can feed.”
The younger paladin gave it everything he had left and kept nothing back in hand. Consecration went out across the arena floor. His hammer landed with enough Light behind it to put smoke off the san’layn’s skin, and Sandoval turned on him for it and carved through his guard. Superjosh took it, staggered, and did not stop swinging.
Mardagan and I went into the room he had made. A blood prince drinks fast, but he cannot drink from many directions at once, and by the end he was losing more than he was taking back.
His smile went before he did.
“The unthinkable has happened… Vikstone has slain Prince Sandoval!” I had not heard that pitch out of her in six fights. “In defeating him, he and his fighting companions have proven themselves worthy of battle in this most sacred place of vrykul honor.”
“Your defeat of Prince Sandoval sickens me. An unwashed peasant such as yourself should have willingly given over his life simply for the chance to meet him and kneel at his feet.” Gjonner spat on the stone. “You’ve earned your damned reward. Be quick about your choosing.”
Mardagan sat down beside him and did not say anything. He put a hand on the younger man’s shoulder and left it there.
“ALL HAIL VIKSTONE, CHAMPION OF VALHALAS!”
She put my name out over that pit in the loudest voice she had, and every dead thing on the rim heard it. Frazzle Geargrinder got it right from behind a woodpile. Olakin got it right with a torch in his hand. I am less certain I wanted this lot to have it.
Valhalas was won and the vrykul question closed, and the next thing anyone wanted from Vikstone came from the Argent Crusade in a hurry, sending him To the Rise with all Due Haste!
