Steel Gate Patrol

Quest 4 of 4 in the Steel Gate Chain (Finale) Daily Quest
Alliance • Howling Fjord • Level 71 • Steel Gate
Patrol Steel Gate in a flying machine and kill 8 Gjalerbron Gargoyles.
Steel Gate Chief Archaeologist on the southern rim of the dig site. Board the weapon-fitted flying machine (not the grappling hook version). Gargoyles appear as red circles on your minimap and concentrate above the excavation pit. Open with Rocket (button 4) for burst damage, then channel Machine Gun (button 3) to finish. You don't need to be directly facing the target for hits to connect. Circle the dig site and you'll have 8 kills in a few minutes. Pairs well with Break the Blockade from Cannoneer Ely at Westguard Keep for a quick daily circuit.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
One harrowing cargo run apparently made Vikstone Steel Gate's ace pilot. Gjalerbron gargoyles dove from the northern clouds, and the rockets worked better than expected, fire blooming against gray hide as tracers stitched across the sky.

“Eh? Yer back for another day’s work? Well, alright, here’s the keys. We don’t need any haulin’ today, so just keep an eye out for anything suspicious, okay? I’ve hooked her up with some rockets and a machine gun – just in case.”

-Steel Gate Chief Archaeologist

Objective

LEVEL

71

Requires level

You’re Steel Gate’s ace pilot now, so the Steel Gate Chief Archaeologist wants you to keep patrol around the dig site and fight off anything that attacks. Report back to him when you’re done with your patrol.

Board the Flying Machine:
Interact with the Steel Gate Flying Machine near the quest giver to start the quest.
The flying machine behaves like a typical vehicle, but it uses its own unique flight mechanics (forward thrust, tilt controls, etc.).
Locate Gargoyles:
The gargoyles are scattered across the quarry and appear as markers on your minimap once you're in the flying machine.
They are generally clustered near the northern parts of the quarry.

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: Steel Gate Chief Archaeologist — Steel Gate, Howling Fjord (southern rim of the dig site)

Objective: Patrol Steel Gate in a flying machine and slay 8 Gjalerbron Gargoyles.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Board the Flying Machine

  • Accept the quest from the Chief Archaeologist on the southern edge of Steel Gate, then hop into a nearby flying machine. This time, the machine is fitted with weapons instead of the grappling hook from the previous quest.

Find and Kill the Gargoyles

  • The targets are Gjalerbron Gargoyles, Scourge constructs that patrol the airspace around the dig site. Once airborne, they appear as red circles on your minimap. They’re scattered across the area, with a heavy concentration directly above the excavation pit.
  • The flying machine has two weapons:
    • Rocket (button 4): Burst damage, best used as an opener.
    • Machine Gun (button 3): Channeled sustained fire, use after the rocket to finish targets off.
  • You do not need to be directly facing an enemy for your attacks to connect. Open with the rocket, then channel the machine gun for efficient kills.

Return and Turn In

  • After killing 8 gargoyles, land near the Chief Archaeologist and dismount to turn in. The quest resets daily.

Efficiency Tips

  • This pairs well with Break the Blockade, the other Howling Fjord Alliance daily given by Cannoneer Ely at Westguard Keep’s zeppelin docks. Both are quick, so knock them out together on your daily circuit.
  • The gargoyle density is high enough that you won’t need to hunt far. Circle the dig site, and you’ll have 8 kills in a few minutes.
  • As a daily, this provides repeatable Explorers’ League reputation if you’re working toward that grind.

Lore Context

  • The gargoyles are specifically from Gjalerbron (pronounced “Shalerbron”), a vrykul fortress in the mountains north of Steel Gate, where the Scourge is awakening slumbering vrykul and raising the dead. The gargoyles harassing the excavation are just the leading edge of that threat.
  • The full Gjalerbron quest chain (Dealing With Gjalerbron, Necro Overlord Mezhen, Queen Angerboda, etc.) picks up from Westguard Keep and takes you directly into the fortress.

“Eh? Yer back for another day’s work?”

Vikstone Portrait Act 1
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

The Chief Archaeologist tossed me the keys with more confidence than my piloting skills warranted.

“We don’t need any haulin’ today, so just keep an eye out for anything suspicious, okay? I’ve hooked her up with some rockets and a machine gun. Just in case.”

Apparently one harrowing cargo run made me Steel Gate’s ace pilot. The bar was lower than the canyon floor.

The patrol started quiet in the cold wind, then I saw shapes detached from the northern clouds. Gjalerbron gargoyles, stone-winged and hungry, diving toward the dig site.

The rockets worked better than expected. The first volley scattered their formation, fire blooming against gray hide. The machine gun rattled, tracers stitching across the sky. I was able to wipe them all out. The Scourge had not accounted for aerial resistance.

I landed to find the archaeologist wide-eyed.

“Gargoyles?! I saw ’em out there! Did ya take care of ’em all?” He shook his head. “What’s the world comin’ to when a dwarf cannot even dig without being attacked.” Then he grinned. “Nice shooting, ace. Here’s your wages. Come back tomorrow for another round, ya hear?”

Irena’s excavation was secure and she was doing her best not to worry, since her fiancé had gone out to the Chillmere Coast and sent nothing back, so somebody ought to ask Where is Explorer Jaren?
