Where is Explorer Jaren?

Quest 1 of 2 in the Explorer Jaren Chain
Alliance • Howling Fjord • Level 71 • Steel Gate
Find Explorer Jaren on the Chillmere Coast.
Overseer Irena Stonemantle at Steel Gate [30, 28]. Head southwest from Steel Gate down to the coast. Take the southern path starting around [27.6, 32.1] for the shorter route. Jaren is hiding behind a tree at [24, 32]. No combat. He gives the follow-up And You Thought Murlocs Smelled Bad! on the spot, plus watch for a Scourge Device drop from nearby undead that starts It's a Scourge Device. Also check Old Icefin on a small island offshore for Trident of the Son, easy to miss and counts toward the zone achievement.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Irena's composure cracked for just a moment, the efficient overseer becoming simply a woman worried about someone she loved. Jaren was alive, hiding behind a tree, and when he heard who'd sent Vikstone, he smiled: "She gets that from her father, you know."

“Vikstone, my betrothed, Jaren, went west with a small group of explorers to check into rumors of artifacts on the Chillmere Coast. But there are murloc down there, and I fear the worst has befallen them. Surely you have time to see if they’re alright? There’s a way down to the beach just to the southwest, though watch out for the worgs and other things lurking in the woods.”

-Overseer Irena Stonemantle

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: Overseer Irena Stonemantle — Steel Gate, Howling Fjord [30, 28]

Turn In: Explorer Jaren — Chillmere Coast [24, 32]

Objective: Locate Explorer Jaren, Irena’s fiancé, on the Chillmere Coast.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

  • Accept the quest from Irena at Steel Gate. She’s worried about her betrothed, Jaren, who took a small group of explorers west to investigate artifact rumors on the Chillmere Coast. The coast is crawling with Scourge-corrupted murlocs (Mur’ghoul), and she fears the worst.
  • Head southwest from Steel Gate down to the coast. There are two paths:
    • Southern path (recommended): Starts around [27.6, 32.1], shorter, and leads directly to Jaren.
    • Northern path: Starts around [25.6, 20.3], slightly longer.
  • Jaren is hiding behind a tree at [24, 32] on the Chillmere Coast. He’s staying low because the Scourge are actively converting murlocs into undead all around him.

Efficiency Tips

  • Jaren gives two follow-ups at his location:
    • And You Thought Murlocs Smelled Bad! (kill 15 Scourge of any type along the coast, including Mur’ghoul Corrupters, Flesheaters, Servitor Shades, and Necrotechs)
    • While killing Scourge for that quest, watch for a Scourge Device drop from the undead mobs. It starts It’s a Scourge Device, which leads into a short chain about disabling the scourging crystals’ force fields. The device drops quickly, so you’ll likely get it while working on the Murlocs quest.
  • Also check nearby Old Icefin on a small island off the coast for the quest Trident of the Son. Easy to miss and counts toward the zone achievement.

Lore Context

  • The Chillmere Coast is one of the first places in WotLK where you see the Scourge actively converting living creatures into undead in real time. The murlocs here are being transformed into Mur’ghoul, an undead murloc variant.
  • Jaren, hiding behind his tree and whispering to avoid detection, sells the danger well. His dialogue when you arrive (“She gets that from her father, you know”) is a fun callback to Old Man Stonemantle’s overprotective nature from the My Daughter quest.

Irena’s composure cracked slightly. The efficient overseer became, for a moment, simply a woman worried about someone she loved.

“But there are murlocs down there, and I fear the worst has befallen them. Surely you have time to see if they’re alright? There’s a way down to the beach just to the southwest, though watch out for the worgs and other things lurking in the woods.”

Like father, like daughter.

The descent to Chillmere Coast wound through thick forest, shadows moving at the edge of vision. Worgs watched from the tree line but kept their distance. The beach opened cold and gray, waves hissing against rocky shore.

I found Jaren’s camp easily enough. The dwarf explorer looked up from his notes as I approached, clearly unbothered by mortal peril. When I explained who had sent me, he beamed.

“Irena was concerned about me?” He spoke in hushed tones, almost to himself. “She gets that from her father, you know.”

Jaren was alive and the coast around him was worse than murlocs, with the Scourge turning them undead where they stood, And You Thought Murlocs Smelled Bad! before any of this started.
