And You Thought Murlocs Smelled Bad!

And You Thought Murlocs Smelled Bad!

Quest 2 of 2 in the Explorer Jaren Chain (Finale)
Alliance • Howling Fjord • Level 71 • Chillmere Coast
Kill 15 Scourge of any type along the Chillmere Coast.
Explorer Jaren at [24, 32] on Chillmere Coast. Valid targets include Mur'ghoul Corrupters, Mur'ghoul Flesheaters, Servitor Shades, and Necrotechs. Living (green) murlocs do not count, only Scourge undead. Density is good along the beach, so 15 kills goes fast. While killing, watch for a Scourge Device drop that starts It's a Scourge Device. Also check Old Icefin on a small island offshore for Trident of the Son, an easy-to-miss quest that counts toward I've Toured the Fjord. Do both in the same trip.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
The Scourge were converting murlocs into undead in real time along the tideline, Necrotechs working among them like foremen on an assembly line. Something in the Mur'ghoul's gurgling screams made them worse than any skeleton or ghoul Vikstone had fought.

“Originally I came down here to investigate some rumors about artifacts to be dug up. I knew that there were murlocs along the coast here, but I never in a million years thought I’d see this.

<The explorer pokes his head out to look around the tree.>

The Scourge are out there, and they’re changing murlocs, and anything else they can get their hands on, into the walking dead! Warrior, I think it’s our duty to do something about this. Think you could take out a good chunk of those Scourge?”

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: Explorer Jaren — Chillmere Coast, Howling Fjord [24, 32]

Objective: Kill 15 Scourge of any type along the Chillmere Coast. Return to Explorer Jaren.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

  • Accept the quest from Jaren at his hiding spot behind the tree at [24, 32]. He’s discovered the Scourge are actively converting the local murlocs into undead, and he wants you to cull their numbers.
  • Kill 15 Scourge along the coast. Valid targets include:
  • Important: Living (green) murlocs do not count. Only Scourge-corrupted undead mobs qualify.
  • The Scourge are spread all along the Chillmere Coast beach. Density is good enough that 15 kills shouldn’t take long.
  • Return to Jaren when done. He stays at his tree the entire time.

Efficiency Tips

  • While killing Scourge, watch for a Scourge Device to drop. It starts It’s a Scourge Device, which you turn in to Jaren. This leads into Bring Down Those Shields, a short chain about disabling the scourging crystals’ force fields along the coast. The device drops quickly from the undead mobs, so you’ll almost certainly get it during this quest.
  • Visit Old Icefin on a small island just offshore while you’re down here. He gives Trident of the Son, an easy-to-miss quest that counts toward I’ve Toured the Fjord. The quest involves killing Rotgill, who patrols the southern end of the coast near a wrecked boat.
  • Knock out both the Scourge Device chain and Trident of the Son in the same trip to avoid backtracking to Chillmere Coast later.

Lore Context

The Mur’ghoul are one of WotLK’s creepier additions: murlocs transformed into Scourge undead. The Chillmere Coast is where you first encounter them on a large scale, with scourging crystals dotting the beach and Necrotechs actively running the conversion operation.

This foreshadows the broader Scourge infrastructure you’ll encounter in Dragonblight and Icecrown.

Jaren’s demeanor shifted the moment I settled in for conversation. He poked his head around the tree, scanning the beach, then spoke quickly.

“Originally I came down here to investigate some rumors about artifacts to be dug up. I knew that there were murlocs along the coast here, but I never in a million years thought I’d see this.”

He gestured toward the shoreline.

“The Scourge are out there, and they’re changing murlocs, and anything else they can get their hands on, into the walking dead! I think it’s our duty to do something about this.”

Mur’ghoul. The word came back from briefings at Westguard. Murlocs raised into undeath, their already savage nature twisted into something worse. Flesheaters and Corrupters shambled along the tide line, attended by Servitor Shades. Necrotechs worked among them, continuing the conversion.

They fought like typical Scourge but something in their gurgling screams made them worse than skeleton or ghoul. These had been alive, in their fashion, and now they were tools.

Jaren beamed when I returned, then caught himself and motioned for quiet. “Great job! That’s a lot of Scourge goo all over your stuff though. You might want to think about taking a quick dip in the strait. It’s cold, but it’ll get you cleaned up right quick.”

Somewhere among the undead was a device pulsing with the same energy as the crystals dotting the beach, and Jaren wanted a proper look, because It’s a Scourge Device and it is doing something to that coast.
