Walkthrough

1. Accept the quest from Captain Adams at Westguard Keep.
2. Travel north to Gjalerbron and head to the southeastern platform at [38, 12].
3. Mezhen stands on the upper platform, surrounded by 6-7 regular Necrolords. He is conducting a ritual on a captured prisoner. This is the platform opposite the one where The Frost Wyrm and its Master takes place.
4. Clear the surrounding Necrolords first. They can be pulled individually without aggroing Mezhen.
5. Engage Mezhen. He will shout: “Foolish child, you will not stop what I have set in motion! Now, meet your doom!”
6. After killing Mezhen, loot Mezhen’s Writings from his corpse. This is a quest-starting item that begins The Slumbering King. Do not overlook it.
7. Return to Captain Adams at Westguard Keep.

Tips

• He Is Not “Just Another Necrolord”: Despite what you might expect from a quest that sends you to kill a named version of a trash mob, Mezhen has abilities the regular Necrolords do not. He casts Drain Soul, a 5-second channeled Shadow damage ability, and Raise Dead, which reanimates a fallen Necrolord as a skeletal minion. If you leave Necrolord corpses near him before engaging, he can bring them back. Clear the area around him thoroughly before pulling.
• Clear Necrolords One at a Time: The 6-7 Necrolords surrounding Mezhen can be pulled individually with careful positioning. They cast Shadow Bolt, Drain Life, and Curse of Weakness. Pull them toward the ramp or stairs to avoid accidentally body-pulling Mezhen or additional adds.
• Do Not Skip the Loot: Mezhen’s Writings is a separate quest-starting item that begins The Slumbering King, the next step in the Gjalerbron chain. If you kill Mezhen, turn in to Adams, and forget to loot the Writings, you will have to come back.
• Finish Your Gjalerbron Sweep First: If you still have kills remaining for Dealing With Gjalerbron, Of Keys and Cages, or In Service to the Light, finish those before heading back to Westguard. The Necrolords you clear around Mezhen count toward The Slumbering King if you need Awakening Rods, and the Deathless Watchers for In Service to the Light roam this same platform area.

Story Context

Captain Adams sent you into Gjalerbron during Dealing With Gjalerbron to kill vrykul and gather intelligence. What you found was worse than expected: the Scourge has embedded necromancers inside the vrykul fortress. Adams connects the dots immediately:

“The Scourge are at Gjalerbron and they have necromancers with them! They must be working to bring the vrykul into Arthas’ fold.”

This is the moment Adams realizes that Gjalerbron is not just a vrykul military problem. It is a Scourge recruitment operation. The necrolords are not there to fight the vrykul. They are there to convert them.

Every Dormant Vrykul that the Sleep-Watchers tend and the Rune-Casters ritually awaken is a potential addition to Arthas’s army. The necrolords are the Lich King’s liaisons, ensuring the awakened vrykul serve the Scourge rather than simply returning to their old way of life.

Adams wants the head of the operation removed: “I want the leader of these necrolords eliminated! Do whatever it takes, <name>, but see to it that Necro Overlord Mezhen, and whatever he’s attempting to accomplish, is neutralized.”

His completion text reveals genuine relief: “Well, that should take some of the pressure off of us.” Then he adds something telling: “Pick something from the treasury, boy! It’s the least we can do!” Adams is opening the Westguard armory to you. 

The Horde version from Chieftain Ashtotem carries a different emotional register. Where Adams speaks as a military commander protecting Alliance interests, Ashtotem speaks as a tribal leader confronting something spiritually wrong: “The dead ones are at Gjalerbron and they have necromancers with them?” The taunka do not have a word for “Scourge” in their cultural vocabulary. Ashtotem calls them “the dead ones” and recognizes them as an affront to the natural order.

Lore Note: The Scourge’s Recruitment Strategy at Gjalerbron

Mezhen’s presence at Gjalerbron reveals the Lich King’s approach to the vrykul: he is not conquering them through force. He is embedding agents inside their own awakening operation. The necrolords position themselves as helpers in the ritual process, making themselves indispensable to the vrykul’s return from hibernation.

By the time the vrykul are fully awake, the Scourge infrastructure is already in place.

This is the same strategy the Lich King uses across Northrend. In Borean Tundra, Prince Valanar infiltrated Alliance forces at Valiance Keep by disguising himself as a human officer. In Dragonblight, the Scourge embedded agents among the vrykul at Voldrune. The pattern is always infiltration before domination.

What makes Gjalerbron especially valuable to Arthas is the sheer number of Dormant Vrykul still sleeping in the Waking Halls below. The regular necrolords’ aggro quotes reveal their mindset: “Excellent, another sacrificial lamb,” “More ingredients to fuel our rituals here,” and “There’s always room for one more.” They view every living being who enters Gjalerbron as raw material. The vrykul being awakened above are soldiers. The adventurers who come to stop them are fuel.

Mezhen’s Writings, found on his corpse, expose the full scope: Queen Angerboda herself is attempting to awaken King Ymiron in a chamber called the Winter’s Terrace. The Writings note that she is having difficulty with the ritual.

This is the intelligence that propels the next quest, The Slumbering King, and ultimately leads to one of the most dramatic moments in Howling Fjord: the Lich King himself appearing to claim Ymiron when your intervention disrupts Angerboda’s plans.

Easter Egg: “Necro Overlord Metzen”

Mezhen’s name is widely recognized as a reference to Chris Metzen, Blizzard’s former Senior Vice President of Story and Franchise Development and the creative force behind much of the Warcraft universe.

“Mezhen” is a light reshuffling of “Metzen.” The joke of naming a necromancer overlord after Warcraft’s chief storyteller has a certain self-aware humor to it: Metzen was, in a sense, the overlord orchestrating all of these events from behind the scenes. He was also known by the alias “Thundergod” and returned to Blizzard in 2023 as Creative Advisor for the Warcraft franchise, overseeing the current Worldsoul Saga that includes The War Within, Midnight, and The Last Titan.

This is not Metzen’s only in-game reference. Avenger Metz of the Argent Dawn bears a resemblance to Metzen’s avatar on the Sons of the Storm art site, and a draenei shaman named Shem Reznict in the WoW Trading Card Game is a direct anagram of “Chris Metzen.”
