Story Context
Father Levariol explicitly frames this as a holy mission. Where the previous quest (Of Keys and Cages) was about mercy for prisoners, this one is about purification:
“Your service has been exemplary, <name>, but there is something that is troubling me: the Scourge. The Light cannot abide their presence, and neither shall we.”
His language grows more militant here. Levariol is a priest, not a soldier, but the Scourge presence at Gjalerbron offends him on a theological level: “Purification is the key to salvation, my child. Make us proud!”
He also adds a progress check line that hints at his high expectations: “The Holy Light moves through all your actions and in all things. No creature, no place, no matter how wicked, can escape its wrath!”
Upon completion, Levariol performs a quiet benediction. The moment is personal and intimate compared to Captain Adams’ bluster: “<The priest quietly mouths a benediction for you.> Bless you, <name>, you have answered my prayers. Stand proudly in the Light, chin held high with the knowledge that your actions were most holy!”
He then notes the reward comes from “the church’s coffers,” not the military treasury. This small detail reinforces that Levariol operates on a different authority than Adams. The Alliance military may not prioritize the Scourge undead at Gjalerbron, but the Church of the Holy Light considers their eradication a sacred duty.
Bestiary: What You’re Actually Fighting
The three target types represent different tiers of the Scourge war machine:
Together, these three types reveal that Gjalerbron is not just a vrykul site. The Scourge has embedded a full military infrastructure here: aerial sentinels overhead, plague creatures guarding the underground ritual chambers, and undead foot soldiers patrolling the platforms.
The vrykul think they are partners with the Lich King. The Scourge presence suggests they are more like subjects being managed.
Cross-Expansion Connection: The Scourge Occupation Pattern
The Scourge infrastructure at Gjalerbron follows the same template you will see repeated across Northrend. Gargoyle sentinels, plague creatures in tunnels, undead patrols on the surface. The same arrangement appears at Naxxramas floating over Wintergarde Keep, at the Fleshwerks in Icecrown, and within the tunnels of Azjol-Nerub.
This is how the Scourge operates: they do not simply conquer, they embed.
At Gjalerbron, they arrived under the guise of helping the vrykul awaken their slumbering kin, but they brought their own forces, installed their own guards, and positioned their own creatures in every critical area.
By the time the vrykul might realize the Lich King’s “partnership” looks more like an occupation, it is too late to resist.
After the war against the Jailer in Shadowlands, Muradin Bronzebeard reported that Gjalerbron remains half-filled with slumbering vrykul, with the remaining necrolords still coaxing them awake.
The air still reeks of foul magic and frost wyrm death stench. The Scourge infrastructure you are clearing here was never fully dismantled.

Vikstone's War Journal“Your service has been exemplary,” Father Levariol began, “but there is something that is troubling me: the Scourge.”

His voice hardened.
“The Light cannot abide their presence, and neither shall we. I hope that it is not asking you too much, but I would have you return north to Gjalerbron and crush the unholy Scourge in that vile lair! Be sure to check for them in the Waking Halls beneath Gjalerbron as well. Purification is the key to salvation, my child. Make us proud!”
The Scourge had infested Gjalerbron. The vrykul’s “awakening” rituals had drawn them, or perhaps created them. Either way, the walking dead wandered the grounds, and more sinister things lurked below.
The Deathless Watchers patrolled the upper reaches and moved with an endless drive to kill. Each key came from a vrykul corpse and each lock turned with the same cold click.
Fearsome Horrors crawled from the shadows in the Waking Halls, and four of them came at me in the dark, claws raking stone when they missed flesh.
Deeper still, the Putrid Wights waited, placed to guard the deepest chambers.
When I returned, Father Levariol quietly mouthed a benediction.
“Bless you. You have answered my prayers. Stand proudly in the Light, chin held high with the knowledge that your actions were most holy!”
Malister was whispering from across the room about the Gjalerbron reports and what the necrolords were waking underneath that fortress one ritual at a time, because there are Sleeping Giants down there.
