This huge scroll is made from dragon skin. Unfurling its more-than-ten-foot length, you can see that the images painted upon its scaly surface depict a mysterious vrykul ritual. A vrykul thane, surrounded by angelic-looking beings, ascends into the heavens. A mysterious, darkened figure looms large in the picture’s background.
A tingling in your gut tells you that the thane of Skorn is about to do this. You must stop it! A large pyre sits at the top of Skorn in front of the thane’s lodge.
Present the Vrykul Scroll of Ascension near the Thane’s Pyre to call him out and slay him. Afterward, due to the nature of the ritual, you’re sure that Father Levariol at Westguard Keep will be interested in seeing the scroll.

You will be able to choose one of these rewards:

Story Context
This quest begins the moment you read the scroll:
“This huge scroll is made from dragon skin. Unfurling its more-than-ten-foot length, you can see that the images painted upon its scaly surface depict a mysterious vrykul ritual.”
The imagery is vivid and disturbing: “A vrykul thane, surrounded by angelic-looking beings, ascends into the heavens. A mysterious, darkened figure looms large in the picture’s background.”
Your gut tells you this ritual is imminent: “A tingling in your gut tells you that the thane of Skorn is about to do this. You must stop it!”
After you kill Halfdan, the Val’kyr themselves pass judgment. A Val’kyr Observer appears and declares:
“How unfortunate, Halfdan.”
“We find you unworthy of ascension, Halfdan. Let your soul know oblivion!”
Father Levariol’s analysis at turn-in is chillingly prescient:
“Yes, my <son/daughter>, that is ominous-looking, and you obviously had the right of it. Thank you for bringing this scroll to me. I am very keen to study its implications.”
“If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that these vrykul have a way to transcend death; at least those that are worthy. By defeating the Winterskorn thane, you proved him unworthy. The Light only knows what he would have become, and what terror he might have rained down upon us, had you not slain him.”
Lore Note: The Ascension System Revealed
This quest is one of the most lore-significant moments in Howling Fjord because it shows the player, and the Alliance, the vrykul ascension mechanism for the first time.
The scroll depicts three key elements: a vrykul warrior ascending, angelic beings facilitating the process, and a dark figure presiding over it. Father Levariol correctly identifies the first piece, the vrykul can transcend death. But he doesn’t yet understand the full picture.
Those “angelic beings” are Val’kyr, and the “darkened figure” is the Lich King. The Val’kyr Observer’s appearance after Halfdan’s death confirms the system is real and active. Her judgment — “We find you unworthy” — reveals that ascension isn’t automatic. The Val’kyr evaluate each vrykul who dies in battle.
Worthy warriors become Ymirjar, the Lich King’s elite undead shock troops. The unworthy are condemned to oblivion, or worse, become Vargul, mindless undead husks.
By defeating Halfdan in single combat, you literally proved him unworthy in the Val’kyr’s eyes. You denied the Lich King one of his potential champions.
Cross-Expansion Connection: The Full Val’kyr Arc
This quest is where the Val’kyr story begins for most players. Their brief appearance here, two lines of dialogue, launches a narrative thread that spans the rest of the game:
In Storm Peaks, you visit Valkyrion, where vrykul women undergo transformation into nascent Val’kyr. In Icecrown, the Ymirjar at Jotunheim show what successful ascension looks like, elite warriors serving as the Lich King’s personal army.
In Legion, the entire Stormheim zone explores the original Val’kyr, created by Odyn and his adopted daughter Helya long before the Lich King co-opted the design. The Halls of Valor represents the original version of what the Lich King corrupted, a place where worthy warriors are elevated, not as undead thralls, but as the Valarjar, champions of Odyn.
That Val’kyr Observer at Halfdan’s pyre, speaking just two sentences before vanishing? She’s the first visible thread of one of Warcraft’s deepest mythological systems.

Vikstone's War JournalThe scroll was made from dragon skin. I found it on one of the casters, and when I unfurled its more-than-ten-foot length, the images painted on the scaly surface made my gut tighten.

A vrykul thane, surrounded by angelic beings, ascending into the heavens. A darkened figure was looming in the background. It was a ritual. An ascension?
The pyre at the top of Skorn, the thane’s lodge. Whatever this ritual was, it hadn’t happened yet.
I approached the pyre with the scroll held high.
“You think I do not know what you are trying to do?” The voice boomed across the ruins. Halfdan the Ice-Hearted emerged from his lodge, axe in hand, frost crept along its edge. “You think I haven’t been watching you? You will not stop my ascension, tiny elf. Time to die!”
He came at me, and the first swing would have taken my head if I hadn’t been moving. The second caught my shield and numbed my arm to the shoulder. I drove my mace into his knee, and I spun its spikes hard against his skull.
Halfdan fell at the base of his own pyre.
Then the air shimmered, and two figures descended, pale and winged.
“How unfortunate, Halfdan,” one spoke.
“We find you unworthy of ascension, Halfdan,” the other pronounced. “Let your soul know oblivion.”
They vanished. The thane’s body remained, very much dead, very much not ascending.
Father Levariol studied the scroll when I returned to Westguard.
“Yes, my son, that is ominous-looking, and you obviously had the right of it. Thank you for bringing this scroll to me. I am very keen to study its implications.” He traced the painted figures with one finger. “If I were to hazard a guess, I would say that these vrykul have a way to transcend death. At least those that are worthy. By defeating the Winterskorn thane, you proved him unworthy. The Light only knows what he would have become, and what terror he might have rained down upon us, had you not slain him.”
Unworthy. Those winged beings had judged Halfdan in death and found him wanting because I’d killed him. Whatever dark bargain the vrykul had struck, failure in battle meant oblivion instead of ascension.
Good to know.
Levariol said the vrykul had found a way past death, troubled most by the angelic figures in the painting, and the answers were north at Gjalerbron where the same rituals were running on a scale that made Halfdan’s pyre look like a campfire, which starts with Of Keys and Cages.
