“Vikstone, I don’t trust anyone but you to take care of this. I need the proto-drake eggs and proto-whelps in the burning forest to the southeast destroyed!
Since we arrived here, the Ember Clutch has been ablaze; there must be some sort of perverse magic at work. And lately it seems to be growing. My men tell me that if we don’t do something quickly, we’ll be surrounded on all sides by the fire within a few weeks’ time!
Get down there and eliminate the threat by destroying those eggs and the proto-whelps.”
-Captain Adams
Destroy 15 Proto-Drake Eggs and 15 Proto-Whelps, and then return to Captain Adams at Westguard Keep.
![Finding Proto-Whelps: Proto-Whelps spawn when Proto-Drakes breathe fire on the ground. Keep an eye on the drakes circling above and watch for their fire breath to locate Whelp spawn points. Alternatively, some Whelps will emerge from destroying Proto-Whelp Eggs, but not all eggs guarantee a spawn. Efficient Strategy: Follow the Drakes: Pan your camera upward and track where the drakes are breathing fire. Head to those locations for newly spawned Whelps. Destroy Eggs: Eggs are located near [39, 50]. Target them for a chance to spawn Whelps, though results can be inconsistent.](https://gamertribute.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/To-The-Clutches-of-Evil-Map.png)

Quick Facts
Walkthrough
Finding Proto-Whelps
Proto-Whelps spawn through two mechanics:
Egg Hatching: Destroying Proto-Drake Eggs will often spawn a Proto-Whelp. Not every egg guarantees a spawn, but most will produce one. When an egg cracks, step back slightly before attacking. The whelp needs a moment to fully emerge from the shell. Attacking too early results in “Out of Range” errors even when standing right on top of it.
Fire Pools: Pan your camera upward and watch the Proto-Drakes circling overhead. When they breathe fire on the ground, Proto-Whelps spawn in those fire pools. If you’re having trouble finding enough whelps, follow the drakes and head to fresh fire locations.
Tips
Hidden Mechanic: Player Conflict
Players further along this chain must kill Proto-Drakes directly (see “Two Wrongs…” below). When drakes die, they stop breathing fire, which disrupts the whelp spawn cycle for anyone working on this quest. If whelps seem unusually scarce, another player may be clearing drakes overhead. Focus on eggs during these windows.
Weapon Skill Training Opportunity
Proto-Drake Eggs are perfect for leveling neglected weapon skills. They don’t fight back and take multiple hits to destroy. You can quickly raise unarmed skill by about 20 minutes by punching eggs. Not efficient for quest completion, but if you’ve been meaning to level up that dusty polearm skill, this is your chance.
Story Context
Captain Adams explains the urgency:
“Since we arrived here, the Ember Clutch has been ablaze; there must be some sort of perverse magic at work. And lately it seems to be growing. My men tell me that if we don’t do something quickly, we’ll be surrounded on all sides by the fire within a few weeks’ time!”
The magical fire spreading from Ember Clutch threatens Westguard Keep. Adams’ solution: destroy the eggs and whelps to drive off the proto-drakes and stop the fire from expanding.
Upon completion, Adams is relieved, but something’s wrong:
“Good work! With any luck at all, the destruction of their egg clutches and whelps should drive off those fiery beasts and prevent that magical blaze from spreading. Wait… what’s that sound? It sounds like the beating of wings.”
Your actions have consequences. The proto-drakes are angry.
Lore: Ember Clutch and the Proto-Dragons
Ember Clutch was once the sacred breeding ground of a proto-dragon broodmother, an ancient nesting site long before vrykul arrived. The Ember Clutch Ancient, one of the treant guardians who still watches over this scorched forest, reveals that the vrykul and their leader Skeld Drakeson are the true cause of the fire’s expansion. They’ve captured and enslaved proto-drakes for use as war mounts.
Proto-dragons are the primal ancestors of the dragons you know from Azeroth — Alexstrasza, Ysera, Nozdormu, Malygos, and Neltharion were all proto-dragons before the titans elevated them to become the Dragon Aspects.
Unlike their descendants, proto-dragons lack the intelligence and wisdom of true dragons, though some exceptions existed (like those who fought alongside Tyr against Galakrond). They’re described as “ruthless predators that cannot be reasoned with,” which explains why Adams sees destruction as the only option.
The Ancient offers a different perspective with the quest Root Causes:
“All things in nature seek a balance. It is only through the interference of those not in tune with that harmony that the balance is shifted. You waste your efforts when you kill the whelps and drakes.”
The “real culprits,” according to the Ancient, are Skeld Drakeson and his Dragonflayer Handlers at the southern edge of Ember Clutch [42, 53]. This neutral quest is available to both factions and allows you to address the root problem rather than the symptoms.
Quest Chain Overview
This quest begins a short moral storyline:
Malister is morally conflicted about the follow-up. His quest text reveals his discomfort:
“It is unfortunate that the captain had to have you go rile up the proto-drakes. Though they seem to lack the intelligence of some of the dragons we know, they still seem to be noble creatures.”
The quest title “Two Wrongs…” references the proverb “two wrongs don’t make a right.” Adams’ aggressive approach provoked the proto-drakes, and now Malister must ask you to compound the problem by killing them. The game gives you a small moral question to consider — was there a better way? (The Ancient thinks so.)
Cross-Expansion Connection: Proto-Dragons in Dragonflight
Proto-dragons return prominently in the Dragonflight expansion (2022), where they’re called “primal dragons.” The Primalists are a faction of proto-dragons who rejected the titans’ gift and view the ordered dragonflights as corrupted. Your first encounter with proto-dragon lore in Ember Clutch plants seeds for the major expansion conflict over a decade later.
Additionally, this quest area’s themes of vrykul enslaving proto-drakes foreshadow the Hyldnir vrykul in Storm Peaks, who create undead proto-drake mounts by bathing eggs in plague at Valkyrion. The vrykul-proto-drake relationship appears repeatedly throughout Northrend.

Vikstone's War JournalCaptain Adams met me on the upper floor of Westguard Keep.

“I don’t trust anyone but you to take care of this. I need the proto-drake eggs and proto-whelps in the burning forest to the southeast destroyed! Since we arrived here, the Ember Clutch has been ablaze. There must be some sort of perverse magic at work. And lately it seems to be growing. My men tell me that if we don’t do something quickly, we’ll be surrounded on all sides by the fire within a few weeks’ time!”
The Ember Clutch. The trees burned but didn’t fall, flames licking at branches that should have been ash days ago. The proto-drakes had made their nests in the heart of it, either immune to the heat or drawn to it.
The eggs cracked easily enough under my boot. The whelps came at me in groups, quick and vicious, but they were young and their attacks were predictable. I worked methodically through the burning forest, smoke stinging my eyes, heat pressing against my armor.
“Good work!” Adams said when I returned. “With any luck at all, the destruction of their egg clutches and whelps should drive off those fiery beasts and prevent that magical blaze from spreading.”
He paused, head tilting.
“Wait… what’s that sound?” His hand moved to his sword. “It sounds like the beating of wings.”
The proto-drakes were coming back angry, and the man standing on the wall looking least happy about what he had been ordered to do was Mage-Lieutenant Malister.
