Vikstone's War JournalThe Ember Clutch Ancient spoke, his voice soft through burning branches.

“All things in nature seek a balance. It is only through the interference of those not in tune with that harmony that the balance is shifted.”
This grove, it told me, had been the breeding ground of the proto-dragon broodmother since before the vrykul first walked these lands. Sacred ground, now perverted.
“You waste your efforts when you kill the whelps and drakes. The real culprits behind the expansion of these magically burning woods are the newly awakened vrykul and their master, Skeld Drakeson.”
The proto-drakes had been defending their home, and we had been killing them for it.
“If it’s blood on your hands that you seek, start with them. You will find their lair on the south side of the Ember Clutch.”
The Dragonflayer Handlers worked among the trees, keeping the proto-drakes agitated, driving them toward Westguard. Five of them fell before I reached Skeld’s position. None of them expected a night elf in their midst.
Skeld Drakeson fought like he had nothing to lose, each blow heavy enough to crack stone, and his rage outpaced common sense.
The Ancient’s voice found me again as I returned.
“Unfortunate that one predator must be used to put down another, but that is the natural order of things. Perhaps now the proto-drakes and their whelps can go back to living peacefully.”
A pause, leaves rustling without wind.
“Somehow I doubt it with the reawakening of the vrykul.”
Balance, once broken, doesn’t simply restore itself. Someone has to fight for it.
Steel Gate had sent word that the breeding program was in trouble, with a commander insisting that Everything Must Be Ready before the next eggs hatch.
