“When the expeditionary force moves north, Captain Adams expects everything to be ready at Fort Wildervar. The scouts and craftsmen there have been tasked with preparing the gear and rations for our men for the climb into the hills. The captain’s famous for his temper, so I want to send someone ahead to check on the preparations. Vikstone's War JournalQuartermaster Brevin caught me outside the keep.

“When the expeditionary force moves north, Captain Adams expects everything to be ready at Fort Wildervar. The scouts and craftsmen there have been tasked with preparing the gear and rations for our men for the climb into the hills.”
He lowered his voice.
“The captain’s famous for his temper, so I want to send someone ahead to check on the preparations. Fort Wildervar is far to the northeast, beyond Skorn, up in the snow-covered areas near the border with Grizzly Hills. Find Gil Grisert there and make sure he is prepared.”
Famous for his temper, Brevin had a gift for understatement.
The journey took me through the ruins of Skorn, past the towers I’d helped destroy, past the vrykul bodies still cooling on the ground. Beyond the fortress, the terrain rose toward the hills, snow thickening as the path climbed. Fort Wildervar sat at the edge of wilder country, a supply depot bracing for winter and war.
Gil Grisert looked up when I arrived.
“So the quartermaster sent you?”
He gestured at the half-loaded wagons, the crates, the men working with a deadline approaching.
“To be honest, we’re running a bit behind here and we’re going to need some help making our goals.”
He shuddered visibly.
“None of the men want to brave the wrath of Captain Adams.”
Grisert’s fear was entirely reasonable.
“What do you need?”
Gil rattled off everything wrong with the fort, and the urgent item was the supply wires the wildlife had chewed through, without which the whole operation stops before Adams arrives to notice, so they are Down to the Wire.
