Rallying the Troops

Quest 3 of 8 in the Kurun Chain
Alliance • Grizzly Hills • Level 75 • Boulder Hills
Rally 5 Grizzly Hills Giants with the Shard of the Earth at Boulder Hills [68, 11] and kill 5 Iron Rune Avengers.
Target a friendly giant in melee combat and use the Shard from inventory. It heals them to full and buffs their strength. An Iron Rune Avenger (non-elite) spawns from a drill after each rally. Kill it. Pick giants at 30%+ HP or you risk the friendly dying mid-fight, leaving you facing an elite Runed Giant. Safe spot: Stand near the boulder-throwing giants in the rear. Buff fresh giants as they run past toward the front line.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Stone giants fought their own runed brothers in the Boulder Hills, and Kurun's shard could heal them but couldn't end the war. The iron dwarves had turned his kin against him.

“The sons of iron have used their runes to enthrall many of my brothers and are using them to break the siege on Thor Modan. I wish we did not have to fight them, but we have no choice. My giants will not hold out long against them. I have imbued this earthen shard with a blessing that will aid our allies. Take it with you to the battle in the Boulder Hills to the north, and use it to reassure and fortify my brethren.

Kill any iron dwarves who would stand in your way.”

Objective: Use the Shard of the Earth to rally 5 Grizzly Hills Giants, kill 5 Iron Rune Avengers, then return to Kurun.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Getting to the Battle

  • Head north from Kurun’s hilltop position to the Boulder Hills around [68, 11]. You’ll see a large-scale battle between friendly Grizzly Hills Giants and hostile Runed Giants (level 74-75 elites).
  • Behind the melee line, a row of friendly giants throws boulders. The giants you need are the ones running forward into melee combat, not the throwers.

Using the Shard

  • Target a Grizzly Hills Giant that is currently engaged in melee combat with a Runed Giant, then use the Shard of the Earth from your inventory.
  • The shard heals the giant to full health, increases its size, and buffs its strength.
  • Immediately after you rally a giant, a drill bursts from the ground nearby and an Iron Rune Avenger (level 74-75, non-elite) spawns. Kill it.
  • Repeat 5 times.

Staying Alive

  • Pick healthy giants. If the friendly giant dies mid-fight, the Runed Giant turns on you. Runed Giants are elites with Dark Rune, a DoT that hits for around 3k every 2 seconds. That will flatten most solo players.
  • Target giants at 30%+ health, or better yet, catch fresh giants as they spawn and run toward the front line. You can buff them before they even engage, keeping you safely away from the hostile elites.
  • Pull the Avenger away from the fighting giants before engaging. If you’re standing between two battling elites when the friendly one drops, you’re in trouble.
  • The graveyard is far. Dying here means a long corpse run, so play it safe.

Efficiency Tips

  • Safe spot strategy: Stand near the line of boulder-throwing giants in the rear. New melee giants spawn and run past this position. Buff them as they pass, kill the Avenger that spawns at your safe distance, and repeat. You avoid the dangerous front line entirely.
  • Pet class tip: Send your pet on the Iron Rune Avenger while you help burn down the Runed Giant. When the Runed Giant dies, new Grizzly Hills Giants run in to fill the gap, giving you another target without moving.
  • Pairs with Raining Down Destruction if picked up simultaneously, though that quest involves throwing boulders from Kurun’s position rather than ground-level combat.

Lore Context

The iron dwarves of the Iron Rune clan have used runic magic to enthrall Kurun’s stone giant brethren, turning them into the Runed Giants fighting against their own kind. This quest is your first direct intervention in a conflict that has raged for thousands of years, with stone giants besieging Thor Modan to prevent the iron dwarves from rebuilding their ancient capital.

The Iron Rune Avengers shout “For the glory of Loken!” when they attack. This is an early breadcrumb connecting the iron dwarves to the corrupted Titan Keeper who serves as the final boss of Halls of Lightning and whose death triggers Algalon the Observer’s arrival at Ulduar.

The chain continues through Gavrock and eventually reveals how the iron dwarves use Runes of Compulsion to enslave the stone giants, culminating in “Free at Last” where you break the enchantment entirely.

Kurun held out an earthen shard. “The sons of iron have used their runes to enthrall many of my brothers. They use them now to break our siege. I wish we did not have to fight our own kin, but we have no choice.”

His free giants were losing.

“This shard carries a blessing,” he continued. “Use it to fortify my brethren. Give them the strength to fight on.”

The Boulder Hills was chaos. Kurun’s giants clashed with their runed brothers, stone fists crashing against stone flesh. The friendly giants were being driven back, their wounds slowing them.

I went through them with the shard raised high. Where its light touched, wounds closed. Giants grew in size and strength, their roars renewed. Iron dwarves rushed to stop me, and my axe answered each one.

When I returned to the ridge, Kurun nodded.

“You have given our allies the strength to fight on. Even so, we must plan a way to end this battle before we are overrun.”

The war for Thor Modan was far from won.

The giants are rallied, but boulders and reinforcements won’t break the siege alone. Someone small enough to fit inside the tunnels needs to cut the head off the iron dwarf command in Into the Breach.
