“No no no! Those ice shards didn’t work at all! They’ll melt before they even do any damage. That’s the last time I’ll trust Narf’s word on materials. This means we need something else entirely for the shrapnel. I know! I’m brilliant. Bone splinters. There are some bones all around here that the jormungar have been gnawing on pretty thoroughly.
Go check them out and see if you can find me some splintered bone that I can use.”

Lore Note
The dragon skeletons you’re scavenging from are ancient remains in the Dragon Wastes, where dragons have traditionally come to die.
Galakrond, the massive proto-dragon whose skeleton dominates this region, is the progenitor of all dragonkind. The jormungar worms gnawing on these bones are feeding on the residual magical energy, which is why Zivlix thinks the splintered fragments will make effective shrapnel.

Vikstone's War Journal“No no no!” Zivlix was practically vibrating with frustration. “Those ice shards didn’t work at all! They’ll melt before they even do any damage. That’s the last time I’ll trust Narf’s word on materials.”

He paced, muttering, then stopped. His eyes lit up.
“I know! I’m brilliant. Bone splinters.” He gestured east. “There are some bones all around here that the jormungar have been gnawing on pretty thoroughly. Go check them out and see if you can find me some splintered bone that I can use.”
The jormungar had been busy, gnawing the bones into jagged fragments. I gathered the sharpest pieces, the ones that would hold an edge even when packed into explosives.
Zivlix handled the bone splinters more carefully than anything I’d seen him touch.
“Excellent! That should be the last thing I need to test out the new bombs.” His hands were assembling components. “Just a moment and I’ll try this out!”
The machine lurched into the air, wobbling but flying. Zivlix watched it go with naked pride.
“The control components are working perfectly this time! Who to test the bomb on? The Harpies? Ha ha… wait… what’s that?”
The Mistress of the Coldwind’s strike took the machine apart in midair. Debris rained across the wastes.
“You are not welcome in our home!” The screech came from Coldwind Heights. “Leave and go find some other land to pillage!”
Zivlix stood frozen, watching the smoking wreckage. Then his face twisted.
“NO! My machine… my bombs! THAT’S IT!” He rounded on me. “Those harpies are going DOWN! Talk to Narf. Let’s take care of those bird-brains once and for all.”
From triumph to catastrophe in under a minute.
Zivlix’s machine wobbled into the air above Nozzlerust Post, and for one proud moment, goblin engineering actually worked. The Mistress of the Coldwind had a different opinion, and now Narf has a plan in Hard to Swallow.
