Lore Context
Private Brau finally reveals why he deserted, and why “S” stands for suicide:
“No offense, but the operation they put Thassarian in charge of was pure suicide. A handful of our men were to launch an attack on the biggest Scourge presence in the area. Call me crazy, but storming a Scourge ziggurat outside a plagued Nerubian city with a dozen men ain’t my idea of fun.”
Unit S was a suicide squad, sent to assault Scourge fortifications in Dragonblight with barely enough soldiers to fill a single squad. Brau’s desertion wasn’t cowardice — it was survival instinct. The question remains: who ordered this mission, and why?
Brau offers one final lead: “If you’re still interested in finding Thassarian, we were supposed to arrange for passage east with a tuskarr by the name of Ataika in Kaskala to the northeast. Good luck with your fool’s errand.”
Upon meeting you, Ataika recognizes something troubling: “I remember the man you speak of. He bore the marks of Karkut. May Karkut protect our fallen.”
The Mark of Karkut
Karkut is the tuskarr god of death: “he who watches over the dead.” The tuskarr believe Karkut gathers the spirits of the fallen and guides them to the afterlife.
That Ataika sees Karkut’s mark on Thassarian is significant: the tuskarr recognize death knights as beings touched by their death god. To Ataika, Thassarian isn’t just a soldier; he’s someone who has crossed between life and death, bearing the mark of the deity who shepherds tuskarr souls.

A handful of men sent to attack the biggest Scourge presence in the area.” He let out a short, bitter laugh. “Call me crazy, but storming a Scourge ziggurat outside a plagued Nerubian city with a dozen men ain’t my idea of fun.”
A dozen men against a ziggurat meant someone had wanted them dead.
“If you’re still interested in finding him, we were supposed to arrange passage east with a tuskarr named Ataika. Kaskala, northeast of here.” He shrugged. “Good luck with your fool’s errand.”
I found Ataika at the edge of a village under siege. When I mentioned Thassarian, the tuskarr went quiet.
“I remember the man you speak of. He bore the marks of Karkut. May Karkut protect our fallen.”

Thassarian had been marked before he ever reached the ziggurat.
Ataika remembered Thassarian and remembered where the boat had taken him, and she remembered sending her own boy along with them, which turns the next errand into The Son of Karkut.
