After the Argent Vanguard siege, Tirion tells you the Valley of Echoes has been reclaimed and the Nerubian web walls blocking the Breach have been torn down. He sends you northwest to report to The Ebon Watcher, who is camped at a tent just outside the Breach at [83, 73].
Fly or ride northwest from the Vanguard. Speak with The Ebon Watcher to complete the quest. No combat required.
Death Knight Players: You receive the same quest under ID 13105, given by Highlord Darion Mograine instead of Tirion. The turn-in and objective are identical, but Mograine’s flavor text addresses you as a fellow knight of the Ebon Blade and references Koltira and Thassarian’s positions aboard the faction gunships.

The Ebon Watcher’s Identity
The Ebon Watcher is actually Highlord Darion Mograine, leader of the Knights of the Ebon Blade, operating under a disguise in Icecrown. His identity is not explicitly revealed during this quest, but several clues point to it: his completion text references the Battle for Light’s Hope Chapel (where Darion broke free of the Lich King’s control), and his greeting/farewell quotes match Darion’s voice lines exactly.
The game confirms the connection later in the chain. After Crusaders’ Pinnacle is established, the Ebon Watcher disappears and Darion Mograine appears undisguised during The Air Stands Still (summoned to fight Underking Talonox in Scourgeholme) and again in Tirion’s Gambit at the Cathedral of Darkness.
If you’re a Death Knight, the Ebon Watcher has unique dialogue recognizing you as a fellow former servant of the Lich King.
Tension Between Crusade and Ebon Blade
A scripted conversation between Tirion Fordring and the Ebon Watcher plays at the Argent Vanguard, revealing a philosophical rift between the two leaders.
The Watcher criticizes Tirion’s honor-bound approach, arguing that the Light’s constraints have allowed the Lich King to seal the Breach and use captured Crusaders as shields. Tirion insists on fighting with honor, to which the Watcher replies bluntly: “Then you have lost, Highlord.”
This tension between pragmatism and idealism runs through the entire Icecrown campaign and ultimately comes to a head in the Crusaders’ Pinnacle and Icecrown Citadel storylines.
The Scourgeholme Branch
Turning in this quest opens the major Scourgeholme assault, which splits into five parallel quest branches: The Scourgestone, The Purging Of Scourgeholme, The Restless Dead, and others. All of these eventually converge on Into The Frozen Heart Of Northrend and the climactic Battle For Crusaders’ Pinnacle.

I had heard about the Ebon Watcher before I saw him. A death knight advising the Argent Crusade on Scourge tactics, which is either the most sensible arrangement in Northrend or the worst, depending which crusader you ask.
I caught the end of them arguing on my way out.
“You are dealing with a being that holds within it the consciousness of the most cunning, intelligent, and ruthless individuals to ever live,” the Watcher said. “The Lich King is unlike any foe that you have ever faced, Highlord. Though you bested him upon the holy ground of Light’s Hope Chapel, you tread now upon his domain.”
Then, flat: “You cannot win. Not like this.”
“What would you have me do, Darion?”
“Nothing. There is nothing that you can do while the Light binds you. It controls you wholly, shackling you to the ground with its virtues.”
“Choose your words wisely, death knight. You stand amidst the company of the devoted.”
Mograine shook his head and did not take any of it back.
A priest told me on the Skybreaker that in my heart I knew justice was the only true path. Here was a man in black telling the most devout soul on this glacier that his virtues were a leash. I have no side to take. I only note that I have been dragging something behind me for a year and have never once been tempted to call it a virtue.
His tent stands outside the Breach, near enough that you can hear Scourgeholme working at night. Twin runeblades at his hips.
“My knowledge of Scourge tactics is without equal. Before the battle for Light’s Hope Chapel, my knights and I served under the Lich King. His icy grasp controlling our every action.”
Then, after a while: “The light of dawn changed everything…”
He did not finish that either. Nobody at this end of Icecrown finishes anything. Entari stopped in the middle of the shelling. Fordring stops when he says Arthas. Whatever is on the other side of that Breach, not one of them can get the whole of it out, and in the morning I go and look at it myself.
The Watcher’s advice was worth having and the Crusade’s own gunship was worth more, which is why Marshal Ivalius had been waiting at the Pinnacle with a standing offer nobody had taken up yet in The Skybreaker.
