Not-So-Honorable Combat

Quest 5 of 7 in the Valhalas Chain
Group Quest
Both Factions • Icecrown • Level 80 • Njorndar Village
Light the signal fire at Battlescar Spire and defeat Possessed Iskalder.
The spire is at 28.7, 52.0, an empty platform on the tallest peak southwest of Jotunheim with nothing hostile on it until you light the fire. Tagged for five, but plate wearers finish it alone and a tank with one other player has no trouble. Anything softer than plate will feel it. He is open to stuns, roots, and slows, so use them. Heroic Leap closes on you if you kite, so keep a movement ability held back rather than opening with it. Mages and druids should clear Ancient Curse instead of eating the casting penalty. Bring Fate Runes from the Bone Witch first.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
The banshee had told them in advance exactly how the fight would end, which left the hard part being to make a rigged defeat look expensive enough that a val'kyr would come down and inspect it. Vardmadra came down.

“Atop the tallest peak to the southwest overlooking Jotunheim is Battlescar Spire. It is a place of reverence for the vrykul, second only to Valhalas in terms of where they prefer to do honorable combat. We shall visit not-so-honorable combat upon it.

Gather your companions and fly to the spire. When you are ready, light the signal fire and I will appear within the body of Iskalder.

We will fight, you will win, and Vardmadra is sure to come to witness the battle!”

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: The Bone Witch — Cave at Njorndar Village, Icecrown [32.5, 42.9]

Objective: Fly to Battlescar Spire, light the Signal Fire to summon Iskalder (possessed by the Bone Witch), and defeat him.

Quick Facts

  • Type: Group (5) – but widely soloed (see below)
  • Location: Battlescar Spire [28.7, 52.0], a platform atop the tallest peak southwest of Jotunheim
  • Chain Position: Quest 5 of 7 in the Valhalas chain — Find the Ancient Hero → Not-So-Honorable Combat → Banshee’s Revenge

Walkthrough

Fly to Battlescar Spire

  • The spire is at [28.7, 52.0], the tallest peak southwest of Jotunheim, overlooking the region. It is a small exposed platform in the mountains with a Signal Fire in the center. There are no hostile mobs on the platform itself.

Light the Signal Fire

  • Interact with the Signal Fire to begin the event. After a brief delay (~5 seconds), Iskalder spawns, possessed by the Bone Witch (Lady Nightswood). She yells through him: “Now fight me, [name]! Kill Iskalder!” This is your cue. Use the delay to apply pre-fight buffs and HoTs.

Defeat Iskalder

Stat Value
Health ~50,000
Melee damage ~1,600-2,500 on plate; ~2,500-3,000+ on mail/leather/cloth
Immune to Fear, Death Coil horrify
Vulnerable to Stuns, roots, slows, Taunt

Ability Effect Counter
Cleave 110% weapon damage to target and nearest ally Don’t stack with pets or party members directly on top of each other
Heroic Leap Leaps to a distant target, deals weapon damage in 8-yard radius, brief stun on landing If kiting, expect him to close the gap periodically. Resume kiting immediately after the leap
Ancient Curse AoE curse on all nearby enemies: ~250 Shadow damage every 3 sec + reduces attack and casting speed by 15% for 30 sec Mages can Remove Curse. Druids can Remove Curse. Other classes just power through it. The casting speed reduction is the most annoying part for casters

Scripted Event After Defeat

  • When Iskalder falls, the val’kyr Vardmadra arrives to witness the battle. She is shocked that Iskalder lost. As she approaches to judge him, Lady Nightswood springs the trap and possesses Vardmadra’s body.
  • The turn-in is oddly casual about what just happened: “I’ve put Vardmadra aside for the moment. She’s someplace safe until we can enact our final revenge!”

Solo Strategy

Despite being tagged as a 5-player group quest, this fight is comfortably soloed by most level 80 classes and many level 78-79 characters. The 50k health pool and moderate damage output are well within solo reach. Here are the key approaches by role:

Melee/Tanks: The simplest approach. Engage directly, keep defensive cooldowns available, and burn him down. His Cleave and Ancient Curse are manageable with basic self-healing (Death Strike, Art of War procs, Victory Rush, etc.). Stuns work and buy you free damage windows. Most plate wearers can finish with 50-80% health remaining.

Ranged/Casters: Kite him around the platform. Frostbolt, Entangling Roots, Frost Nova, and similar abilities all work. Watch for Heroic Leap closing the gap. Blink or movement abilities are your answer. Mages should Remove Curse to avoid the 15% casting speed penalty. Shadow Priests can dot and run with Shield up, using Dispersion for breathing room.

Hunters: Send pet in with Mend Pet running continuously. Drop Frost Trap at your feet. Use Distracting Shot when pet health drops to pull Iskalder off the pet temporarily, letting it heal. He runs into your Frost Trap, gets slowed, and the pet re-taunts. Trivially easy with any spec.

Warlocks: He is immune to Fear and Death Coil horrify. Use your pet (Voidwalker or Felguard) as a tank. Keep Health Funnel on the pet while your DoTs tick. Curse of Exhaustion works for kiting if your pet dies.

Efficiency Tips

  • Pre-buff with Fate Runes. Pick up runes from the Bone Witch (Reading the Bones) before flying to the spire. Fate Rune of Unsurpassed Vigor (2% health on melee/ranged crit) and Fate Rune of Baneful Intent (+5% damage) stack with each other and significantly shorten the fight. The Fate Rune of Fleet Feet (+15% movement speed) is excellent for kiting classes.
  • Signal Fire interaction bug: Some report the Signal Fire becoming unclickable. If this happens, wait a few hours or until the next server reset.
  • Everything after this quest in the chain is also a 5-player group quest. If you are struggling to solo this, now is a good time to find a group for the remaining Valhalas chain.

Lore & Secrets

The “Not-So-Honorable” Plan

The Bone Witch’s scheme is elegantly devious. She possessed Iskalder’s body, used him to lure Vardmadra (a val’kyr with authority over Jotunheim’s vrykul trials) to Battlescar Spire to witness an “honorable combat,” and then springs the trap when Vardmadra arrives.

The fight itself is a sham: the Bone Witch is deliberately losing through Iskalder’s body, knowing that Vardmadra will come to investigate such a prestigious warrior’s defeat.

The quest name is a direct callback to the Bone Witch’s own words: Battlescar Spire is “a place of reverence for the vrykul, second only to Valhalas in terms of where they prefer to do honorable combat. We shall visit not-so-honorable combat upon it.”

Vardmadra’s capture here sets up the next quest, Banshee’s Revenge, which leads directly into the Battle at Valhalas group quest chain.

“Atop the tallest peak to the southwest overlooking Jotunheim is Battlescar Spire. It is a place of reverence for the vrykul, second only to Valhalas in terms of where they prefer to do honorable combat. We shall visit not-so-honorable combat upon it.” Then, in the same flat tone: “Gather your companions and fly to the spire. When you are ready, light the signal fire and I will appear within the body of Iskalder. We will fight, you will win, and Vardmadra is sure to come to witness the battle!”

We will fight. You will win. She was not boasting when she said it. She was handing me my part.

Mardagan flew up with me and the Ebon Blade knights came on behind. The paladin said almost nothing on the ride over, which is how he has been for a while now. This country takes it out of men in different directions.

I touched the torch to the signal fire and the flame climbed into the grey, and Iskalder came onto the spire with it. A day earlier I had walked that man out of his own tomb on a leash.

“Now fight me!” Iskalder’s voice went out across the peaks in a boom. “Kill Iskalder!”

He came at us and he came at us to lose. His axe came down with enough behind it to open the rock. I took it on the Titansteel Shield Wall and felt the whole of it arrive in my shoulder, then put the mace in low, spikes into the gap at the knee. He staggered. He did not fall, and he was not going to fall until she decided he had.

Mardagan came in from the far side and laid consecrated ground first, the way he always does, so the footing was already against Iskalder before the hammer got there. The Light took the vrykul across the arm and he turned into it snarling, which gave the knights their opening. They closed with runeblades out and circled him.

Iskalder swept the axe flat and drove them off. I set my feet, took it on the face of the shield, and punched the rim into his wrist. His grip went loose for about as long as it takes to notice, and a death knight put steel into him.

We wore him down. My shield took every stroke that would have killed a man, and Mardagan and the Ebon Blade cut at him from three sides, and all of it was theater staged on ground the vrykul hold sacred. The finest warrior of an older race, made to lose a fight he was not permitted to try to win.

When he went down, a shadow came off the sky.

“Iskalder, there you are. What is this? Engaged in battle already?” Vardmadra hung over the spire on spectral wings. “Very well. Finish these lesser beings and let us be about our business.”

Iskalder did not rise. Something dark came up out of him instead.

“I know not how this was possible, but you must still be judged, Iskalder,” Vardmadra said. “Wait… what is this?”

“This?” That was Lady Nightswood, out of the dark. “This is me taking control of you. This is me setting up my final revenge!”

“Stay away from me, creature!” Vardmadra’s voice came apart on it. “Do not touch me!”

Then the val’kyr laughed, and it was not the val’kyr laughing.

“Ahahahahahaha! It is done. Return to my cave. We have much to discuss!”

Mardagan watched her go up into the sky. The Ebon Blade knights put their blades away and offered nothing. In my experience death knights do not comment on one dead thing taking hold of another.

“I don’t like this,” Mardagan said.

I told him I had put the amulet on Iskalder myself. He had nothing to say to that either.

A val’kyr with Lady Nightswood behind her eyes is worth more than any hero the vrykul ever buried, and spending her is what makes Banshee’s Revenge possible at all.
