Reading the Bones

Quest 3 of 3 in the Savage Ledge Chain (Finale)

Collect 15 Vrykul Bones and bring them to the Bone Witch at Njorndar Village.

Every vrykul in Icecrown drops these, not just the ones at Jotunheim, and you do not need the quest in your log to loot them. Bank them while you work through Ymirheim, the Valley of Fallen Heroes, and the Jotunheim dailies rather than farming a stack on purpose. The cave is at 32.5, 42.9 and takes 15 at a time. Repeats pay 10 reputation, so come for the runes and not the standing. Damage dealers want Baneful Intent, tanks want Nigh Invincibility, and Fleet Feet earns its slot on anything that spends the day crossing the zone.

Location: 32.5, 42.9, near Njorndar Village in Icecrown.
Quest Objective:
Turn in Vrykul Bones collected from Vrykul enemies in the area to The Bone Witch.
Receive Fate Runes as a reward, which provide temporary buffs. — **Quest Giver:** The Bone Witch — Cave at Njorndar Village, Jotunheim, Icecrown [32.5, 42.9]
**Quest Objective:** Kill vrykul anywhere in Jotunheim and loot Vrykul Bones. They drop at a very high rate. You do not need the quest active to loot bones, so you can stockpile them while doing other Jotunheim quests

Quest Giver: The Bone Witch — Cave at Njorndar Village, Jotunheim, Icecrown [32.5, 42.9]

Objective: Collect 15 Vrykul Bones from vrykul in Jotunheim and turn them in to the Bone Witch. Choose a Fate Rune as your reward.

Repeatable: Yes, infinitely. After the first completion, the quest becomes repeatable for 10 rep and one Fate Rune per 15 bones.
Prerequisites: The Bone Witch (breadcrumb quest from The Leaper)

Walkthrough

Kill vrykul anywhere in Icecrown and loot Vrykul Bones. They drop from every vrykul in the zone, not only the ones at Jotunheim. The drop rate is high. You do not need the quest active to loot bones, so you can stockpile them while doing other Jotunheim quests.
Return to the Bone Witch’s cave at [32.5, 42.9] and turn in 15 bones. She casts them on a rug and tells you to “choose your fate.” Pick one of the five Fate Runes.

Fate Rune Options:

Fate Rune of Baneful Intent	+5% all damage dealt
Fate Rune of Nigh Invincibility	-5% all damage taken
Fate Rune of Fleet Feet	+15% movement speed
Fate Rune of Primal Energy	Regain 1% total mana on spell critical hit
Fate Rune of Unsurpassed Vigor	Heal 2% total health on melee/ranged critical hit

All Fate Runes are consumable items that grant a 30-minute buff. They may only be used within Icecrown. Different rune types stack with each other.

Efficiency Tips

Stockpile bones passively. You will be killing vrykul constantly while working through Jotunheim quests (Honor Challenge, Crush Dem Vrykuls!, Vandalizing Jotunheim, dailies). They can be invaluable if you want to solo any of the Rider elite quests. Collect bones as you go rather than farming them separately.
DPS pick Baneful Intent, tanks pick Nigh Invincibility, mobile classes pick Fleet Feet. Primal Energy and Unsurpassed Vigor are more situational but good for sustained grinding.
Not efficient for reputation farming. At 10 rep per repeat, you would need 300 turn-ins and 4,500 bones to go from Neutral to Friendly. Wearing the Knights of the Ebon Blade tabard in Heroic dungeons is vastly faster. The runes are the real value here, not the rep.

A woman who opens by telling you the reading is fixed. I have taken worse offers in this country from people who did me the courtesy of lying first.

Vrykul bones are not scarce anywhere in Icecrown. Fifteen is a morning if you go through Jotunheim the long way, and I went the long way.

“I find it remarkable that these beings ever held sway over the world when they utilized such primitive magic.” She said it in a voice she took off a vrykul, out of a body she took off a vrykul, sitting on a vrykul’s rug. “And now we shall see what the future holds for you.”

The Bone Witch cast the bones upon the rug in front of her.

“Choose your fate, warrior.”

Every man who has given me orders in this country has told me at some point that he was guessing. Thassarian said outright he had no way of knowing whether it would work. Here was a dead woman’s mouth offering to arrange the future instead, with the arrangement announced in advance and the price set at fifteen bones.

I chose.

The bones told Vikstone nothing the banshee had not already decided, but the vrykul themselves kept something further down, and reaching it means going Deep in the Bowels of The Underhalls.
