Iskalder, the Finest Vrykul
Iskalder is described by the Bone Witch as “the finest vrykul warrior ever to live.” The Scourge’s sleep-watchers discovered him slumbering in the Halls of the Ancestors, and the val’kyr Vardmadra was so alarmed by the discovery that she decided to come personally to judge him (as revealed in the previous quest, Through the Eye).
The Bone Witch’s plan is to use Iskalder as bait to lure Vardmadra into a trap, which plays out in the next few quests. The Bone Witch’s completion text: “He’s a fine specimen and will serve us well. Now, we have to make sure to use him properly to trap Vardmadra!”
Lady Nightswood views Iskalder as a tool, not a person to be rescued.

Vikstone's War Journal“Quickly, Vikstone, head southwest to the Halls of the Ancestors! Within you will find slumbering mjordin. Wake them until you find Iskalder. When you do, use this amulet upon him and bring him back to me. Now go. There is no time to waste!”

The Halls of the Ancestors are the mjordin’s Gjalerbron, and I have seen what Gjalerbron looks like once it has finished emptying. Statues of vrykul kings stand along the corridors with the runework still crisp on them. The sleepers are set into the walls, untouched.
There is no order to it, and nothing carved on the stone to tell you which one is which. You wake a man and find out who he is. If he is not the one, he comes off the wall with a weapon already in his hand, and you settle it, and you move down the row.
I did that for most of an afternoon. The first came awake before I had finished stepping back, and whatever he had gone to sleep holding onto left his face and was replaced with the plain business of a stranger standing in his tomb. Their steel still carried edge-magic out of whatever age they were laid down in, and it had kept.
He was further in. I knew him before the amulet did anything, and not from his bearing. His arms were cut to pieces from wrist to shoulder, and every mjordin I had put down that afternoon had gone into the wall with skin as clean as a boy’s. They were preserved. He had been used.
The amulet went warm. I set it against his chest and said what she had taught me to say.
He opened his eyes and looked at me and knew me. Then the amulet came down over the top of that and there was nothing behind his face at all.
He followed me out in silence. He was obedient the whole way, and he never once reached for the strength that had made him worth waking.
“He’s a fine specimen and will serve us well. Now, we have to make sure to use him properly to trap Vardmadra!”
The banshee had her bait, the val’kyr was already coming to inspect it, and everything Vikstone does from here is in service of Not-So-Honorable Combat.
