The Black Knight’s Fate

Quest 2 of 2 in the Black Knight's Return Chain (Finale)
Both Factions • Icecrown • Level 80 • Argent Pavilion
Kill Doctor Kohler at Deathspeaker's Watch and take his orders.
Fly due west and up the rise. The raised platform sits near the western end of the Watch, marked by a green bubble with the Black Knight inside it, and Kohler works the terrace around it. He is not elite, but the cultists around him will join in, so clear a little space before you engage rather than pulling him into the crowd. Loot the orders and leave. He respawns fast enough to catch anyone who stays to farm the zealots. There is nothing here to interrupt and nobody here to save.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Two aspirants had already been spent pouring the thing back into its own body, and their corpses were being tended by the men who had spent them. A crusader named Kul waited in a cage a few yards from the platform, and Vikstone took the doctor's paperwork and left him in it.

“You said the body was taken by cultists? I can only think of one place they would have gone, Deathspeaker’s Watch, the encampment on the rise west of the tournament grounds.

Whatever the cultists are doing must be stopped. The rumors I’ve heard can only be true, then. The infamous Doctor Kohler must be among the cultists, practicing his arts. Look for a rise or an altar overlooking the cultist camp, slay the doctor, and look for proof of his plans. Slow down his work in any other way you can.”

Walkthrough

Getting to Deathspeaker’s Watch

  • From the Argent Tournament Grounds, fly directly west. Deathspeaker’s Watch is a Scourge encampment on the rise overlooking the area.
  • Head toward the western end of the Watch. Look for a raised platform with a distinctive green bubble in its center at approximately [61, 23].

The Scene at the Platform

  • On the platform you will find the Black Knight sitting inside a green energy bubble, being channeled back to life by two Sacrificed Aspirants. Nearby, Kul the Reckless, a captured Crusader, is imprisoned in a black cage. Dark Zealots tend the corpses of the aspirants who are being spent on the channel, alongside Dark Ritualists.
  • Doctor Kohler patrols the semi-circular terrace around the platform.

Killing Doctor Kohler

  • Engage and kill Doctor Kohler. He is a non-elite mob. Clear nearby cultists first if you want a cleaner fight, as several may be in aggro range.
  • Loot Doctor Kohler’s Orders from his body.
  • Get out quickly after looting. Kohler respawns very fast (roughly 30 seconds per player reports). If you linger to farm cultists, he may catch you off guard.

Returning to Rhydalla

  • Fly back to the Argent Tournament Grounds. Rhydalla reads the orders and confirms the worst: the Lich King’s servants have already reanimated and empowered the Black Knight. The Crusade’s intervention was too late to prevent the resurrection, but Rhydalla vows to alert the tournament’s participants to the threat. She passes the information to High Crusader Adelard.

Efficiency Tips

  • This is the only quest in the Black Knight chain that awards a Champion’s Seal in addition to reputation and gold.
  • Kohler does not count as a Cult of the Damned member for any daily quest objectives. Killing him only serves this quest.
  • The area around Deathspeaker’s Watch is densely populated with Scourge mobs. If you are also doing the Champion daily Battle Before The Citadel or similar kill quests, you can combine trips.
  • The Scourge-killing daily Threat From Above (Chillmaw) also becomes available after completing this quest, rather than only after The Black Knight’s Fall. Both quests are prerequisites.

Lore & Secrets

Too Late to Stop It

The orders you recover reveal Doctor Kohler was commanded by the Lich King himself to sacrifice a Crusader named Kul on the nearby altar to bring the Black Knight back to full power.

By the time you arrive, the ritual is already underway. You kill the doctor and retrieve his orders, but the Black Knight’s resurrection cannot be reversed.

You spent the entire chain building a case against the Black Knight, defeated him in open combat, only to discover the Cult had contingency plans all along. The questline ends on an unresolved note, with the Black Knight reanimated and his next move unknown.

Connection to Trial of the Champion

The storyline picks up without further quests when the Black Knight crashes the Trial of the Champion dungeon. He flies in on a frostwyrm, kills a herald of the Crusade (either Arelas Brightstar or Jaeren Sunsworn depending on faction), and fights the players through three phases before being destroyed permanently.

The chain simply ends here, and the Black Knight’s dungeon appearance serves as a surprise payoff for anyone who completed the questline.

Kul the Reckless

The caged Crusader, Kul the Reckless, is being held as a sacrifice to fuel the Black Knight’s resurrection. His fate ties directly into the Doctor’s orders. This is one of the few times in the Argent Tournament storyline where the Cult’s activities result in a visible on-screen victim rather than just referenced deaths.

West of the grounds and up the hill. Near enough that the pennants are visible from it.

There is a raised platform at the west end of the watch. The Black Knight was sitting in the middle of it inside a bubble of sickly green light, freshly undead and not yet finished.

Two Sacrificed Aspirants were channeling into him.

Aspirants. That is a rank I held three weeks ago. Squire David calls men of it out into the ring one at a time, and a val’kyr told me they clamor for the chance. Both of these were corpses, and the Dark Zealots were tending the bodies while the bodies did the work.

Kul the Reckless watched all of it from a black cage.

Doctor Kohler died without ceremony. His orders were on him.

Crusader Rhydalla read them through twice. “The doctor will not have time to complete his work, but his plan is already in motion. From what you’ve reported, the Lich King’s servants have reanimated and empowered the Black Knight and there’s no telling what the knight’s master has in mind.” Then: “You have done well in uncovering this plot. I will tell High Crusader Adelard of your findings and together, we will alert the tournament’s participants.”

Alert the participants. Somebody ought to, and somebody ought also to work out which two aspirants stopped answering the roll, because Kohler did not bring those up the hill from anywhere else.

The Black Knight is on his feet again somewhere out past the ridge and the Crusade’s answer is not to hunt him but to finish building the army it started, which begins the day A Champion Rises.
