“If Valgarde falls, our primary supply line into Northrend will cease to exist. From there it’ll only be a matter of time before we’re all servants of the Lich King. Now I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a wife and three kids back in Elwynn and I’ll be damned if I’ll go down without a fight.
The situation here is critical and we can use all the manpower you’re able to muster. Get to the front gate and help the guards defend the city against the invading monsters!”

Quick Facts
Walkthrough
Head to Valgarde’s northern gate [58, 59], where Dragonflayer vrykul and their worgs are actively attacking the settlement. Both mob types count toward your total of 12.
Valgarde Defenders will assist you in combat. As long as you tag a mob before it dies, you receive full XP credit regardless of how much damage you dealt. The invaders and worgs spawn continuously, so there’s no need to hunt for them.

Lore Context
Vice Admiral Keller’s personal stake is clear in his quest text: “I’ve got a wife and three kids back in Elwynn and I’ll be damned if I’ll go down without a fight.” This isn’t just military duty; for Keller, losing Valgarde means never seeing his family again.
The attackers are vrykul, the half-giant proto-humans who serve King Ymiron and the Lich King. The Dragonflayer clan operates from Utgarde Keep across the river, and these raids are coordinated by Ingvar the Plunderer, the dungeon’s final boss. The invaders shout battle cries like “My life for Ymiron!” as they charge.
This quest establishes the stakes of the entire Howling Fjord experience: the vrykul are relentless, organized, and fanatically loyal to their king. Valgarde is under siege.

“If Valgarde falls,” Keller said, “our primary supply line into Northrend will cease to exist. From there it’ll only be a matter of time before we’re all servants of the Lich King.”
His voice dropped. “Now I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a wife and three kids back in Elwynn. And I’ll be damned if I’ll go down without a fight.”
At the front gate, the Dragonflayer vrykul pressed the line, massive warriors who made humans look like children. Their worgs flanked them, and the guards were barely holding when I arrived.
I waded in.
The vrykul were strong, several times stronger than a man, with a lot of reach. The first one overcommitted on a downward swing, and I stepped inside, drove my mace into his knee. The second learned nothing from watching, came in the same way.
Their worgs were faster and smarter, and one caught my arm before I could reset, teeth scraping against armor. I slammed the pommel into its skull until it let go.
A dozen, maybe more.
When it was done, the line was holding.
Keller nodded when I returned. “Morale is higher than ever now. I think they’ll be able to handle the remaining onslaught on their own. I’ve got bigger plans for you.”
Keller’s bigger plans turned out to concern the men sent to Wyrmskull who had not come back, which makes the next job Rescuing the Rescuers.
