“Some say Jonah was never quite right in the head, but I know the truth. It was the heart. That damned frozen heart! I saw the change in him the second he pulled it from the grave. I could see the blood freeze in his veins… It was then that the madness truly took over. He left us to hole up in his cave on the north side of this island. Last I heard he had thrown the heart in the back of his bear den. Too little, too late…
I’ll kill you myself if you even think about bringing that heart back here!”

“Some say Jonah was never quite right in the head,” Harry said, “but I know the truth. It was the heart. That damned frozen heart!”
He stared past me, seeing something that wasn’t there anymore.
“I saw the change in him the second he pulled it from the grave. I could see the blood freeze in his veins… It was then that the madness truly took over.”
Isuldof Iceheart’s curse made manifest. The ghost’s words echoed in my memory: Woe unto those that hold the heart as the curse of frozen blood besets them.
“He left us to hole up in his cave on the north side of this island. Last I heard he had thrown the heart in the back of his bear den. Too little, too late…”
Harry’s eyes refocused on me, and there was menace in them.
“I’ll kill you myself if you even think about bringing that heart back here!”
The cave was easy enough to find. Hozzer lay in the back of the den, a massive white bear curled around something that glowed faintly blue. The beast didn’t stir as I approached. Whether it slept or had simply surrendered to the cold emanating from its unwanted charge, I couldn’t say.
The heart itself was smaller than I expected. Dark crystal, veined with frost. I wrapped it in furs without touching it directly and backed out of the den. Hozzer never moved.
Orfus’s whiskers stiffened when I unwrapped it before him.
“The… The Frozen Heart of Isuldof?” He composed himself. “We must return all of the artifacts. When all four are gathered, you will put them back in their graves.”
Two recovered, and The Staff of Storm’s Fury was out on the water near the Isle of Spears with the weather already answering its curse.
