“When the tree Vordrassil fell, its hollow remains grew roots deep into the ground. I want you to go north of here to the three locations where the trunk shattered and go as far beneath the ground as you can. You’ll find them west of Grizzlemaw. Use this orb once you get there to get an imprint of the energy surrounding the area.
If we’re to heal the land, we must first find out what caused Vordrassil to fail as a world tree all those years ago.”

Lore Context
The Geomancer’s Orb captures an “imprint” of the energy deep beneath Vordrassil’s remains. Thayreen’s reaction upon turn-in is alarming: the energy is “overpowering,” and she confirms that “a dark force has tainted the ground.”
This dark force is Yogg-Saron, whose prison lies deep beneath Northrend. Vordrassil’s roots grew deep enough to breach that prison, allowing the Old God to corrupt the tree and use it as a conduit into the Emerald Dream. Thayreen doesn’t yet know this, but the chain’s subsequent quests gradually piece together the truth.
Completing both this quest and The Failed World Tree unlocks A Possible Link (investigating furbolg corruption) and Children of Ursoc (meeting Ursoc’s bear children Orsonn and Kodian).

Vikstone's War JournalThayreen gave me a crystal orb. “When Vordrassil fell, its hollow remains grew roots deep into the ground. Go to the three locations where the trunk shattered. Go as far beneath the ground as you can.” She was a healer looking at a wound she couldn’t yet diagnose. “Use this orb to get an imprint of the energy there. If we’re to heal the land, we must first find out what caused Vordrassil to fail.”
I descended into Vordrassil’s Heart first.

The passages wound downward through rotting wood and stone. Entropic Oozes slithered in the shadows. The orb pulsed, drinking in something I couldn’t see but could feel pressing against my mind like fingers searching for a crack.
The Limb was worse. The Tears, worse still.
By the third descent, I understood why our ancestors had destroyed the tree. Something had been reaching up through those roots. Whatever lived down there was patient and aware that I’d come looking. The orb grew heavier with each reading.
When I returned, Thayreen’s face went pale as she studied the orb’s contents.
“The energy is… overpowering.” Her voice dropped. “A dark force has tainted the ground near Vordrassil’s remains. We will need to investigate more.”
Whatever slept beneath these hills had been dreaming a long time.
The energy beneath Vordrassil is overpowering, and whatever poisoned those roots hasn’t stopped at trees. The corruption’s reach extends to the furbolg and the wild gods themselves in A Possible Link.
