“I hope Gryan knows I withdrew my men from Thor Modan when the battle began. There’s no way we can excavate anything until that place settles down. You seem like a brave sort, though, and you have Stoutmantle’s trust. Thor Modan is just to the northeast of us and the battle still rages between our Earthen brothers and the creations of those accursed iron dwarves.
Help our brethren to even the odds and I’ll start figuring out how we’re going to accomplish this survey of Thor Modan.”

Lore Context
Brugar Stoneshear is an Explorers’ League archaeologist who was forced to halt excavation work at Thor Modan when the battle between the earthen and iron dwarves erupted. Captain Gryan Stoutmantle ordered Brugar’s team to pivot from research to supporting the military effort of finding tunnel routes to Icecrown Glacier beneath Thor Modan.
The Runic Battle Golems are iron dwarf constructs deployed to fight back the earthen siege. The earthen and stone giants (led by Kurun) have been at war with the iron dwarves here for millennia. The iron dwarves of Thor Modan serve Loken, the corrupted Keeper, which foreshadows the larger Loken storyline in Storm Peaks and the confrontation in Halls of Lightning.
Thor Modan’s architecture mirrors Ironforge itself, complete with a statue resembling Modimus Anvilmar, hinting at the shared origins between Ironforge dwarves (Curse of Flesh descendants) and their titan-forged ancestors.

Vikstone's War JournalStoneshear’s mood had improved with the moonshine, but his problem remained.

“I withdrew my men from Thor Modan when the battle began. There’s no way we can excavate anything until that place settles down.” He studied me over the rim of his cup. “You seem like a brave sort, and you have Stoutmantle’s trust. The battle still rages between our Earthen brothers and the creations of those accursed iron dwarves. Help our brethren to even the odds.”
Thor Modan was in the hills to the northeast, stone carved into dwarven shapes. The clash of battle echoed across its grounds before I reached it. Earthen defenders held their lines against Runic Battle Golems, constructs of corrupted stone and malevolent enchantment.
Fighting alongside the Earthen felt different. There was no blood on the ground here. My axe rang against runic-etched stone, each impact jarring up my arms. The golems advanced without fear or hesitation, and the only way to stop them was to find the rune that held them together and break it.
Ten fell before the Earthen could regroup.
Stoneshear listened to my report.
“Sounds like things may be calming down there a bit.” He nodded slowly. “We’ll start looking for entrances to the iron dwarves’ tunnel system.”
The Earthen fought to defend their home. The iron dwarves sent constructs. I was simply the weight that tipped the scale.
The golems are scrap and the earthen have breathing room. Now Stoneshear wants what the military came for: tunnel entrances beneath the iron dwarf city in Uncovering the Tunnels.
