Objective: Recover a copy of “The Path of Redemption” from the Scarlet Onslaught and return it to Wyrmbane.

• Prerequisite: Unlocks after completing Parting Thoughts (Forgotten Shore chain conclusion). This quest is not part of the Frostmourne Cavern investigation chain; it is a standalone side quest that becomes available alongside What Secrets Men Hide and The Return of the Crusade?.

Walkthrough

Wyrmbane briefs you: “‘The Path of Redemption,’ ever heard of it? It is allegedly a journal that holds the prophetic ramblings of High General Abbendis of the Scarlet Onslaught. Within that book can be found the motivations and goals of the Scarlet zealots… not to mention a whole lot of insanity.”

Head northeast from Wintergarde Keep to the Onslaught Base Camp at approximately [87, 38]. Kill Scarlet Onslaught soldiers until the book drops. The confirmed drop sources are:

• Onslaught Infantry
• Onslaught Scout
• Onslaught Mason

The drop rate is high. Most report getting the book within the first few kills.

Return the book to Wyrmbane. He reads it and reacts: “Abbendis has gone off the deep end. The Light speaks to her now? Despite the inane ramblings, this journal gives us a never before seen look into the mind of the Scarlet zealots. This was a great find. Lord Fordragon will be pleased.”

All four quests share the same camp. Grab them all from Wintergarde Keep before heading out.

Tips

• Bloodhounds don’t drop it. Only humanoid soldiers (Infantry, Scout, Mason) carry copies. Don’t waste time on the dog mobs.
• Both camps work for the kill quest; only the northeast camp has the map. If you’ve already looted the map from the northeast tower, you can finish killing Onslaught soldiers at the northwest camp too. But the book drops at either location.
• Read the book. Right-click the item in your inventory before turning it in. It contains excerpts from High General Abbendis‘s diary, including her account of “the Light” whispering to her in dreams. This is significant lore.

Lore & Story Context

“The Path of Redemption” is an edited version of The Diary of High General Abbendis, sanitized for distribution among the Scarlet Onslaught’s rank and file. It documents Abbendis’s founding of the Onslaught and her journey to Northrend.

The diary reveals that a mysterious voice kept whispering to her: “Come to me.” Abbendis was convinced it was the Holy Light commanding her to take the most faithful Scarlet Crusaders north. She named the expedition the “Crimson Dawn” and rechristened her followers the Scarlet Onslaught.

The chilling truth, which players discover through other questlines, is that the voice was never the Light. It was Mal’Ganis, the dreadlord who orchestrated Arthas’s fall in Warcraft III, manipulating Abbendis through false visions.

Mal’Ganis had taken the form of the long-dead Admiral Barean Westwind and was secretly controlling the Onslaught from within. The entire expedition to Northrend, Abbendis’s “divine mission,” her founding of New Hearthglen, all of it was a dreadlord’s puppet show.

Wyrmbane’s reaction says it all: “Lord Fordragon will be pleased.” This intelligence goes directly to Bolvar Fordragon, who commands the Alliance’s Northrend campaign from Wintergarde Keep and will eventually lead the assault at the Wrathgate.

Cross-Expansion Connections

• Death Knight Starting Zone: Players who roll a Death Knight encounter the original, unedited Diary of High General Abbendis during The Scarlet Onslaught Emerges questline. The full diary contains additional entries not present in the “Path of Redemption” version, including details Abbendis omitted from the public edition.
• New Hearthglen (Dragonblight): The Onslaught fortress where the full diary can be found during the Horde quest The Truth Will Out at [68, 76]. Agent Skully’s espionage operation infiltrates the fortress and exposes Abbendis’s leadership.
• Onslaught Harbor (Icecrown): The Onslaught’s final stronghold, where Mal’Ganis ultimately drops his Westwind disguise and reveals himself. The diary’s false visions come full circle when players confront the dreadlord who started it all.
