Wanted: Onslaught Commander Iustus

Wanted: Onslaught Commander Iustus

Group Quest
Alliance • Dragonblight • Level 74 • Onslaught Base Camp
Kill Onslaught Commander Iustus at the top of the scout tower in the Onslaught Base Camp.
Wanted poster inside the Wintergarde Keep inn (appears after completing Flight of the Wintergarde Defender). Iustus is a level 74 elite at the top of the tower at the Onslaught Base Camp [87, 38]. Suggested 4 players, but widely considered the easiest of the three Wanted bounties and soloable by most classes in the mid-70s. Important: Do not fight on the tower stairs or he will evade-bug and reset to full health. Aggro him at the top, then jump off the tower to the ground. He walks the long way down, giving you time to reposition. Fight in the open snowfield. His Whirlwind is his most dangerous ability. He's snarable but not stunnable. Clear Onslaught mobs on the stairs before pulling. Do this with The Return of the Crusade? since you'll hit the 20-kill count clearing to him.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
A battalion of 7th Legion soldiers had been ambushed on the northeastern road. There were no prisoners or survivors. Von Zeldig posted the bounty himself. Zaboomafu studied the Scarlet banners at the gate: "Same faith. Different conclusion."

Upon the northeastern path from Wintergarde a battalion of 7th Legion were ambushed and slain by Onslaught Commander Iustus and an army of mindless Scarlet Onslaught zealots. Such cold and calculated actions must be met with force! Wintergarde demands justice! Seek out Onslaught Commander Iustus at Onslaught Base Camp to the northeast and end his miserable existence.

I will hand out the reward for this bounty to any who would dare take up the task!

Quest Giver: Wanted! poster — Wintergarde Keep Inn (appears after completing Flight of the Wintergarde Defender)

Turn In: Highlord Leoric Von Zeldig — Wintergarde Keep

Objective: Kill Onslaught Commander Iustus at the Onslaught Base Camp.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Reaching Iustus

  • The Onslaught Base Camp is a Scarlet Onslaught encampment northeast of Wintergarde Keep, just north of where Naxxramas hovers over the Carrion Fields. Commander Iustus is at the top of the scout tower under construction in the camp at [87, 38].
  • The camp is populated with Onslaught Infantry and Onslaught Masons. Clear any mobs along the stairs and sides of the tower before engaging Iustus. You can accidentally pull mobs on the tower stairs mid-fight, which complicates things unnecessarily.
  • Iustus aggros as soon as you enter line of sight at the top of the tower. There is no time to set up a cast before the pull, so be ready to engage immediately.

Iustus’s Abilities

  • Whirlwind: Iustus uses a Whirlwind attack that deals significant AoE melee damage. This is his most dangerous ability. Ranged players can step out of it, but be warned that moving too far away on the tower can trigger the evade bug (see below).
  • Melee: Hits moderately hard for a level 74 Elite. Not as punishing as Kreug Oathbreaker’s raw damage, but still dangerous to cloth and leather wearers, especially during Whirlwind.
  • Snarable: Iustus is susceptible to slows and snares, making him kitable for classes with slowing abilities.
  • Not Stunnable: Player reports indicate he cannot be stunned or rooted, so most hard CC will not work.
  • Creature Type: Humanoid (not Undead). Abilities like Turn Evil and Shackle Undead will NOT work on him.

The Evade Bug

  • Iustus is infamous for evade-bugging. If you fight him on the tower stairs or move to terrain he cannot path to, he will reset to full health. This is the single most common cause of failed attempts reported by players.
  • Safest approach: Aggro him at the top of the tower, then immediately jump off the tower to the snow-covered ground below. He will take the long way down through the stairs, giving you several seconds to bandage, set up traps, or reposition. Fight him in the open snowfield outside the tower where pathing is clean.
  • Alternatively, some players fight him on the flat platform at the very top of the tower successfully. The problem areas are the stairs between levels.
  • One creative approach: if you face the tower, the right side has a crack/gap. You can jump down through it, and Iustus will walk the long way around. Jump back up through the crack when he gets close and repeat. Tedious but effective for ranged classes.

Combat Strategy

General Approach:

  • Of the three Wintergarde Wanted bounties, Iustus is widely considered the easiest. He has fewer HP than Kreug, no fear/horror mechanic, and his damage output is manageable for most well-geared characters at level. Many players solo him comfortably in the early-to-mid 70s.
  • Priority #1: Get him off the tower. Do not fight on the stairs. Jump off and fight in the open.
  • Priority #2: Avoid or mitigate Whirlwind. Ranged players should step back when it begins. Melee players should use defensive cooldowns to survive it.
  • Priority #3: Clear the nearby Onslaught mobs before pulling so nothing wanders in during the fight.

Solo Tips by Role:

  • Plate tanks (DK, Warrior, Paladin): The most straightforward kill of the three Wanted bounties. Death Knights can Death Strike through his damage. Protection Paladins barely need cooldowns. Protection Warriors report finishing the fight above 75% health. Just pull, fight, and keep defensive abilities handy for Whirlwind.
  • Hunters: Send pet first, pull Iustus down from the tower, and fight in the open. Keep Mend Pet running. Scorpid Sting helps reduce incoming damage. Less demanding than the Kreug fight since there is no horror effect to manage.
  • Warlocks (Demonology): Standard approach: Felguard tanks, DoT him up, Health Funnel as needed. If using Affliction, Curse of Exhaustion lets you kite him effectively in the open snowfield outside the tower. Corruption, CoE, kite, repeat.
  • Casters (Mages, Druids, Priests): Pull him off the tower and kite in the snow. His snare susceptibility makes this manageable. Mages can Slow and kite with instant casts. Balance Druids report that Barkskin and treants provide enough survivability to brute-force the fight.
  • Enhancement Shamans: Should have an easier time than with Kreug. Feral Spirit wolves add survivability and damage. Keep your emergency heals ready but this is a more forgiving fight.
  • Rogues: One of the harder classes for this fight. He cannot be stunned, so Evasion and cooldown management are critical. Undergeared rogues in the low 70s may want to bring a partner.

Efficiency Tips

  • Do Alongside: Pick up The Return of the Crusade? from Commander Lynore Windstryke at Wintergarde Keep. This quest requires killing 20 Scarlet Onslaught at the Onslaught Base Camp. You can complete most or all of the kill count while clearing your way to Iustus. Also grab all three Wanted poster quests before heading out.
  • Approach Route: The Onslaught Base Camp is northeast of Wintergarde Keep. It is the farthest of the three Wanted targets from the keep, but the route there is relatively safe compared to trekking through the Scourge-infested Carrion Fields to reach Kreug.
  • No group needed for most classes. Unlike Kreug Oathbreaker (Suggested: 5), Iustus at Suggested: 4 is more forgiving.

Lore & Secrets

The Scarlet Onslaught in Dragonblight

  • The Scarlet Onslaught is a splinter faction of the Scarlet Crusade that sailed to Northrend under High General Brigitte Abbendis, declaring it the “Crimson Dawn” and the time to take the fight directly to the Lich King. They built three strongholds in Dragonblight: the massive fortress of New Hearthglen on the southeastern coast, Scarlet Point near Frostmourne Cavern, and the smaller Onslaught Base Camp where Iustus commands.
  • What makes the Onslaught terrifying is not their zealotry but who is pulling their strings. Admiral Barean Westwind, who appeared at New Hearthglen claiming to have miraculously survived his fleet’s destruction years earlier, is actually the dreadlord Mal’Ganis wearing Westwind’s corpse as a disguise. Mal’Ganis was the very demon Arthas pursued to Northrend and “killed” with Frostmourne during Warcraft III. His survival and infiltration of the Onslaught mirrors how the dreadlord Balnazzar had already infiltrated the original Scarlet Crusade back in the Eastern Kingdoms by possessing Grand Crusader Saiden Dathrohan. The Crusade’s story, in every iteration, is one of demonic manipulation.

Iustus’s Ambush

The quest text reveals that Iustus “ambushed and slain” an entire battalion of the 7th Legion on the northeastern path from Wintergarde. This is notable because the 7th Legion are not green recruits; they are the Alliance’s elite special forces, veterans of campaigns dating back to the Second War. For Iustus to have wiped out a battalion of them with “mindless zealots” speaks to either his tactical cunning or the sheer fanaticism of his forces.

The bounty is posted by Highlord Von Zeldig himself, unlike the other two Wanted quests, one of which (Kreug) was posted by a grieving civilian widow.

Cross-Expansion Connections

The Scarlet Onslaught’s Fate

  • Horde players encounter the Onslaught extensively through the Venomspite quest chains, which include infiltrating New Hearthglen with a spy named Agent Skully (an X-Files reference alongside her Horde counterpart Deathguard Molder).
  • The Onslaught’s story continues in Icecrown, where survivors from New Hearthglen regroup at Onslaught Harbor. There, Knights of the Ebon Blade death knight players eventually confront “Admiral Westwind” and force him to reveal his true form: the dreadlord Mal’Ganis, who has been manipulating the entire organization from the beginning.
  • In Legion, Mal’Ganis returns yet again as a boss encounter, proving that dreadlords are exceptionally difficult to permanently destroy. New Hearthglen itself persists into Legion content, where priests of the Conclave visit the fortress to recruit Scarlet Apostates who have broken from the Onslaught’s ideology.
  • In their post-Shadowlands survey of Northrend, the Bronzebeard brothers noted that the Onslaught and the Scourge are both leaderless now, and wondered whether the remaining Scarlet crusaders could be reasoned with. Brann’s answer: they couldn’t.

WotLK Classic vs. Original WotLK

  • In WotLK Classic, this quest awards Northrend Adventuring Supplies in addition to the armor choice, which was not present in the original 2008 version.

Warrior IconVikstone's War Journal

This bounty came from Von Zeldig himself, not a grieving civilian.

Vikstone Portrait Act 1
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

A battalion of 7th Legion soldiers had been ambushed on the northeastern path from Wintergarde. Onslaught Commander Iustus and his Scarlet zealots had slaughtered them all. There were no prisoners or survivors.

Von Zeldig’s notice: “Such cold and calculated actions must be met with force. Wintergarde demands justice. Seek out Iustus at the Onslaught Base Camp and end his miserable existence.”

Third bounty in as many days. Buri and Zaboomafu had become Von Zeldig’s regular hands by now.

The Scarlet Onslaught made no effort to hide their camp. Their banners flew openly, red against the sky, as if daring anyone to challenge their presence. They believed their cause made them righteous, and the 7th Legion dead on that road might have disagreed.

Zaboomafu slowed at the gate, studying the banners.

“Same faith,” he said.

Iustus’s zealots met us first. We gave them what they’d accepted and pushed through to their leader.

Iustus stood at the camp’s center, surrounded by his faithful. His blade work was clean, his footwork precise, and he fought with certainty.

But certainty isn’t armor. Buri kept the zealots off our flanks while Zaboomafu and I pressed Iustus together. I found Iustus’s tells, and when his guard dropped for a fraction of a breath, I drove steel through it.

He died looking surprised. They often do.

Von Zeldig received the news, gritting his teeth as he spoke.

“Is that pompous fool dead? At least for now the Scarlet Onslaught suffers a setback in their nefarious plans. You have done Wintergarde a great service.”

Wintergarde’s debts were paid and one assignment was left at the 7th Legion Front, where something had been breeding in the snobold camps along the Wyrmrest road and wanted Pest Control before it became a proper problem.
