Wanted: Kreug Oathbreaker

Group Quest
Alliance • Dragonblight • Level 74 • Carrion Fields
Kill the flesh giant Kreug Oathbreaker in the Carrion Fields and report to Highlord Leoric Von Zeldig.
Wanted poster inside the Wintergarde Keep inn (appears after completing Flight of the Wintergarde Defender). Kreug is a level 73 elite flesh giant at [89, 50] in the southeastern Carrion Fields. ~130,000 HP, hits 2,000-3,000 on plate. Suggested 5 players. Clear nearby mobs before pulling. Important: Dispel his Broken Oath buff immediately every time he casts it (+30% attack speed, +10% damage). His Incite Horror is a horror effect, not a fear. Fear Ward, Tremor Totem, and Berserker Rage will not work against it. PvP trinkets and Bestial Wrath will. Save defensive cooldowns for his melee stun (Backbreaker), which deals heavy damage while you're incapacitated. Soloable by DKs, Prot Paladins, and BM Hunters with careful play.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Illusia Lune had posted the bounty with everything she had left. Her husband, her children, the Whisperveils. All killed by Kreug. The notice ended with two words: "Please vindicate us." Vikstone brought Zaboomafu and Buri, and the flesh giant learned that everything falls eventually.

The Scourge flesh giant known as Kreug Oathbreaker was responsible for the deaths of my husband, children and my dear friends, the Whisperveils. Those brave enough to take on this bounty will find Kreug in the southeastern reaches of the Carrion Fields. I demand justice! Kill Kreug Oathbreaker!

In the event that Kreug is slain, I have pooled money and items together and given them to Highlord Leoric Von Zeldig to give out as a reward. Please vindicate us!

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

Finding Kreug

  • Kreug Oathbreaker is a level 73 Elite flesh giant patrolling the southeastern reaches of the Carrion Fields at approximately [89, 50]. He is enormous and easy to spot.
  • The Carrion Fields are crawling with Scourge mobs. Clear the area around Kreug before pulling him. His Incite Horror can send you running into additional mobs, which is a common cause of death on this quest.
  • He patrols near some large fallen logs. Use these as a landmark to locate him.

Kreug’s Abilities

  • Broken Oath: Self-buff that increases his attack speed by 30% and physical damage by 10% for 10 seconds. This is dispellable (Hunters can Tranq Shot it, Warriors can Shield Slam it off, Priests can Dispel Magic, etc.). Remove this immediately or the incoming damage becomes brutal, especially if it overlaps with his stun.
  • Incite Horror: A ranged horror effect that causes the target to flee for 2 seconds and deals Shadow damage every second. This is NOT a fear. It is a horror effect, which means fear-removal abilities like Berserker Rage, Fear Ward, Tremor Totem, and Will of the Forsaken will NOT work against it. Bestial Wrath (which grants immunity to all CC) and Will to Survive/PvP trinkets will still break it.
  • Melee Stun: Kreug has a powerful melee-range stun (referred to as “Backbreaker“) that deals heavy damage while you are incapacitated. This is the most dangerous part of the fight. If Broken Oath is active during the stun, you can lose massive chunks of health in seconds.

Combat Strategy

General Approach:

  • This is tagged as a 5-player group quest and is one of the tougher Wanted bounties in Dragonblight. He hits hard (approximately 2,000-3,000 per swing on plate, much more on cloth/leather) and has roughly 130,000 HP.
  • Priority #1: Dispel Broken Oath every time he casts it. This single action dramatically reduces the fight’s difficulty.
  • Priority #2: Clear nearby adds before engaging. His horror will send you wandering into them.
  • Priority #3: Save your biggest defensive cooldowns for his stun. You cannot act during it, so preemptive damage reduction is key.

Solo Tips by Role:

  • Plate tanks (DK, Warrior, Paladin): The most straightforward approach. Use cooldowns to survive his stun phases. Death Knights have an easier time thanks to self-healing through Death Strike. Protection Paladins can use Turn Evil, Hammer of Justice, and Repentance to create healing windows, as Kreug is susceptible to CC effects including stuns, Turn Evil, and Shackle Undead. Protection Warriors should keep Thunder Clap, Demoralizing Shout, and Disarm rolling while using Shield Slam to purge Broken Oath.
  • Hunters (BM recommended): Use a tanky pet (turtle or bear). The key is Freezing Trap management. Let your pet tank until it drops to around 40% health, then pull Kreug onto a Freezing Trap with Distracting Shot and use the 20 seconds to bandage your pet. Tranq Shot his Broken Oath buff immediately. Save Bestial Wrath exclusively for breaking horror at critical moments, not for damage. Do NOT use Serpent Sting as it will break your traps. Use Scorpid Sting for damage reduction instead. His hitbox is deceptively small despite his enormous model, so be precise with trap placement.
  • Warlocks (Demonology): Send your Felguard in and Health Funnel from maximum range (45 yards). At that range, his Incite Horror cannot reach you. Avoid applying DoTs that force you to get within horror range. The fight is slow but safe with Improved Health Funnel talents.
  • Priests (Holy/Shadow): He can be Shackled. Six Shackle rotations give enough time for Shadowfiend and Hymn of Hope cooldowns to refresh, making this a viable solo approach.
  • Casters (Mages, Ele Shamans): Kitable with slows, but be warned that he resets fairly quickly if kited too far (approximately 20 seconds of running triggers a leash). Kite in tight circles near his patrol area rather than trying to drag him long distances. Mages with Slow can carefully kite while using Fire Blast and Arcane Barrage.

Creative Cheese: The Steamtank Trick

  • If you are on the quest Steamtank Surprise, you can ride the steam tank near Kreug. The NPC gunners in the back of the tank will shoot him and periodically net him, allowing you to kite while they deal damage. When he reaches very low health, hop out and land the killing blow yourself, otherwise you will not get quest credit. Be careful not to let Kreug target the gunners, as they do not respawn.

Efficiency Tips

  • Do Alongside: Grab all three Wanted poster quests before heading out. Kreug is the closest of the three targets to Wintergarde Keep since he is already in the Carrion Fields where you have been questing. High Shaman Bloodpaw is in the far southeastern Eldritch Heights, and Onslaught Commander Iustus is at the Onslaught Base Camp to the northeast.
  • Respawn Timer: Kreug respawns in approximately 2.5 minutes if you need another attempt or are farming his drops.
  • Group up if needed. There is no shame in grabbing a second player for this one. Even just one healer or one additional DPS trivializes the encounter. Ask in General chat at Wintergarde Keep.

Lore & Secrets

What Is a Flesh Giant?

  • Flesh giants are the next evolution of the Scourge’s abomination concept. While abominations are stitched together from human-sized corpses, flesh giants are assembled from the body parts of Northrend’s native giant races, making them far larger and more powerful. They are considered the Scourge’s answer to the Burning Legion’s Fel Reavers. The prototype flesh giant Grobbulus is encountered as a boss in Naxxramas, the necropolis floating directly above the Carrion Fields where Kreug patrols.

The “Oathbreaker” Title

  • Kreug’s title of “Ymirjar Giant Lord” connects him to the Ymirjar, the Lich King’s elite warrior caste of vrykul. The Ymirjar are the victors of deadly combat trials at Jotunheim in Icecrown, and they inhabit the fortress city of Ymirheim. Kreug is an oddity within the Ymirjar because he is a flesh giant rather than a vrykul, and lore sources note this anomaly without fully explaining it. His “Oathbreaker” title could suggest he was a giant who swore allegiance to a faction and then betrayed it, or it may reference his oath to serve the Lich King through undeath. Players will encounter the Ymirjar in force much later when they reach Icecrown.

Illusia Lune’s Story

The quest is posted by Illusia Lune, a Wintergarde civilian who lost her husband, children, and dear friends (the Whisperveils) to Kreug. The personal nature of this bounty, funded by a grieving widow pooling her own resources, adds emotional weight to what could otherwise be a simple “kill the elite” quest.

The civilian survivors of the Carrion Fields are defined by what the Scourge took from them.

Cross-Expansion Connections

Flesh Giants in Later Content

  • Players encounter increasingly powerful flesh giants throughout WotLK, culminating in encounters inside Icecrown Citadel itself (notably Rotface and Festergut in the Plagueworks wing, though these are technically flesh titans). The Fleshwerks in Icecrown is where the Scourge manufactures these constructs on an industrial scale.
  • Post-Shadowlands, the Bronzebeard brothers reported that the Fleshwerks is still operational under the leaderless Scourge, still producing constructs at a reduced rate with no guiding purpose.

WotLK Classic vs. Original WotLK

  • In WotLK Classic, this quest awards Northrend Adventuring Supplies in addition to the armor choice, which was not present in the original 2008 version.

Illusia Lune had posted it. Her husband. Her children. Her dear friends, the Whisperveils. All dead, all killed by the same creature: a Scourge flesh giant called Kreug Oathbreaker.

She’d pooled everything she had left and given it to Von Zeldig as a bounty. The notice ended with two words: “Please vindicate us.”

Zaboomafu read it and said nothing. He’d had plenty to say about gnome names the day before. Not now. Buri just pulled his weapon and looked at me.

We found Kreug in the southeastern reaches of the Carrion Fields. The flesh giant stood among the corpses, stitched together from a dozen bodies, animated by necromantic will, and given a name that suggested whoever he’d been before had broken something sacred enough to warrant remembering.

He saw us and charged.

Flesh giants don’t fight with skill. They fight with swinging arms thick as tree trunks, shrugging off wounds that would drop anything natural. Kreug’s fists cratered the ground and his roar shook bone from marrow. Then the shadow magic hit. A wave of horror poured off him like rot, and my legs tried to carry me backward before my mind caught up. Buri broke left, stumbling. Zaboomafu’s hand caught my arm, golden light flaring through the fear and burning it clean.

“Stand,” the dwarf said.

We stood. All three of us cut at the sinews that held him together, the necromantic sutures that bound flesh to stolen flesh. Kreug was slow to turn and we used that. Zaboomafu hammered consecrated light into the abomination’s flank and the frenzy stuttered.

Everything falls eventually. He collapsed in pieces, the dark magic finally giving out.

Von Zeldig received confirmation with a nod.

“Well done. I will notify Illusia that a hero has heard her call for help and risen to meet the challenge.”

Somewhere, a woman who’d lost everything would learn that the thing responsible had been destroyed. It wouldn’t bring them back. But sometimes destroying the monster is all that’s left to give. I understood that better than most.

Two collected and one name left, Wanted: Onslaught Commander Iustus, sitting on top of a half-finished tower at the Onslaught base camp with the 7th Legion wanting him off it.
