Walkthrough

Zelig has gazed into the Scrying Orb and seen your path. His directions: “Take the road southeast through the ravaged town square. Follow the trail until you arrive at Dawn’s Reach.”

Exit the Keep, head south through Wintergarde Village’s town square, and continue southeast. The road passes through the Carrion Fields, which are thick with Scourge. Keep moving along the road and you’ll reach Dawn’s Reach, a small Argent Crusade encampment at approximately [87, 57], directly south of Naxxramas.

You’ll know you’re getting close when you see riflemen firing at Scourge from defensive positions along the road.

Orik Trueheart is at the campfire alongside Priestess Tilda Darathan. Speak to him to complete the quest. He’s been expecting you: “Zelig sent word, friend. We have been expecting you.”

Tips

• The Carrion Fields are dangerous but manageable. The road between Wintergarde and Dawn’s Reach passes through Scourge-infested territory. Stick to the road rather than cutting cross-country. At level 72, most mobs here shouldn’t be a serious threat if you pull carefully.
• Mounted speed helps. If you have a fast mount, you can ride through much of the Carrion Fields without stopping. The mobs thin out as you approach Dawn’s Reach, where the Argent Crusade riflemen provide covering fire.
• Pair with Carrion Fields quests. If you still have active quests in the Wintergarde Village area (Rescue from Town Square, The Fate of the Dead, etc.), complete those on your way through rather than backtracking later.

Lore & Story Context

Zelig’s quest text hints at something deeply unsettling: “Many years ago an atrocity was committed upon the shores of Dragonblight. The act itself remains shrouded in darkness.”

He can sense something terrible happened at the Forgotten Shore, but the orb won’t reveal exactly what, only that you need to go there.

Orik’s introduction reveals a lot about what’s happening at Dawn’s Reach. He’s a paladin of the Argent Crusade, and he and Tilda Darathan have been “sent to quell the unfortunate damned souls attempting to escape Wintergarde.”

These damned souls are the ghosts of Alliance soldiers who died on the Forgotten Shore. Their identity and the “atrocity” Zelig sensed will be revealed over the next several quests: they are the spirits of Arthas Menethil’s own troops from Warcraft III.

During the Third War, Prince Arthas arrived in Northrend with an Alliance expedition to hunt down the dreadlord Mal’Ganis. When King Terenas sent orders recalling the expedition, Arthas secretly hired mercenaries to burn his own ships, then blamed the mercenaries for the destruction and let his enraged soldiers murder them.

With no way home, the troops were forced to stay and fight. Many perished in the frozen wastes. Their spirits still haunt the shore, trapped in an endless loop of waiting for a prince who abandoned them, unaware that Arthas himself ordered the ships burned.

Orik’s connection to this tragedy is personal. He was himself a former member of the 1st Legion, Arthas’s original expedition. He was one of the soldiers who survived the stranding.

Later in the chain, when the truth is finally revealed, Orik’s reaction is visceral: “They don’t know. None of them know! They think Arthas to be some great hero, when in truth it was Arthas who ordered the ships burned. It was Arthas who left us all for dead in this frozen wasteland!”

Dawn’s Reach itself is a small Argent Crusade outpost positioned directly south of Naxxramas. Along with Light’s Trust (near Jintha’kalar on the Zul’Drak border), it represents the Crusade’s presence in Dragonblight, working to free cursed souls and contain the Scourge.
