Vikstone, we’re pretty certain that he’s still at the pumping station out in the middle of the pools to the east. The last we saw of him, he was in the command hut up top. Go up there and research his stuff.

Walkthrough
Travel to the Fizzcrank Pumping Station in the Geyser Fields. Your destination is the command hut at the very top of the structure, approximately at [64, 23].
Reaching the Top:
The pumping station is a multi-level structure crawling with hostile mechagnomes. You have two options:
Inside the Hut:
The hut is empty when you arrive. Look for The Gearmaster’s Manual on a table immediately to the left of the doorway.
Important: The manual is on the table, NOT on the floor. There’s another book on the floor that does nothing.
Triggering the Boss:
Clicking the manual causes Gearmaster Mechazod to spawn behind you. He delivers a short speech before becoming hostile.
Critical mechanic: You only get credit for “researching” the manual if Mechazod is NOT present. If someone else recently spawned and killed him, you’ll need to wait for respawn, click the manual to spawn him fresh, and defeat him yourself. This can cause issues in groups where only the person who clicked the manual gets research credit.
Mechazod’s Speech
Before attacking, Mechazod delivers a tragically sympathetic monologue:
“You were looking for me, child? Why do you come to kill me? I only wish to help.”
“Now that I have been reassembled, we can return to a time of perfection… the time of the Titans!”
“But, I can see it in your eyes, hear it in your pulse rate. You would destroy me despite my offer of immortality!”
“Very well. It saddens me that it has come to this. I look upon all of you as if you were my children. I will slay you if I must!”
Combat
Mechazod is comparable in difficulty to the four lieutenants you defeated previously. He’s a straightforward solo fight for appropriately-leveled characters. After defeating him, loot Mechazod’s Head to complete the quest.
Lore Significance
This quest concludes one of WotLK’s most significant lore chains. Mechazod’s defeat doesn’t erase what he revealed: gnomes truly are descended from titan-forged mechanical beings, transformed by the Curse of Flesh. This unsettling truth about gnomish origins sets the stage for Ulduar’s deeper revelations about all titan-forged races.
Fizzcrank’s completion text reflects the weight of these events: “It is done then… you have saved us! If you hadn’t stopped him here, then who knows how far his madness would have spread? With the threats from the blue dragons and the Nexus War, not to mention the Lich King, the last thing we need is a mad creation of the Titans running loose!”
Horde Equivalent
Horde players complete the parallel quest Defeat the Gearmaster, given by Greatmother Taiga at Taunka’le Village. Both factions share the same boss encounter.
Cross-Expansion Connection: Hearthstone
Gearmaster Mechazod became a fan-favorite character when he appeared in Hearthstone’s first-ever cooperative Tavern Brawl, Unite Against Mechazod! (November 2015). In this mode, two players must work together to defeat Mechazod, who switches sides of the board each turn while attacking both heroes. His opening line references WotLK directly: “I will cleanse you both of the Curse of Flesh!”
The brawl was popular enough to spawn a sequel, Return of Mechazod!, cementing the character’s legacy beyond his original WoW appearance.

Vikstone's War Journal“You must confront Mechazod,” Jinky said. “If gnomes everywhere… no, everyone everywhere, are to stay alive.”
The pumping station rose from the geyser pools, metal and steam against the sky. I climbed to the command hut and found the manual first. There were diagrams of transformation, notes on “optimization.” It was the methodical work of a mind that saw flesh as a disease to be cured.
Then he appeared.
“You were looking for me, child?” Mechazod said. “Why do you come to kill me? I only wish to help.”
He towered over me, a gnome-shaped thing of gears and titan alloy, and his eyes glowed with something that might have been warmth.
“Now that I have been reassembled, we can return to a time of perfection. The time of the Titans!”
I said nothing and raised my weapon.
“But I can see it in your eyes. Hear it in your pulse rate.” He sounded almost sorrowful. “You would destroy me despite my offer of immortality.”
“Yes.”
“Very well.” He straightened, joints clicking. “It saddens me that it has come to this. I look upon all of you as if you were my children.” His arms reconfigured into something with blades. “I will slay you if I must.”
He was fast, titan-crafted, and absolutely certain he was saving us. His first strike nearly took my head. I deflected the second, drove forward, and brought my mace down on his shoulder joint. Metal screamed as he staggered, recovered, and came at me with spinning blades that carved the air.
I weathered the assault. His patterns were precise, predictable, and I exploited them, drove him back with hammering blows, dented the chassis, cracked the joints.
The killing blow caved in his chest. He dropped to his knees, eyes flickering.
“I… only wished… to help…”
Then the light went out.
I took his head. Proof for Fizzcrank.
The old gnome breathed a heavy sigh when I returned. “It is done then. You have saved us.” He looked at the severed head for a long time before he spoke again. “If you hadn’t stopped him here, who knows how far his madness would have spread?”
He was right. But standing there, I couldn’t shake Mechazod’s final words. He’d only wished to help, and that was the horror of it.
The Gearmaster was dead and what he had said about where gnomes come from could not be unlearned, though the nearer question was What’s the Matter with the Transmatter?
