Walkthrough

This is a lore-focused quest with no combat. After accepting the quest, speak to Fizzcrank Fullthrottle again and select “Tell me what’s going on here, Fizzcrank” to begin his tale. Click through the dialog options (usually “Go on”) until he finishes. Once complete, head downstairs via the elevator and exit the building. Jinky Wingnut is immediately outside to the left.

Tip: If the dialog option to continue the story doesn’t appear, exit the conversation and speak to Fizzcrank again.

The Story: Origins of the Mechagnomes

Fizzcrank’s tale reveals critical lore about gnomish origins. The gnomes built their pumping station in the Geyser Fields to extract oil for their flying machines. During operations, they found strange mechanical parts clogging the pipelines. Unable to resist a puzzle, they reassembled the parts into a robot resembling a giant gnome.

The construct awoke and identified itself as Gearmaster Mechazod. He claimed to be one of the first gnomes ever created by “The Grand Architect,” a Titan keeper from within Ulduar. Mechazod had malfunctioned thousands of years ago and been buried underground until the pumping station accidentally reactivated him.

Mechazod explained that all gnomes were originally mechanical beings like himself, and that they had been afflicted by the “Curse of Flesh,” a condition that transforms titan-forged constructs into organic beings over millennia. In his warped gratitude for being reassembled, Mechazod decided to “cure” everyone by reversing the curse, forcibly transforming Fizzcrank’s crew into mechagnomes.

Those who resisted were captured; some were converted before others could escape.

Lore Context: The Grand Architect

“The Grand Architect” mentioned by Mechazod is Mimiron, one of the Titan Keepers who oversaw Ulduar. Mimiron created the original mechagnomes in his own image as servants and caretakers.

This quest chain is one of the first places in WoW to reveal that modern gnomes are descendants of mechanical beings, setting up major revelations later explored in the Ulduar raid.

Cross-Expansion Connections

This questline foreshadows broader Titan lore that becomes central to Wrath of the Lich King’s endgame:

• Ulduar Raid: You encounter Mimiron himself as a boss, now corrupted by Yogg-Saron’s influence. His chamber contains countless mechagnomes.
• Storm Peaks: The quest Slaves of the Stormforged involves liberating mechagnomes enslaved by iron dwarves, further expanding the lore introduced here.
• Battle for Azeroth: Mechagnomes become a playable Allied Race. A splinter group of gnomes settled on Mechagon Island seeking Titan technology, voluntarily enhancing themselves with mechanical parts. Their story comes full circle from Gearmaster Mechazod’s forced conversions to willing self-modification.

Easter Egg: Doctor Who Reference

The mechagnome questline contains a subtle nod to the BBC’s Doctor Who. Later in this chain, you can find The Ultrasonic Screwdriver, a quest item that starts its own side quest. This is an homage to the Doctor’s iconic sonic screwdriver.
