Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty

Quest 4 of 5 in the Mechagnome Chain
Alliance • Borean Tundra • Level 71 • Fizzcrank Airstrip
Turn the valves at four pumping stations to summon and destroy Mechazod's robot lieutenants.
Four stations in the Geyser Fields. Twonky at (60, 20), Max Blasto at (63, 22), The Grinder at (65, 28), ED-210 at (65, 17). Each station has a valve. Turn it, fight the robot that spawns. Follow the pipes on the ground to navigate between stations. All four are straightforward solo fights.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Four stations. Four constructs named like they'd walked out of a bad science fiction movie. Jinky seemed genuinely surprised when Vikstone came back in one piece.

“Okay, I think we’re ready for the penultimate assault… before you can bring down Mechazod, you’re going to have to dismantle his lieutenants first! You’ll find Twonky, ED-210, Max Blasto, and The Grinder at the West Point, North Point, Mid Point and South Point stations, respectively. To get them to show up, just turn the valves at the stations to mess up whatever they’re trying to do out there.

You can’t miss the places, they all have spinning lights.”

Objective: Dismantle Twonky, ED-210, Max Blasto, and The Grinder

Quick Facts

  • Chain Position: Quest 4 of 5 in the Mechagnome chain (penultimate quest)
  • Previous: Re-Cursive
  • Follow-Up: The Gearmaster

Walkthrough

Before you can confront Gearmaster Mechazod, you must destroy his four robot lieutenants stationed throughout the Geyser Fields. Each is located at a control station with a distinctive spinning light on top (lighthouse-like structures). Turn the valve at each station to summon the robot, then defeat it.

Robot Locations:

  • Twonky — West Point Station [60, 20]
  • ED-210 — North Point Station [65, 17]
  • Max Blasto — Mid Point Station [63, 22]
  • The Grinder — South Point Station [65, 28]

Efficient Route: Start at Twonky (westernmost), then move to Max Blasto (center), The Grinder (south), and finish with ED-210 (north). Following the pipes on the ground helps navigate between stations.

Mechanics

Each station has a valve you interact with. Turning the valve disrupts whatever operation the robots are running and causes the lieutenant to spawn and attack. The fights are straightforward solo encounters appropriate for the zone level.

Upon quest completion, Jinky remarks: “Wow, you survived! I guess all that’s left to do now is to deal with Gearmaster Mechazod.”

Easter Eggs: Pop Culture Robot References

Each robot name references classic science fiction:

ED-210 — RoboCop (1987)

The most direct reference. ED-209 is the malfunctioning enforcement droid from Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop. The robot famously failed to recognize when a test subject dropped his weapon and gunned him down, becoming both a menacing villain and source of dark comedy. WoW’s version is “ED-210,” one model number higher.

Twonky — “The Twonky” (1942/1953)

“Twonky” comes from a 1942 science fiction short story by Henry Kuttner and C.L. Moore (writing as Lewis Padgett), later adapted into a 1953 film. In the story, a “twonky” is a device from an authoritarian future designed to “help” its owner while secretly controlling their behavior. The term has since entered sci-fi fandom as slang for any gadget that’s overly complicated or malfunctioning.

Max Blasto & The Grinder

Less certain references. “Max Blasto” may be a generic sci-fi robot name evoking ray guns and explosions. “The Grinder” has been suggested as a possible reference to the Judas Priest song, though this is speculative.

Quest Title: “Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty”

This is a mnemonic from real-world mechanics training, used to remember which direction to turn screws and bolts (left to loosen, right to tighten). Fitting for a quest about turning valves at a gnomish pumping station.

Warrior IconVikstone's War Journal

Jinky pointed to her map. “Twonky, ED-210, Max Blasto, and The Grinder. West, north, mid, and south stations. Turn the valves to mess up whatever they’re doing out there. They’ll come running.”

Vikstone Portrait Act 1
Illustrated by Christian DiBari and Simon Gough.

I worked my way through them one station at a time.

Twonky was all sparks and fury, quick but fragile. ED-210 was the opposite: hulking, slow, hit like a siege engine. I let it overextend, then took it apart at the joints. Max Blasto, aptly named, fired explosive charges that cratered the ground where I’d been standing. Closed the distance before he could reload. The Grinder was the ugliest, with spinning blades and grinding gears. Took a nick on my forearm before I found the gap in its chassis.

Four valves turned, four lieutenants in pieces.

When I returned with oil and sparks drying on my arms, Jinky looked genuinely surprised. “Wow, you survived! I guess all that’s left now is to deal with Gearmaster Mechazod.”

The easy part was over.

The last thing standing between the gnomes and their freedom was The Gearmaster himself.
