Step 1: Find Counselor Talbot
Counselor Talbot is located inside Valiance Keep’s command room in the barracks building. He becomes available as a quest giver after you complete Notify Arlos.
Step 2: Travel to Karuk
Head southwest from Valiance Keep to Riplash Strand. Karuk is on a slightly raised hill near the beach at [47, 75].
Step 3: Speak to Karuk
Simply speak with Karuk to complete the quest and begin his questline.
Prerequisite Chain (Valiance Keep Cultists)
To unlock this quest, complete the ship investigation chain:
After completing Notify Arlos, both this quest and Enemies of the Light become available in the command room.
Story Context: Sent Away on Purpose
Counselor Talbot (quest text): “I see that you are very eager to help, <name>. You didn’t come all the way to Northrend to stay holed up in a city! I’ve just the task for you… something that’ll take you far away from here.”
“We’ve long sought to gain the favor of the tuskarr native to Northrend. Recently a young tuskarr came to us seeking help, something we couldn’t offer at the time.”
“Now that you’re around, maybe you can lend him a hand. Look for Karuk near the Riplash Strand, southwest of here, and see what you can do to help.”
Karuk (completion): “You’ve come to my aid? I thank you, <name>.”
Notice how Talbot emphasizes sending you “far away from here.” This seemingly innocent phrasing becomes sinister in hindsight…
Lore: The Counselor’s True Identity
Counselor Talbot is not what he appears to be. He’s actually Prince Valanar, a San’layn (darkfallen) blood prince and the Scourge overlord of the Borean Tundra. He rules from Naxxanar, a necropolis above the Temple City of En’kilah, while simultaneously infiltrating Valiance Keep to manipulate the Alliance from within.
Talbot’s advice to General Arlos is deliberately designed to weaken the Alliance position. When you report cultist activity, Arlos dismisses it because “Counselor Talbot assures me that this was an isolated incident.” By sending eager adventurers like you away on distant errands, Valanar keeps capable fighters distracted from his machinations.
His true identity is eventually exposed in the quest Last Rites, where the death knight Thassarian confronts and defeats him at Naxxanar.
Combat Note: If Horde players attack Talbot in Valiance Keep, he uses three powerful spells (Soul Blast, Soul Deflection, Vampiric Bolt) that are far stronger than his level suggests.
Alliance vs. Horde: Different Breadcrumbs
This quest is the Alliance version of the breadcrumb to Karuk. Horde players receive Seek Out Karuk! from Waltor of Pal’ea at [32, 54] instead. Both quests lead to the same content: Karuk’s questline at Riplash Strand.
Easter Egg: Star Wars Reference
“You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor!” This is a direct reference to Darth Vader’s famous line to Princess Leia in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977).

Something about the way he said it, like sending me away served a purpose I wasn’t meant to understand.
“We’ve long sought to gain the favor of the tuskarr native to Northrend,” Talbot said. “Recently a young tuskarr came to us seeking help. Something we couldn’t offer at the time. Now that you’re around, maybe you can lend him a hand. Look for Karuk near the Riplash Strand, southwest of here.”
Diplomacy. Building alliances with the locals while the Scourge pressed from all sides. It made sense, Talbot always made sense.
I found Karuk on the strand where the waves carved ice from stone. A young tuskarr, waiting alone where the naga territory began.
“You’ve come to my aid?” He straightened when he saw me. “I thank you.”
Whatever trouble had brought him to the Alliance’s doorstep, Valiance Keep had sent him away with promises. Now I was here to make good on them.
Whatever had brought a young tuskarr to the Alliance’s doorstep was bad enough that he asked strangers for help, so Seek Out Karuk!
