Wanted: Ragemane’s Flipper

Objective: Kill Ragemane at Rageclaw Lake and return his flipper to Chief Rageclaw.

Walkthrough

Finding Ragemane

• Pick up this quest from the Wanted Poster board at Light’s Breach. No prerequisites required, just level 74.
• Head southeast to Rageclaw Lake [38, 84]. Ragemane is a level 75 elite lion seal swimming in the water. He has roughly 100-110k HP.

Fighting Ragemane

• Ragemane is a straightforward tank-and-spank fight, but a long one due to his massive health pool. His abilities:
  • Charge: He can close distance quickly, including following you out of the water.
  • Flipper Thwack: A melee attack that increases his damage by 120.
  • Enrage: Triggers around 20-25% HP, increasing attack speed by 30% and physical damage by 10%. This is the danger window.
• He is immune to stuns. He can (and will) follow you extremely long distances if you try to run, so commit to the fight.
• Respawn warning: Ragemane respawns very quickly (roughly 20 seconds). Move away from his spawn point after looting.

Soloing vs. Grouping

• Labeled as a 3-player group quest, but soloable by tank-specced characters (Protection Paladins, Protection Warriors, Blood/Frost DKs, Feral Druids in bear form) at level 74-76 with decent gear.
• Non-tank specs will have a much harder time. Warlocks with a Felguard or Voidwalker tanking can manage, and Hunters with a tanky pet can attempt it, though pet survivability during enrage is dicey.
• If you can’t solo it, this is a quick fight to find a partner for. Even one extra player makes it trivial.
• Consumables help: Stamina food, armor elixirs, and a Runic Health Potion for the enrage phase can make the difference for solo attempts.

Efficiency Tips

• Grab this quest alongside the other Light’s Breach quests (“Trolls Is Gone Crazy!“, “This Just In: Fire Still Hot!“, “In Search of Answers“) and complete them all in a single trip to the Rageclaw Den area. Ragemane is at the lake just east of the den.
• Tanks, prioritize this quest. Three of the four rewards are tanking weapons, and they are among the best pre-heroic tanking options in WotLK. The mace is generally considered the strongest all-around choice for Paladin and Warrior tanks (Defense + Dodge + highest DPS). The axe is excellent for Orc tanks due to Axe Specialization granting bonus Expertise.
• Feral Druids should grab the Staff of the Sorrowful Chieftain. It replaces both your DPS and tanking weapon in one shot and won’t be outclassed until level 80 dungeon drops.

Lore Context

Ragemane is not a wolvar. He’s a lion seal, Chief Rageclaw’s beloved pet, raised from a pup. He was a gift from the Chief’s brother-in-law.

The Drakuru trolls drove Ragemane mad when they attacked Rageclaw Den. The Chief, heartbroken, posts the Wanted notice asking adventurers to put Ragemane down and return his flipper as proof. The quest text is written in Chief Rageclaw’s broken Common and is one of WotLK’s most emotionally effective comedy moments. He even apologizes for his handwriting: “Chief Rageclaw sorry for bad writing. First time use one of these things; plus, Chief Rageclaw is wolvar, not person.”

Note the reward names: Hammer of Quiet Mourning, Staff of the Sorrowful Chieftain, Crescent of Brooding Fury, Sword of Heartwrenching Slaughter. Every weapon name reflects Chief Rageclaw’s grief over having to order his own pet killed.

Easter Eggs

• Arrested Development reference. The premise of a seal that “bite hand that feed him,” combined with the quest objective of recovering the seal’s flipper, mirrors the famous Arrested Development storyline where Buster Bluth’s hand is bitten off by a “loose seal”.
