Thorim’s Plan
Thorim explains that he released Veranus back into the wild years ago, and she returned to lead her own brood. She’s described as a “broodmother in name only,” too old to breed, but she still maintains her empty nest out of pride.
Thorim’s plan is to place stolen eggs in her nest to lure her back, exploiting her maternal instincts. It’s a clever plan with a bittersweet edge: he’s manipulating the one creature that was truly loyal to him.
Veranus and the Razorscale Connection
This is one of WotLK’s most effective narrative setups, and many players completing the quest don’t realize the payoff until they enter Ulduar.
After Thorim successfully reclaims Veranus (in the next quest, Territorial Trespass), both he and the proto-drake are captured by Loken during The Reckoning. Loken brings them to Ulduar, where Veranus is handed over to Ignis the Furnace Master, who fuses iron plates onto her scales.
She becomes Razorscale, an early boss in the Ulduar raid.
The Razorscale loot table serves as a grim reminder: Veranus’ Bane, Eye of the Broodmother, and Bracers of the Broodmother all reference who she was before Loken’s cruelty stripped her identity away. Players who helped Thorim reclaim his beloved mount are now forced to fight and kill what she became.

His voice softened with something like regret.
“Finding her will be hard, but perhaps there’s a way. She keeps her old empty nest out of pure pride. She’s a broodmother in name only, for she is beyond the age of breeding. Bring me small eggs from the other nests near Brunnhildar. I think I’ve an idea.”
I had the idea before he finished laying it out.
In Sholazar Basin a man named Dorian had me break open primordial drake eggs in the Savage Thicket and carry off the hatchlings in a sack, for the sole purpose of bringing their mother out to fight. I put her down from a mammoth’s back with Hemet Nesingwary firing over my shoulder, and her head went up on a post at the camp.
The nests are on the peaks south of Brunnhildar. The drakes minding them were territorial and not stupid, and they gave ground when I came up the rock with the mace out. I took five and left the rest of each clutch where it lay.
“Yes… these will do,” Thorim said. “Let us hope my plan works. Veranus is a great drake. I’d hate to have to settle for a lesser one.”
The eggs went into an empty nest that had not held any in years, and something was going to come back to find out who had been in it, which counted as Territorial Trespass.
