“I shall speak plainly to you, little Night Elf. My people have not been the same since our ties with Thorim were severed. As their leader, I wish nothing more than for their hearts to be mended and our friendship with the Stormlord to be renewed. In your defeat of Fjorn, a step has been taken down that path. I would have you bring us a step further…
In the Halls of Lightning, one even greater than Fjorn sits in opposition to our existence. Volkhan will not rest until either he, or we, are no more.”

Quick Facts
Walkthrough
This quest shares a dungeon with Whatever it Takes!, so pick up both from King Jokkum before flying to the Halls of Lightning entrance at approximately [45.4, 21.4] in northern Storm Peaks.
Volkhan is the second boss of four in Halls of Lightning. You will reach him after clearing General Bjarngrim (first boss) and heading right into the Iron Crucible area. He stands at his anvil in a forge room.
Volkhan is a fire giant and forgemaster. The fight revolves around managing his Molten Golem adds:
| Ability | Effect | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Temper | Volkhan runs to his anvil and strikes it, creating Molten Golems. Triggers at every 20% HP threshold. | Tank picks up the golems immediately. DPS switches to burn them down. |
| Heat | Volkhan heals a Molten Golem for 20% of its max HP. | Focus fire golems before he can heal them back up. |
| Molten Golem: Immolation Strike | Golems burn a random player for Fire damage plus a 9-second DoT. | Healers watch for fire DoT ticking on non-tanks. |
| Molten Golem: Cool Down | Golems lose 1-2% HP per second over time and slow down as they cool. At 1% HP, they freeze into Brittle Golems (inactive). | Don’t stand near frozen golem corpses. |
| Shattering Stomp | At 25% HP, Volkhan stomps the ground, shattering all Brittle Golems. Each shatter deals Physical damage to players within 10 yards of the golem. | Move away from any frozen golems before he reaches 25%. The more golems that have accumulated, the more dangerous this is. |
Strategy Summary: Tank Volkhan near his anvil. When he runs to forge new golems, pick them up and burn them quickly.
As the fight progresses, frozen golem corpses accumulate on the ground. Before Volkhan hits 25% HP, make sure nobody is standing near frozen golems, because Shattering Stomp will detonate them all simultaneously. In later WotLK phases with higher gear, groups often ignored golem management and just burned Volkhan before the shatter mattered.
Heroic Achievement: Shatter Resistant requires defeating Volkhan on Heroic without allowing him to shatter more than 4 Brittle Golems. This means aggressively killing golems before they cool down and freeze, or burning Volkhan so fast that fewer golem waves spawn.
After Killing Volkhan: The quest completion triggers automatically on Volkhan’s death. Continue through the dungeon to Ionar (third boss) and Loken (final boss) to complete Whatever it Takes! in the same run.
Lore Context
The quest title “Diametrically Opposed” refers to the elemental conflict between fire and frost. Volkhan is a fire giant. The Sons of Hodir are frost giants. Jokkum frames this as an existential threat: “Volkhan will not rest until either he, or we, are no more.” Fire and frost, creation and preservation, locked in irreconcilable opposition.
Jokkum’s quest text references Fjorn, the fire giant you defeated earlier in the Sons of Hodir chain (the Mending Fences quest, where you use Fjorn’s anvil to create a new head for the Hodir monument). Jokkum says Volkhan is “even greater than Fjorn,” positioning this as an escalation. You beat the lesser fire giant in the overworld; now you face the master forgesmith in his own lair.
Volkhan was created by Loken and served as his chief weapon-maker. Volkhan and Ignis (the Ulduar raid boss) were partners. Together they forged the iron armies, enslaved proto-dragon flights as beasts of war, and drove the earthen from their refuges.
Volkhan built the golems; Ignis built the weapons and armor. The Halls of Lightning was essentially Volkhan’s factory floor.

Vikstone's War Journal“I shall speak plainly to you, little night elf,” Jokkum said. “My people have not been the same since our ties with Thorim were severed. As their leader, I wish nothing more than for their hearts to be mended and our friendship with the Stormlord to be renewed. In your defeat of Fjorn, a step has been taken down that path. I would have you bring us a step further. In the Halls of Lightning, one even greater than Fjorn sits in opposition to our existence. Volkhan will not rest until either he, or we, are no more. We only want peace, but it seems we have no choice but war.”
We went back into the Halls two days after killing Loken.

Volkhan was still working.
“The armies of iron will conquer all!”
That is the part I have not been able to get past. His master was dead. I cut the tongue out of the man myself and watched a frost giant king close his fist on it. And down in the Iron Crucible the forge was still lit and the fire giant was still turning out soldiers for an army that no longer has anybody to command it, because nobody had gone down and told him.
“The armies of iron will conquer all!”
He struck the anvil and his children came up out of the molten metal, glowing orange, coming at us with their hands alight.
“Life from lifelessness… death for you.”
They cannot be fought where they stand. Close in, the heat takes the skin off a man, so you give ground and let them come to you, and as they come they cool. Orange to red to dull iron. The mage put frost on them to hurry it, and by the time they arrive they have gone brittle and one good blow opens them.
“It is you who have destroyed my children? You… shall… pay!”
Then he struck the anvil again.
He makes them, we cool them, we break them, he makes more. What matters is where the broken ones are standing when he raises his foot, because the Shattering Stomp turns every brittle golem in the room into shrapnel, and the two of us who were slow about that wore a fair amount of it home.
“I will crush you beneath my boots!”
He got no further than that.
“All my work… undone!”
The forge went out on its own once he stopped.
“Volkhan shall haunt the dreams of my people no more,” Jokkum said. “Continue your efforts, little night elf. In time, I am certain my people will grow to forgive Thorim.”
One less enemy for the Sons of Hodir. One less forge churning out soldiers for a dead master’s army.
Jokkum counted Volkhan as one more step toward the day his people might forgive Thorim, and the next step ran back through Thunderfall, where the ones who died beside their king were still lying under the ice, waiting for someone to gather what remained of them In Memoriam.
