The ore is never identified in this quest, but later in the chain, Attendant Tock at Mimir’s Workshop analyzes the material and reveals it to be an alloy of saronite and iron. That Bouldercrag (an earthen, a titan-forged creature of stone) physically cannot touch it speaks to how deeply corrupted the material is.
Saronite is the crystallized blood of the Old God Yogg-Saron, and its presence in Loken’s mining operations hints at the full depth of his corruption.
This connects to the broader WotLK theme of saronite appearing wherever Yogg-Saron’s influence reaches: the Saronite Mines beneath Icecrown Citadel, the Pit of Saronite in the Pit of Saron dungeon, and the saronite veins throughout Northrend that players mine for crafting materials.
Here, it’s being weaponized to forge the stormforged army’s armor.

Cartloads. They have been running that seam at volume for long enough that the earthen have watched the carts come out and never once been able to get close enough to see what was in them.
The ore carts stand all through the mine. The stuff in them is dark and veined and I knew what it was the moment I put a hand on it, because I have carried five pieces of it before.
That was in Crystalweb Cavern, weeks ago, for a goblin who wanted to calibrate machines against it. I wrote at the time that it never warmed in the pack against my back, and that the Scourge sheathe their dead in this metal.
Five samples, wrapped, and carried at arm’s length where I could manage it.
Bouldercrag put a hand out for them and pulled it back before he had touched anything. “That ore… I can’t touch it. It seethes with unnatural energy. No creature of stone can handle it. What do they mean to do with this?”
Bouldercrag could not hold the samples long enough to study them and did not need to, because he already knew what a forge running on that ore was producing, and the armour coming off it was among The Gifts of Loken.
