Quest Giver: Avatar of Freya at Rainspeaker Rapids, Sholazar Basin [64.5, 48.7]

Objective: Defeat Thalgran Blightbringer by using Freya’s Ward to reflect his Deathbolts back at him.

Quick Facts

• Quest Chain: Force of Nature > An Issue of Trust > Returned Sevenfold > The Fallen Pillar + Salvaging Life’s Strength
• Thalgran’s Location: [66.7, 44.1], just north of the Avatar, right at the falls. Look beneath the triangle formation of floating mini-necropolises.

Thalgran’s Abilities

• Melee: Standard staff attacks. Moderate damage.
• Rain of Fire: AoE fire damage on the ground. Not interruptable. Move out of the fire circle when you see it.
• Deathbolt: 9,500-10,500 Shadow damage. This is the ability you must reflect using Freya’s Ward. At level 77-78, an unreflected Deathbolt will likely kill or nearly kill most classes.

How to Use Freya’s Ward (Step-by-Step)

1. Aggro Thalgran and let him come to you. He will cycle between melee hits, Rain of Fire, and Deathbolt.
2. Move out of Rain of Fire whenever he casts it. Use this downtime to heal or bandage.
3. Watch for the Deathbolt cast. He brings his hands close to his right side, and shadowy orbs begin forming around them. If you have target cast bars enabled (Interface > Combat > Target Cast Bar), you will see his cast bar fill up.
4. Activate Freya’s Ward when his Deathbolt cast bar is past the halfway point. The ward is a channeled spell, so you must stand still and cannot cast anything else while it’s active.
5. The reflected Deathbolt deals massive damage back to Thalgran. Most report 3 successful reflections to kill him.
6. Repeat until dead. The ward’s cooldown is short enough to be ready for each Deathbolt cast.

Warning: Pet Classes (Hunters, Warlocks, Unholy DKs)

• Freya’s Ward only works if Thalgran casts Deathbolt at you personally. If the Deathbolt targets your pet or minion, the reflection fails entirely.
• Dismiss your pet or set it to Passive before engaging.
• Hunters: Use Distracting Shot to ensure Thalgran targets you, not your pet. It’s technically possible to brute-force DPS him without the ward, but this is not reliable for most players at-level.
• Warlocks: Dismiss your minion entirely, too.

Additional Class Tips

• Frost Mages: Do NOT use Ice Barrier. It may interfere with your ward, causing you to take the Deathbolt instead of reflecting it.
• Melee Classes: Thalgran hits moderately hard in melee. Consider stepping back to range after each melee exchange to give yourself room to react to casts. He hits for about 1100 damage on cloth.
• All Classes: Enable Target Cast Bars (Interface > Combat) if you haven’t already. This is the single most helpful UI change for this fight.
• Audio Cue: The Deathbolt has a distinctive “shadow bolt” sound effect. If you learn to recognize the audio, you can react without relying solely on the cast bar.

Lore Context

The quest title “Returned Sevenfold” is a biblical reference, not a reference to the band Avenged Sevenfold. The phrase describes retribution multiplied seven times, from Genesis 4:15 and Psalm 79:12. The band itself drew its name from the same source. The Avatar of Freya’s quest text: “All harm they inflict will be returned to them sevenfold.”

Thalgran Blightbringer is a vargul, an undead construct created from vrykul. The vargul are vrykul who were deemed unworthy by the Lich King and raised as mindless undead servants, a fate considered shameful by vrykul culture. Thalgran being “directly responsible for corrupting the land” makes him a significant Scourge commander in the basin.

The completion text reveals a shift in the Avatar’s attitude. She admits “Perhaps I was too quick to judge you” and references the Nesingwary expedition as “poachers who were recently stranded in my lands.”

From the Avatar’s perspective, the hunters are no different from the Scourge: both are invaders disrupting the titan-designed ecosystem. Your willingness to fight the Scourge is what separates you from the “poachers.”
