Walkthrough
While you’re here: Complete Salvaging Life’s Strength in the surrounding area. That quest requires killing Lifeblood Elementals and using a Lifeblood Gem on their corpses to collect lifeforce. The elementals roam the base and slopes of the Lifeblood Pillar.
Lore Context
This is one of the most important lore quests in Sholazar Basin. The Avatar of Freya’s quest text establishes the core tragedy of the zone: “The titans shaped entire life forms here, fostering their unfettered growth. The five crystal pillars that surround the basin emanate pure lifeforce. The Scourge should’ve never been able to penetrate the basin, but one of the pillars was destroyed.”
The critical detail is her warning: “No undead would’ve been able to approach the pillar, so keep your eyes out for living intruders.” The Scourge couldn’t destroy the pillar themselves because the lifeforce emanations would destroy them. They needed living agents: the Cult of the Damned, mortal followers of the Lich King who could carry powder kegs past the pillar’s defenses.
The powder kegs you discover at the Cultist Corpse tell the whole story. It wasn’t some great magical assault that broke Sholazar’s defenses. It was sabotage: living cultists hauling barrels of explosives to the base of a titan structure and blowing it up. The cultist died in the blast, burned by his own work.
When the Lifeblood Pillar fell, snow from Icecrown collapsed into the basin through the breach, creating The Avalanche, and the Scourge poured through the gap. The entire eastern portion of the zone, now called the Lost Lands, is blighted and dying because of this single act of sabotage.
The top half of the broken pillar, made of glowing red crystal, landed nearby and is now known as The Sundered Shard. This becomes important later: Artruis the Heartless, the lich commanding the Scourge forces in Sholazar, makes his lair inside the Sundered Shard.

Flew south. What was left of the pillar stood maybe half the height it should have, the rest of it scattered down the slope in pieces. Red crystal fragments still hummed faintly with power even in ruin.
Found the corpse near the top. Badly burnt, barely recognizable. Around it, the remains of several powder kegs.
Someone had simply walked up here with black powder and lit it. Someone living, who could stand where no undead could, because the pillar’s lifeforce had no quarrel with a beating heart.
The five pillars had protected Sholazar since the titans shaped it. Now one lay broken, and everything the titans had built this place to keep out was walking through the gap.
I stood there among the debris, understanding dawning cold and clear. The undead hadn’t breached Sholazar’s defenses. They’d found someone to do it for them.
Freya needed to know. She’d been looking for the wrong enemy.
The cultist who blew the pillar had not come to Sholazar alone, and whatever was left of his order was still somewhere in the basin, still working, in Cultist Incursion.
