The more intelligent Scourge. So there are enough of those to have required a policy.
“I require that you assist me in the construction of a new one. Luckily for you, all of the necessary components are at hand: a cultist rod, an abomination hook, a geist rope, and a handful of Scourge essences. This should not be difficult. When you’ve managed to acquire that which I have asked of you, I will fashion the device, with a few modifications for our purposes, and we’ll be on with our business.”
A few modifications. Our purposes. He did not elaborate on either.
The cultists keep to the altars below the vault and they do not post a watch, because until three days ago there was an eye over the whole of that ground doing it for them. I came in from the side of the altar and it was done before the second one had turned around. The rod he wanted was in that one’s belt.
The abomination took longer. Its hook was sunk through its own shoulder plate, which is how they carry them, and I cut it out of the thing after it stopped moving. I have raised a dozen of these with Thassarian’s kit and put them back on their feet and pointed them at people. This is the first time I have taken one apart for parts.
Geists are quick and they are not brave. Three of them went before the fourth understood the situation, and the rope came off that one.
The essences lift out of a corpse on their own if you stand still long enough afterward, pale and slow, and they do not go anywhere. They wait to be taken. I filled a pouch and did not enjoy the filling.
“Quickly, hand them to me and stay out of sight! The rod, the hook, and the rope are all very self-evident in their usage when combined. I just need to infuse the result with the essences and we’ll be ready to proceed.”
Stay out of sight. He said that in the middle of a Scourge encampment, having been standing among them for however many weeks it has been.
That man’s whole life at present is the pretence that he is still a slave. And the first thing he wants back, the very first, is the tool his old masters used to hold the leash.
Sliver’s rod was built to make Scourge obey, and the modifications he had quietly worked into it pointed the other way entirely, toward whatever was left inside those things that could still be reached, which is what it means to Free Your Mind.
