The Guardians of Corp’rethar

Quest 4 of 4 in the Corp'rethar Approach Chain (Finale) Group Quest
Both Factions • Icecrown • Level 80 • The Skybreaker
Kill 5 Harbingers of Horror and 5 Corp'rethar Guardians.
Both types patrol the ramparts of the Horror Gate, south of the Ironwall Rampart past the glacier and the Conflagration. The Harbingers knock you off the wall and the Guardians stack a healing debuff with no cap. Fight the first away from any edge and kill the second fast, because a long fight against a Guardian is one you lose slowly. Pull singles, never both types together, and clear the patrol paths before you commit.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
Wopak caught his arm before the first Harbinger's backhand took him over the edge, and paid for a later save with a forearm he did not mention until the fifth Guardian was down. Calvey stood at the battlement afterward looking at the Citadel and said it was right there, without a joke attached.

“Corp’rethar, called the Horror Gate. It is the last barrier between us and the Icecrown Citadel. It waits to the south of the Ironwall Rampart, beyond the glacier and the Conflagration. By the time our troops reach it, they will be exhausted and worse. We must weaken its defenses, or our army’s strength will break upon its walls. Its battlements are manned by some of the Lich King’s fiercest and most zealous servants.

Do all you can to destroy these guardians and hope it is enough.”

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: Thassarian (Alliance, aboard The Skybreaker)/Koltira Deathweaver (Horde, aboard Orgrim’s Hammer)

Objective: Kill 5 Harbingers of Horror and 5 Corp’rethar Guardians on the ramparts of Corp’rethar: The Horror Gate.

Quick Facts

  • Suggested Players: 5 (soloable with Naxx-level gear or better)
  • Location: Ramparts of Corp’rethar [50, 67]
  • Chain Position: Before the Gate of Horror → The Guardians of Corp’rethar (given alongside Shatter the Shards)

Walkthrough

Reach the Corp’rethar Ramparts

  • Fly to Corp’rethar: The Horror Gate, south of the Ironwall Rampart. Both enemy types are found all along the ramparts, both upper and lower levels. There is no strict separation of mob types by floor.

Kill 5 Harbingers + 5 Guardians

  • Both mob types are level 80 Elites with approximately 88,200 HP each. These are legitimate group-difficulty elites, unlike the “suggested 5” quests earlier in the chain that were easily soloable. The fights here take longer and hit harder.
  • Both enemy types are spread throughout the rampart structure. Pull carefully and fight one at a time. A slow-patrolling elite walks the full length of the wall and should be avoided or fought only when you are at full health and cooldowns.

Harbingers of Horror (Liches)

Ability Effect Notes
Frostbolt Frost damage + movement slow for 4 sec Interruptable; Spell Reflect does NOT work on this
Chill Nova AoE Frost damage + knockback + movement slow for 5 sec Primary knockback danger; can punt you off the ramparts
Lich Slap 307 Frost damage + knockback Melee-range knockback; second source of displacement
Fear Single-target fear, up to 8 sec Only one target at a time; can send you running into other mobs
Frost Armor 30-minute self-buff; increases armor, slows melee attackers Makes them tougher to melee; slows your attack speed on hit

  • Harbingers are the more dangerous of the two mob types due to the double knockback (Chill Nova + Lich Slap) and Fear. Always fight with your back to the inner wall, never near the edge. Getting knocked off the rampart forces you to fly back up and re-engage.
  • They can be feared, snared, interrupted, and frozen. Immune to Spell Reflect on Frostbolt specifically.

Corp’rethar Guardians (Plague-dogs)

Ability Effect Notes
Mortal Wound Reduces healing effectiveness by 10% per stack Stacks indefinitely (not capped at 5); similar to Gluth’s debuff
Infected Bite Nature DoT + increases physical damage taken for 15 sec Amplifies all subsequent melee damage you take

  • Guardians are the bigger threat for self-healing classes. Mortal Wound stacks without limit, meaning the longer the fight goes, the less effective your heals become. At 5+ stacks you are healing for half or less.
  • Kill them fast. The stacking healing debuff punishes slow fights. Burn cooldowns to drop them before Mortal Wound accumulates.
  • As of patch 9.0.1, Corp’rethar Guardians became tamable by Hunters. In WotLK Classic they are not tamable.

Strategy

Positioning Is Everything

  • The rampart has exposed edges on both sides. Harbinger knockbacks (Chill Nova and Lich Slap) can throw you off the wall entirely. Fight against the inner wall, away from edges. If you get feared into other mobs, the chain pulls can be fatal.

Pull Order

  • Clear Guardians first where possible. They are melee-only and more predictable. Save Harbingers for when you have interrupts and stuns available.
  • Pull mobs one at a time using ranged abilities or line-of-sight around the rampart’s pillars and corners.

Solo Tips by Role

  • Melee (Warriors, DKs, Rogues, Ret Paladins): Interrupt Harbinger Frostbolts with kicks and stuns. Position against walls for knockback safety. Against Guardians, burn fast before Mortal Wound stacks get dangerous. A PvP trinket helps break Fear.
  • Casters (Mages, Warlocks, Shadow Priests): Harbingers can be crowd-controlled extensively (Fear, Polymorph, Frost Nova, etc.). Kite Guardians to avoid Mortal Wound stacks. Shadow Priests can Shackle Undead on Harbingers for easy CC.
  • Hunters: Freezing Trap one mob, burn the other. Use a DPS pet rather than a tanking pet, as the Guardian’s stacking healing debuff will make Mend Pet progressively weaker. Concussive Shot helps kite Guardians.
  • Paladins: Turn Evil works on Harbingers of Horror (undead liches), giving Paladins a strong CC option. Use it to isolate targets. Shadow Resistance Aura is less useful here since the primary damage is Frost, not Shadow.
  • Shamans: Tremor Totem counters the Harbinger’s Fear. Purge does not remove Frost Armor. Frost Resistance Totem helps mitigate Frostbolt and Chill Nova damage.

Group Tips

  • With 2-3 players this is straightforward. Tank positions against wall, DPS interrupts Harbinger casts, healer watches for Mortal Wound stacks and dispels Infected Bite.
  • Their Mortal Strike effect stacks without a cap, in the manner of Gluth in Naxxramas. A drawn-out fight against one becomes unwinnable rather than merely slow, so kill them quickly or swap targets.
  • In a full group, pull two mobs at a time and AoE. Assign one player to interrupt duty on Harbinger casts.

Efficiency Tips

  • Complete this alongside Shatter the Shards. Both quests share the same location and you will naturally clear Guardians and Harbingers on the way to each crystal shard. Plan your route to hit shards while killing your 5-and-5 quota.
  • This is the final quest in the Thassarian/Koltira Aldur’thar progression chain. There are no follow-up quests after this and Shatter the Shards.

Lore Context

Corp’rethar: The Horror Gate is the last barrier between the combined forces and Icecrown Citadel itself. The quest text frames this as a reconnaissance-in-force: weaken the gate’s defenders so the full army knows what to expect when the real assault begins. The Harbingers of Horror are liches stationed as magical sentries, while the Corp’rethar Guardians are plague-dogs bred specifically for defending fortifications.

Both Thassarian and Koltira acknowledge that the Lich King will not sit idle as the assault approaches the gates of his stronghold. This sets the stage for the Icecrown Citadel raid itself.

And hope it is enough. That is three of them now. Lankral hoped burning banners could not hurt. Thassarian did not know whether his acid would work. Now this.

Same crew as the shards. We knew the footing.

Calvey had not smiled since the crystals. She came anyway, bow strung, her cat against her leg.

The Harbingers do not hit hard so much as they hit you off. The first one caught me with a backhand and I was over the parapet before I understood I had been struck, and Wopak had my arm, and then he was past me and into it while I got my feet back under me.

The Guardians are the other problem.

They are faster, they cover one another, and they test you before they commit. But what they do is cut in a way that does not heal. Every one that lands makes the next mending less, and it does not wear off, and it does not stop accumulating. Past a certain number of those, Hibiscus cannot hold you up no matter what she pours in, and the only question is whether the thing dies before you reach that number.

On the first, Wopak took a blow across his shield that was meant for Hibiscus. He did not mention the forearm until the fifth was down.

On the fourth, Calvey ran out of arrows and drew her skinning knife.

We reached the end of the ramparts with all four of us upright.

Afterward Wopak sat with his arm across his knee and Hibiscus knelt and worked on it, and Calvey stood at the edge looking south with a hand on the cat’s head.

“It’s right there,” she said.

It is. From that wall it is not a shape on the horizon any more.

“I hope your success at Corp’rethar will prove an omen of the battle ahead. The Lich King cannot sit idly by as we march to the very gates of his stronghold.”

The Horror Gate was weakened and Thassarian had already said what came next, that the Lich King would not sit still while an army walked up to his door, and the first sign of it was a shift in who was giving orders at Aldur’thar, a Chain of Command.
