Walkthrough

Get to Rivenwood

• Head north from Steel Gate into the Rivenwood, the spider-infested forest south of Gjalerbron. The area starts around [30, 21].

Scare the Bats

• Put Feknut’s Firecrackers on your action bar. Look up in the trees for Darkclaw Bats hanging from branches.
• Stand near the base of a tree with bats and use the Firecrackers on the ground. A bat will fly down, drop a pile of Darkclaw Guano, and aggro you.
• Targeting tip: If you’re having trouble getting the Firecrackers to work, aim at the bat’s shadow on the ground rather than directly beneath the tree. Some bats are bugged and won’t come down, regardless; just move to the next tree.

Collect the Guano

• The guano spawns on the ground near where you threw the Firecrackers. Kill or deal with the bat, then loot the guano. Repeat for 10 total.

Bat Behavior Notes

• Each bat only drops guano once. If someone else scared it and grabbed the drop without killing the bat, that bat is “spent” until it respawns.
• Not every firecracker toss produces guano. Tossing Firecrackers at random (even between trees) can produce guano roughly one in three attempts, which can actually be faster than hunting for bats visually.
• Avoid trees with Riven Widow Cocoons directly beneath them. Bats above cocoons don’t reliably drop guano.

Efficiency Tips

• Best spot: [29.8, 17.8] has a high concentration of bats with minimal spider aggro. The trees along the south road (~[30, 21]) are also safer, with fewer Riven Widows nearby.
• Pet classes (Hunters, Warlocks): Set your pet to Stay or Passive and approach trees alone. If your pet pulls spiders while you’re mid-firecracker, it complicates the loot window.
• Stealth classes: Rogues can Sap the bat (Darkclaw Bats are Beasts), grab the guano, and move on. Druids/Rogues can also re-stealth after the bat flies down to drop combat before it reaches you.
• Hunters specifically: Firecracker, let the bat come down, Feign Death. The bat resets and flies back up, leaving the guano on the ground. You can repeat this with the same tree’s respawns.
• On busy servers: Other players can grab your guano while you’re fighting the bat. Kill the bat fast or use crowd control before looting. Stuns work well since the bat dies in a few hits anyway.

Lore Context

• Feknut is Bombardier Petrov’s assistant, sent up from Westguard Keep to collect bat guano for cluster bomb manufacturing. Petrov uses those bombs in the daily quest Break the Blockade, where you fly a zeppelin over the Northsea Freebooters in the Shattered Straits and bomb their ships. Petrov’s completion text even references Feknut: “My assistant, Feknut, isn’t back from collecting more bat guano for them.”
• Feknut is terrified of Rivenwood. His ambient dialogue cycles through complaints: “There’s no way I’m going into the Rivenwood; the place is haunted!” and “This place was supposed to be safe!” He refuses to leave the Steel Gate platform, which is why he sends you instead.
• The Darkclaw Guano item tooltip reads: “Ammonia, uric, phosphoric, oxalic, and carbonic acids. Mmm, all the good stuff!” Real bat guano does contain these compounds and has been used historically in gunpowder and fertilizer production.
• This quest is part of WoW’s long-running tradition of “poo quests,” a running joke in the community since Nagrand’s “The Ring of Blood” era. Other entries include the infamous Doing Your Duty in Grizzly Hills.
