Put on Your Best Face for Loken

Quest 3 of 3 in the Overseer Disguise Chain (Finale)
Alliance • Grizzly Hills • Level 75 • Dun Argol
Use the Overseer Disguise Kit, walk to the pedestal at [81, 60] inside Dun Argol, and receive Loken's message.
The disguise makes all Dun Argol enemies friendly. Mount first, then disguise. Mounting while disguised cancels it. Taking any damage (including fall damage) also removes it. The pedestal is in the easternmost building on the middle tier. Click it, stand still for Loken's full speech, get credit. Don't turn in yet. The disguise kit stays usable while the quest is active. Finish Blackout and The Iron Thane first, then turn in all three together.
Vikstone's Classic Expedition
A night elf disguised as an iron dwarf, standing at a pedestal built for titan-forged, listening to Loken issue orders about Ulduar. The war made strange demands, and this one paid off.

“Using the images you’ve captured, I’ve created everything you need for your overseer disguise kit. You’ll make a fine iron dwarf, if I do say so myself. Take the kit with you to Dun Argol, use it to disguise yourself, then go to the easternmost building on the broad middle tier of the city. There, you should see a pedestal where the thane and overseers receive their orders from this Loken.

Activate it while disguised and learn all you can from the communication.”

-Mountaineer Kilian

The disguise remains active even after bombing the power core or engaging in some non-damaging activities.

Walkthrough

Quest Giver: Mountaineer Kilian — Prospector’s Point, Grizzly Hills [77, 49]

Objective: Use the Overseer Disguise Kit to disguise yourself as an Iron Rune Overseer, travel to the easternmost building on Dun Argol’s middle tier [81, 60], activate Loken’s Pedestal to receive his message, and return to Mountaineer Kilian.

Quick Facts

Walkthrough

  • Use the Overseer Disguise Kit from your inventory before entering Dun Argol. The disguise makes you friendly with every enemy in Dun Argol, including iron dwarves and elementals. You can walk through the entire fortress without pulling anything.
  • Head to the easternmost building on the broad middle tier of Dun Argol at [81, 60]. Inside, look for a pedestal in the center of the room. The pedestal does not sparkle. You need to click directly on it to activate it.
  • When you activate the pedestal while disguised, an Image of Loken appears and delivers a message. Stand still and listen to the full speech. Once it finishes, you receive quest credit.

Loken’s Message:

  • Loken scolds the “overseer” for being late and demands increased war golem production before the stone giant leader reaches Ulduar.
  • He orders the rune-smiths to continue converting stone giants and to destroy those who resist.
  • He warns that if the stone giants interfere with Ulduar operations, the overseer and the thane will be held responsible, and that mortals must not be allowed to aid the giants.
  • He dismisses the overseer, stressing the urgency of the tasks.

Disguise Mechanics

  • Mount first, then disguise. Mounting while disguised cancels the disguise (and aggros every nearby mob). However, applying the disguise while already mounted works perfectly, letting you ride through Dun Argol at mount speed while disguised.
  • Taking damage removes the disguise. This includes fall damage, so be careful on terrain edges.
  • The disguise only functions within the Dun Argol subzone. It cannot be used elsewhere.
  • Nitro Boosts warning: Using engineering Nitro Boosts while disguised launches you into the air, and the landing fall damage kills you. Do not use Nitro Boosts while disguised.

Tip: Do NOT Turn In This Quest Immediately

  • The Overseer Disguise Kit remains usable as long as this quest is in your quest log. Once you turn it in, you lose the kit. Since the disguise trivializes every other Dun Argol quest by letting you bypass all enemies, complete The Iron Thane and His Anvil and Blackout BEFORE turning this quest in.

Efficiency Tips

  • Optimal order: Complete this quest first (Loken’s Pedestal at [81, 60]), then keep the disguise active and proceed to the main building at [76, 63] for Blackout and The Iron Thane and His Anvil. Only turn in all three quests together after everything is done.
  • After completing The Iron Thane fight, you can re-apply the disguise (or use the Golem Control Unit to look like an iron dwarf) for a safe walk out.

Lore Context

This is the payoff of the entire Overseer Disguise chain and one of the most lore-significant quests in the Dun Argol storyline.

The player’s infiltration reveals Loken’s direct involvement in commanding the iron dwarf military buildup, his plans to seize Ulduar, and his ongoing war against the stone giants. Kilian’s reaction in the completion text reflects the Explorers’ League’s horror at the implications: the titans’ own creations, stone and iron, are fighting each other for control of Ulduar, and this conflict could destroy the dwarves’ only chance to learn the true history of dwarvenkind.

This discovery connects directly to the overarching WotLK narrative, foreshadowing the Ulduar raid and Loken’s role as the corrupted Keeper pulling strings across Northrend.

Cross-Expansion Connection

  • Loken appears here as a holographic projection commanding iron dwarf operations, the same way he issues orders across multiple Northrend locations. Players eventually confront Loken directly as the final boss of the Halls of Lightning dungeon in Storm Peaks. His death there triggers the Algalon Protocol, which leads to one of WoW’s most memorable storylines: the Ulduar raid and the revelation that the titans considered “re-originating” Azeroth (wiping all life) as a failsafe.

Kilian presented the disguise kit with visible pride. “You’ll make a fine iron dwarf, if I do say so myself. Take it to Dun Argol and go to the easternmost building on the middle tier. There’s a pedestal where the overseers receive orders from Loken. Activate it while disguised and learn what you can.”

A night elf warrior, dressed as an iron dwarf, eavesdropping on titan secrets. The war made strange demands.

The disguise worked better than expected. Iron dwarves passed without a second glance as I navigated to the communication pedestal. When I activated it, a projection materialized.

Loken himself.

“You’re late, overseer.” When Loken spoke, the pedestal’s runes brightened. “Destiny will not wait. Your craftsmen must increase their production of war golems before the stone giant leader and his army reach Ulduar.” He wasn’t finished. “Tell your rune-smiths to continue converting what stone giants you can. Those that will not submit must be destroyed.”

Converting. Not killing. The iron dwarves were remaking the stone giants.

“If the stone giants interfere with our work at Ulduar, I will hold you and your thane responsible. Mortals must not be allowed to come to the aid of the giants.”

Mortals. He knew we were here.

“Return to your duties, overseer. Be certain to impress upon your workers the urgency of their tasks.”

The projection faded. I had heard enough.

Kilian listened to my report with growing alarm. “The titans’ stone and iron sons fighting each other for control of the ancient city of Ulduar. This is madness, and it could destroy our only chance to learn the true history of dwarvenkind!”

Ulduar. The name Brann’s prophecies had mentioned. The same place the runic plates spoke of. Whatever Loken was planning, it centered there.

Loken’s voice held authority, and Ulduar kept surfacing like something that refused to stay buried. But Ruuna the Blind has been waiting near Vordrassil Pass, and her visions need tending in Ruuna’s Request.
